yum updates corrupting rpmdb

This is the second update in as many days that has resulted in a corrupted rpm database for me. I was able to fix yesterday's with a --rebuilddb and 'yum clean all' but before I go through that little exercise again, is anyone else seeing problems? Any suggestions how to debug this? # yum update ( lists a dozen or so packages to update, including firefox... ...I say 'y'... ...10 minutes later the terminal history is filled with: rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery and yum won't die except by 'kill -9' # rpm -qa rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery error: db4 error(-30977) from dbenv->open: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - (-30977) error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm Not out of space... # df /var/lib/rpm Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb7 497829 205804 266323 44% /var and there are no kernel disk error messages. Is there some "run recovery" that's different than --rebuilddb? <Joe

My /var/log/ directory contents dissapeared!

Hi. Using Fedora Core 2, I've just noticed that my /var/log/ directory contents dissapeared. If I type 'last' I get this message: ------- last: /var/log/wtmp: No such file or directory Perhaps this file was removed by the operator to prevent logging last info. -------- and I've got these contents when 'll' at '/var/log': ------ total 252 -rw-r----- 1 mysql mysql 240568 Jan 4 09:48 mysqld.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13758 Jan 4 04:02 rpmpkgs drwx------ 2 root root 1024 Dec 18 2004 samba ------ This server is exposed to Internet, and '/var/log' directory contained lot of files some days ago :( Any suggestion? lite-scribe question.

My LITE-ON drive does both sides of the disk. Bugs in desktop effects

Monitor a filesystem?

is it possible to monitor a file system to see what files have been open (and closed), and if so, how? The device in this case would be a USB CD-rom drive and the filesystem would be the disk in it. TIA, Jeff

Java problem

Hi I installed the jre from the file jre-6u3-linux-i586-rpm.bin and it give me done with no prob , but there is no java file in /usr/bin/ , can any one suggest some thing about that ? Br

Will not boot after Disk upgrade from hda to sda

Hi All, I am normally quite good with grub but currently I am struggling with a disk upgrade on my brothers PC. He has purchased a pci sata card, and added a new 1TB drive. I have used dd to copy the boot sector to the new drive, then used clonezilla and copied hda1 (/boot) to sda1, and copied hda3 (/) to sda3. hda2 is swap and has been recreate as sda2. I edited the /boot/grub/menu.lst from title Fedora (2.6.23.1-42.fc8) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.23.1-42.fc8 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.23.1-42.fc8.img to title Fedora (2.6.23.1-42.fc8) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.23.1-42.fc8 ro root=/dev/sda3 rhgb quiet initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.23.1-42.fc8.img I change the device.map from (hd0) /dev/hda to (hd0) /dev/sda and edited fstab from LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1 to /dev/sda3 / ext3 defaults 1 1 I have checked with e2label that all partitions are correctly named as well. Is there something else I have missed?

Openvpn Fedora tutorial?

Is there a good tutorial for openvpn under Fedora? I've followed the instructions at <http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=595436> but they seem to have made things worse rather than better. Route to 169.254.0.0 - needed ?

Hello, Looking at the routes after an install of Fedora Core 6 isee that there's a route to 169.254.0.0 that's defined (some info removed from table): 192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U eth0 169.254.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U eth0 default myhost.site 0.0.0.0 UG eth0 There's a router/gateway at 192.168.1.1 that is used for the internet. I don't see the purpose of the 169.254.0.0 route. Anyone know why it is defined and for what purposes ? Thanks, Al

Running remote GNOME session

I have a shiny new Fedora 8 system with GNOME. When I log in locally, everything is nice. Now I am trying to login from my Windows XP desktop, where I have PUTTY (ssh) and MicroImages X server installed. I can login with ssh, and set the DISPLAY variable. xclock comes up just fine on my X server. But when I type "gnome-session" into my ssh-provided bash session, a red rectangle flashes for an instant on my X display, then I get this message on the bash session: Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gnome-session' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'. (Details: serial 296 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
