GRUB menu video mode
by Herbert Carl Meyer
I am using a flat screen TV for a monitor that is VERY picky about video
modes. I have bulled through installation with various hacks, and have X
working, but now I cannot sync to the GRUB menu screen to make boot
choices.
I am looking for info on how to set video mode that GRUB uses for the
menu, either as a menu option or compiled in.

F9 tcl update
by Kevin Cummings
Has anyone else seen this? On an X86_64 system, yum found a tcl update
from 1:8.5.1-4.fc9 to 1:8.5.2-1.fc9. And in the process it installed
the 1:8.5.1-4.fc9.i386 rpm to resolve a dependancy on tk.x86_64. On my
next run, it tried to update the .i386 RPM as well, but it failed
because tk requires tcl=8.5.1

How to activate emerald theme on FC9?
by Zlatko
I'm trying to activate some theme in emerald theme manager without
success.
First, I select one of themes, and then I don't have the possibility to
activate it, not even with double-click of the mouse.
I'm using all the latest packages and updates for FC9.
Window manager: Gnome + Compiz Fusion
Thanks,
Zlatko

some 3D weirdness - Intel 915
by Andrea Mastellone
Hi to all,
I have some troubles about 3d rendering. My hardware:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile
915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)
Software:
2.6.25.6-55.fc9.i686 (last kernel on F9).
Packages:
xorg-x11-server-common-1.4.99.902-3.20080612.fc9.i386
mesa-libGLU-7.1-0.35.fc9.i386 (updates-testing)
mesa-libGL-7.1-0.35.fc9.i386 (updates-testing)
------------------------------------------------------
xorg.conf:
# Xorg configuration created by pyxf86config
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"

InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

With this configuration, Compiz is fine. Also some programs, as
stellarium, are ok. But different 3D software does not render properly,
in particular
google earth, neither 4.2 or 4.3 version (4.2 was fine in F8, even if
there were some glitches)
celestia, displays images only when "static": if I move viewpoints by
dragging mouse, there is nothing displayed.
I have googled, but I did not find something helpful. Even if I activate
the options in xorg.conf
# Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
# Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
# Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"
there is no improvement.
Some hints ? Thanks,
Andrea

Re: Upgrade from Fedora 7 to 9, no GUI
by JUSTIN TAYLOR
I tried renaming /etc/inittab.rpmnew to /etc/inittab but that did not work.
The last three lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log are:
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found

Just update the xserver in F9 and now firefox scrolling with the mouse
seems a lot slower. I think other things like window dragging seems slow
too.

intel3945 WLAN and Siemens ADSL Modem
by das
Hello Friends
I have one 'Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
(rev 02)' card (quoted from `lspci`) in my Lenovo laptop. And my
Siemens ADSL modem has a Wireless network facility. But, though I set
the network up according to the modem manual, I am not being able to
get the wlan0 up.
'service network start' is giving me a message like this:
<<
Bringing up interface wlan0: Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
Determining IP information for wlan0...SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
failed.
>>
And 'dmesg' is telling:
<<
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:03:00.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
iwl3945: Radio disabled by HW RF Kill switch
>>
My question is, is some problem there in the wlan driver or I am
making some stupid mistake in setting up the wireless? See, I am
absolutely ignorant about both wireless and network, and so, please
make your reply as less cryptic as possible.

Capital letters in (windows) file names on Fedora 9
by Peter Langfelder
Hi,
I just installed F9 on my desktop machine and am running into a
problem when trying to transfer files from a windows system. Here's a
bit of background: I used to switch back and forth between a linux
(FC6) laptop and a windows desktop, transferring my work files back
and forth using a USB stick and rsync. All capital letters are
properly recognized in F6, so when I create a file Temp.R on Windows,
it shows as Temp.R on my FC6 laptop. In F9, however, some filenames
are being converted to lowercase (I suspect those that were created on
Windows..); for example, the file may show up as temp.r. The converted
file names are being displayed both in
File Browser windows as well as in terminal (such as seen by ls or rsync).
Is there any way to make the system recognize the case the way FC6
did? Is this some setting in the automatic recognition and mounting of
file systems? A proper file name recognition from Windows is very
important... I'd hate to have to downgrade the system so I get this
functionality back.
Thanks and best regards,
Peter
