Problems found in /var/log/messages: gdm related.
by Dan Thurman
Hum... I cannot figure out how to fix this particular issue.
I have tried to look for information in forums and mailers
but have not found any solutions to this. Can you take a
look at the following and perhaps you might already know
of a solution?
/var/log/messages:
==============================================
Oct 30 16:42:26 bronze gdm-simple-greeter[15590]: WARNING: gconf key
'/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/recent-languages' is unset
Oct 30 16:42:26 bronze gconfd (gdm-15650): Error setting value for
`/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/recent-languages': Unable to store a value at
key '/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/recent-languages', as the configuration
server has no writable databases. There are some common causes of this
problem: 1) your configuration path file /etc/gconf/2/path doesn't
contain any databases or wasn't found 2) somehow we mistakenly created
two gconfd processes 3) your operating system is misconfigured so NFS
file locking doesn't work in your home directory or 4) your NFS client
machine crashed and didn't properly notify the server on reboot that
file locks should be dropped. If you have two gconfd processes (or had
two at the time the second was launched), logging out, killing all
copies of gconfd, and logging back in may help. If you have stale locks,
remove ~/.gconf*/*lock. Perhaps the problem is that you attempted to use
GConf from two machines at once, and ORBit still has its default
configuration that prevents remote CORBA connections - put
"ORBIIOPIPv4=1" in /etc/orbitrc. As always, check the user.* syslog for
details on problems gconfd encountered. There can only be one gconfd per
home directory, and it must own a lockfile in ~/.gconfd and also
lockfiles in individual storage locations such as ~/.gconf

==============================================
1) Not sure how to set the gconf key and path
/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/recent-languages
and /apps does not exist.
2) Seems that gconf path file is there:
# cd /etc/gconf/2
# ls
evoldap.conf local-defaults.path local-mandatory.path path
3) gconfd was not doubly started, AFAIK - checked pgrep gconfd
and only one processID exist.
4) There are no locks located in ~/.gconf*/*locks
I have removed and reinstalled gdm but that did not help.
Not sure what to do at this point...
Thanks!

Firefox Font Rendering
by David Hláčik
Hello guys,
how come Firefox does not change font-size when changing DPI in Gnome Settings?
Does it accept system DPI settings or it uses own?
I have checked about:config for dpi , there is -1 value . setting to 0
or 109 does nothing , but what is surprising 300 px does ...
Thanks for explanation,
D.

Ubuntu Ibex offers choice of KDE4.1.2 or KDE3.5.10... and kernel-2.6.27.
by linux guy
Subject says it all. Fedora developers tell us that they can't give us
a choice of KDE version and yet Ubuntu is doing it.
Ironically, Fedora says their distribution is more cutting edge and yet
Ibex gets kernel 2.6.27 and we are still stuck with 2.6.26.
I think the KDE-3.5.10 decision demonstrates that Ubuntu developers are
more sensitive to user end needs.
I know a bunch of people are going to chime in and say "Fedora isn't for
you" and "Its a bleeding edge distribution", etc. I think those are
just excuses for a developer community that wants to do it own thing
irregardless of what users actually want.
Don't shoot me, I'm just the squeaky wheel/messenger.

F10 on eeepc 901
by Fred Smith
Hi all!
I've been playing with the latest F10 beta (live CD) on my eeepc 901.
Most things seem to be working well: it finds the correct screen resolution
(which is 1024x600, definitely not one of the common settings before the
mini laptop craze began, and many live CDs don't set it right); it finds
the wired network without trouble and automatically starts it once the
cable is plugged in (I assume Network Manger is doing that for me).
Wireless isn't working because, I assume, it doesn't have a ralink
rt2860sta driver. I know I could compile my own, and there have been
reports of people using ndiswrapper. But it'd be nice if the Fedora gang
could squeeze it into an upcoming release.
Haven't yet played with audio, webcam, microphone, so don't know their
status.
But overall it seems to run pretty well! My thanks for the entire Fedora
team for this release,... it looks like it's gonna be good!

Wish To Know The Basics of Installing/Downloading a Fedora Operating System
by Ubique Enterprises
*Wish To Know The Basics of Installing/Downloading a Fedora Operating System
*
Hello,
I have the following request:
Background
- I have an Internet connection on a Dell Server (Home based and being used
as a stand alone machine or a 32 bit machine) having a Windows 2003
Operating System installed.
Dell Server does not have a very reliable CD/DVD burner. It can read only.
Do not know much about it.
Want to do the following
a) Download a Fedora Operating System on a folder in the hard disk. And
transfer it out of this computer to another stand alone machine which
currently has only a 256 MB RAM with the help of a pen drive/pen drive
having a 1 gb capacity. Wish to install using the pen drive after wiping out
the earlier Windows Operating Systems - Win XP installed on it.
Possible?
How?
Step- By -Step please.
Thanks.

F9: Manually editing passwd/group files causes rebooting to freeze up after udev....
by Dan Thurman
I was manually changing the /etc/passwd and /etc/group
file since my users were incorrectly assigned UID/GIDs,
I manually corrected the UID/GID in /home for each user,
rebooted and noticed that I would get a hang just after
udev.
I tried ^D and noticed that something complaining
about /var/run/anacron was not removable and that
user anacron did not exist, and the system would then
shutdown and reboot.
On rebooting, I stopped grub and added -s and single
user boot was successful.
In single user, I checked what I could and finding nothing,
and proceeded with ^D and noticed several things:
1) There was a message to the effect that several important
users (root, anacron, and others) was not able to be retrieved
from dbus's database. The message appears too fast for me
to write it all down exactly.
2) Repeated messages of: "Unknown username "root" in message
bus configuration file, for each important users.
Is there some way to repair the dbus database?
Thanks!

Remote Rescue - PXE, SSH, and a remote console?
by Ryan Wilson
Hi,
I've got a Linux server at my parent's house. It had some hardware troubles
and I shipped them a new computer and asked them to move the hard drive
over. That worked out great, except now Fedora 8 won't boot. I think I know
why (I think I need to rebuild my initrd), but how can I do that from
remote? Unfortunately, due to time zone issues, I can't talk with my parents
directly, just via e-mail. This has led to some really slow reboot cycles...
They put in a live cd, configure the box for remote login and e-mail me.
Later (maybe the next day), I login make a change and reboot. The system
doesn't come back up so I have to e-mail them to tell me the error and have
them put in the live cd again. This has repeated several times. One reboot
takes days! It's getting very painful to try and recover this computer! So,
I want to improve my ability to debug problems in the future... Any
suggestions on better ways to debug a remote server?
Is there a way to redirect the Linux console over the network like you can
to a serial port? My google searches keep leading me to "ethercons" for
FreeBSD which claims it is based on a Linux driver that I can't find any
information about. Is there something else that I haven't found? This would
help with interacting with the console to read error messages.
Is there a way to have the kernel reboot the system automatically if it
can't mount the root filesystem? I'm not 100% sure where the system is
hanging, but I think nash gives up when it can't find the filesystem and
just hangs. Can I specify that the kernel reboot on panic on the command
line? My setting in /etc/sysctl.conf doesn't get run because the root
filesystem isn't mounted yet!
Is there something I can use to trigger remote reboots? Like a wake-on-lan
packet that reboots the system when hung?
Is there a linux distro (preferably Fedora or one of its variants) that I
can boot a rescue session from using PXE? I'd like to build a setup with
grub, pxelinux, etc... (if possible) where it boots into the main OS and on
reboot, it will switch back-and-forth to a rescue distro. I just bought a
Linksys WRT54GL (only $50 on amazon!) and I plan on using openvpn to setup a
tunnel between this server and me and use the DHCP/TFTP server to serve up
PXE. Maybe with PXE I could serve one config for booting the real hard drive
and then another config when I want the rescue CD. This rescue distro would
need to bring up an ssh server with a password preset or a public key so I
could login remotely (if there is no way to redirect the console to the
network). I've considered, if no other solution is available, about rolling
a cusom Fedora spin with all the tools and configuration I need for this.
Thanks,
Ryan

Changing the size of a xterm
by Aaron Konstam
I remember there was a way to change the size of an xterm but I can't
remember what it is. What I want is the same thing ctrl-+ does with
gnome-terminal.
Any help out there?

change timezone?
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
I've one host that insists it is living in PST, the rest of my hosts
know that it is still PDT.
I'm guessing there's a flag somewhere that says "Adjust for Daylight
Savings Time"?
Even after I've correctly set the time and fired up ntpd the time
eventually (un)corrects itself back to PST.
At a loss here; any takers?
