Did I find a jigdo problem

I have fedora x64 installed, and a November 2rd dvd for I386 platform. I did the followingL a) Put the i386 DVD in the cd reader. It is the only file situated within /media I copied and pasted the jigdo line from the cookbook site. Jigdo told me that it needed to replace 400 files in order to create the target ISO. I selected the correct file to build, and 4 hours later, it was still executing. Somehow, I believe that Jigdo decided that it should perhaps build an everything version. Four hours and no indication how many additional files were required to complete. I have decided that since after 4 hrs of high speed (700kb/sec) download speed with no indication of what was left to do I cancelled Jigdo. I did not know of any restart capability with jigdo. It reqiires it. Since individuals reported success with 86_64 version (65 bit), that I would consider a jigdo exercise for that version. I truly want to have proof that jigdo saves download megabytes.

FC8 (32-bit) screen dimming

On upgrading from FC6 to FC8 on my laptop, the screen dims almost immediately at the beginning of the boot up sequence. The screen is bright for any length of time until the messages shows that the kernel is booting. Then the screen dims so that text and graphics are barely discernible. This is true in text as well as graphics modes (runlevels 3 and 5). Does anyone know what setup file may be causing this? Phillip Thomas

Grub feature request?

Is it possible to have the Grub gui (when it comes up) to "remember" the last boot item chosen instead of simply choosing the default? I wonder if this would be a neat feature? OCR ...is anyone having luck with this?

I'm dinking with gocr and kooka. I'm not having much luck or fun with it. Has anyone been able to successfully do OCR?? If so, with what tools and settings. I'm receiving a pile of printed documents from our Non-Profit that need to be made into computer files. I'm sure not wanting to have to type it all in. Thanks for any and all advice. recording calls with qarecord and scim

F8, portmap, 111, and NFS failure

I recently installed a new F8 system, similar to what I had done previously. The firewall is preventing the export of file systems from this system. I have NFS trusted, but the problem appears to be with port 111. If I attempt to mount the F8 system files (with firewall enabled) on system "B" I receive: mount -v /dfpc74 mount: Unable to connect to 192.168.7.4:111, errno 113 (No route to host) mount: trying 192.168.7.4 prog 100003 vers 3 prot tcp port 47097 mount: Unable to connect to 192.168.7.4:47097, errno 113 (No route to host) Exit 32 With the firewall disabled the mount is successful. mount -v /dfpc74 mount: trying 192.168.7.4 prog 100003 vers 3 prot tcp port 2049 mount: trying 192.168.7.4 prog 100005 vers 3 prot udp port 32771 What am I missing in my setup. I work from the command line, so please reply in a way that is not GUI dependent. Thanks don

RocketRAID 1740 driver for Fedora 7

Hello Everyone, I have a rocketraid 1740 controller that I want to use in a soon to be installed Fedora 7 system. Highpoint's website doesn't have any Fedora 7 drivers, but they do provide a package that will let end users build the rr1740x module for any 2.4 or 2.6 series kernel. How would one build the rr1740x module for Fedora 7 if one doesn't have a Fedora 7 system to build the driver on? Can I install the kernel-devel package from Fedora 7 on a Fedora 6 host, and build the module that way? Should I use a Fedora 7 virtual machine (e.g. vmware, xen, etc.)? Audacious always forgets all settings (V. 1.3.2-1.fc7)

My audacious behaves very strange lately. (Yes I did just fine some days ago). Every time I start it, all setting I have made since last audacious run are lost. Skins, output device, visual setting like double size and visible play list, everything... The only thing that remains is the playlist, which seems to be saved correctly. I can change everything, audacious play any song I want it to play, to any device I like. I can skin it and so on... Then I quit audacious and the vicious circle begins again. I already tried deleting ~/.config/audacious and ~/.local/share/audacious but it did not help. With -N a. gives me this message: ** Message: device: default ** (audacious:9521): CRITICAL **: playlistwin_update_list: assertion `playlistwin_list' failed I have searched the web for it, but nothing that seems related showed up. Has anybody experienced simmilar behaviour? Or does your audacious in the given version work properly? Any suggestions how to trace down this bug? -- bye, Adalbert We've run out of licenses

Java Solution

Here is what Fedora leaders need to do to end the java problems on Fedora. Here are things that need to happen. 1. Contact Sun Inc. and make sure they continue to package the free package: "jre-6u3-linux-i586-rpm.bin" and any new improvements in the future. We need to have Fedora docs that explain how to unpack this odd file. It might be part of the install instructions. Alternate is to talk Sun Inc. into changing their web page so that people getting the free software must say yes to their legal stuff. Then it becomes a plain rpm file installed easy. 2. Next the small wimpy java 1.51 which is of no use to a serious java user should not be made available to the user.Instead there should be dummy /usr/java/default/bin/java file which will print out "Java not installed" if you press java in a Terminal. There needs to be a link between /etc/alternatives/java to /usr/java/default/bin/java. 3. There is already a link from /etc/alternatives/java to /usr/bin/java. 4.
