install woes

first I downloaded the Fedora Core 9 64 DVD iso, took many hours, but on attempting to install, it freezes up at the test media screen. I then downloaded all the FC9 64 CD isos, tried the first one and it freezes up at the test media screen. I tried submitting a report on the University of Kent form, but that failed! I then tried the FC9 64 net install CD and it freezes up on the choose language screen. The PC is an AMD Sempron 64 tower, from probably 2006. I thought maybe there are bugs in the early AMD64 CPUs. so I tried the FC9 32 net install iso, freezes up on the "Choose a language" screen. That suggests it isnt a 64 bit bug. I tried Ubuntu 64, 8.04.1 that freezes up once the desktop appears. when I say freeze up I mean no response to keyboard (or mouse for Ubuntu). I installed FC3 some years ago without problem, and I use FC3 and Windows XP all the time without problem. I decided to look at FC8 instead, unfortunately there dont appear to be CD's, I dont want to spend 5 hours downloading the DVD and find the same freeze up problem.

Plus I like running the Mozilla original Firefox instead of the Fedora rolled Firefox, at least I feel I have a little more control of the settings and what not. I also don't mind doing some manual dependency hunting, it reminds me of the old days...[as sadistic as that sounds]. heh...$DEITY...that never gets old. :^) -Ubence

I have used it sparingly. I prefer to use kedit or gedit as they are easier to work with. PAE kernel and 4GB of memory

I am looking for a definitive answer to the question of where the PAE kernels become useful. I have seen various articles that mention needing PAE kernels if you have more then 4GB of physical memory in a 32-bit processor environment. I have also seen statements that say you need them if you have 4GB or more of memory. Now which is right? Also, even if you need a PAE kernel because the last few bytes are not addressable when you have exactly 4GB is this useful or is the trade off of larger page tables and pages going to eat any benefit of being able to address these few bytes and if so when does the PAE kernel become useful? Where to get 64-bit Fedora 9 DVD

I installed Fedora 9 from the DVD that came with the book _Fedora 9 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux_. Fedora 9 works GREAT! But the version on the DVD that comes with the book is 32-bit and I prefer running with 64-bit. Where can I get a 64-bit Fedora 9 DVD? Thanks.
