Uninstall
by mike
Is there a way to just flat uninstall FC 8. I need to make a
workstation match a customer configuration.
They use Ubuntu, which has the worst Installation program I have ever
seen. Thus I need to uninstall FC 8 to create open space. Partion
Magic from the XP partition craps the basket and claims it cannot even
find the drive letter.
I really would hate to buy a new machine just to match the customer
configuration.
Any help is appreciated.

Libraries disappearing from compat-libstdc++-296
by William M. Quarles
Hey all,
I'm using Fedora 8 on my laptop. The library known as
"libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2" isn't there, which I need to run Maple 7 on
my computer. This should be a part of the compat-libstdc++-296 RPM, as
this library was originally a part of RHL 7.3 and 8.0 in libstdc++, and
available in the compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118 RPM for RHL 9. Does
anybody know why this file was removed from the compat-libstdc++-296
RPM, and what I can do to get it from the SRPM again? (I'm guessing
theoretcially it should still be part of the source code.)
Thanks
William

Turbo Memory
by Claude Jones
I was spec'ing a new laptop tonight, and noticed it had 1 GB of 'Turbo
Memory' -- this is a new Intel specification that uses flash memory to cache
frequently used items and is only available in Windows-land with Vista. It is
not CPU cache nor RAM.
Does anyone know of any work being done to access this new technology in
Linux?

CUPS, Alpine, and printserving
by Beartooth
I've been advised, more or less btw in an otherwise scarcely
related thread, to quit using my KVM switch (which has spare USB ports
touted by the maker especially for printserving) as a printserver.
So I plugged the printer (an HP psc 1315v) into my #1 machine;
and I've been telling Firefox 127.0.0.1:631 on each of the machines, and
trying to get it to work.
I thought I had it; and when I print at all, it's most often from
Alpine 2.0. So I've been trying to print one Alpine message from each
machine.
One at least told me the printer seemed not to be connected. The
others have adamantly done nothing.
Since all I know of printing would go in a gnat's eye, and Alpine
has several printing options (none of which I understand well), my first
thought is to try to find out if I have a pure Alpine problem, a pure
CUPS problem, or something else. Can anybody tell??

Weird colour problem with Real Video and Skype
by mike cloaked
I have a Dell Inspiron 530S desktop with an Nvidia graphics card.
The hardware is at
http://www.smolts.org/show?UUID=pub_f3670c10-289f-4e85-804b-60babb27fb23
The machine runs F8 fully up to date and has kmod-nvidia installed.
The desktop is KDE3.5
Almost everything runs well and without any problems - but for a long
time there has been a really awful colour problem when running Real video
and Skype.
Two examples of the problem are on the screenshots at:
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=mhvk1t&s=4
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=20ggy84&s=4
These were obtained by going to the test page at
http://service.real.com/test/
and running the videos - it does not seem to make any difference installing
a different version of Realplayer.
I have the same setup on a different machine with different hardware and
not running kmod-nvidia and there is no problem with colour with the same
tests.
Flash video on web pages is fine and I am not aware of other colour issues but
I have been unable to fathom out how to fix this problem.
Does anyone have any hints as to what I may do, or a workaround, or
suggestion as to where I might look to fix this?

OT: find command permissions: how to exclude dir?
by Dave Burns
I have a cron job that runs 'find /' as root, keeps blowing up when
encountering ~/.gvfs in my home dir. Permissions are set like so:
ls -la ~/.gvfs
total 4
dr-x------ 2 tburns isys 0 2008-10-13 07:43 .
drwxr-xr-x 73 tburns root 4096 2008-10-24 11:49 ..
As owner of dir, no problem:
find /users/tburns ! -name .gvfs |grep gvfs
As root, boom:
sudo find /users/tburns ! -name .gvfs |grep gvfs
[sudo] password for tburns:
find: /users/tburns/.gvfs: Permission denied
When I create another similar directory, same permissions, root has no
problem with it. But note ***the copy has a different file size
(original size=0, copy size=4096)***:
[tburns@cod ~]$ cp -pr .gvfs .gvfscopy
[tburns@cod ~]$ ls -la .gvfscopy
total 8
dr-x------ 2 tburns isys 4096 2008-10-13 07:43 .
drwxr-xr-x 76 tburns root 4096 2008-10-29 10:56 ..
[tburns@cod ~]$ sudo find /users/tburns/.gvfscopy
/users/tburns/.gvfscopy
.gvfs is using some secret sauce that I don't understand to prevent
root from accessing it. Is there some ACL stuff going on here?
(getfacl results are boring.) File locking? (lsof says it is not
open.) Corruption? How can it be that root is denied? I wonder what
would happen if I deleted .gvfs and recreated it manually with
identical permissions?
I tried googling gvfs and permissions, got many many irrelevant hits.
Some hits described a similar problem, but always veer off to a
workaround for their specific situation, no general solution. Please
at least give me a hint what to do or what to google for.
My brain hurts!
