External eSATA drive downgraded to 1.5Gbs

I've noticed that an external eSATA drive I use for backups gets downgraded to 1.5Gbs, with errors when I boot. + I'm running Fedora 11 (64bit ). + The eSATA port is from a JMicron JMB361, which is also used for two PATA DVD drives - if that makes any difference. + The drive is an Icy Box - Ib-390stus-b enclosure. + In the BIOS, I've select AHCI. + I've tried booting with noapic acpi=off + The drive seems to work fine at 1.5GBps, but I'd rather have the full speed its capable off. Any ideas on the meaning of the errors ... Updating Fedora 11 to FC12 beta!

Hi All, Can I update my current FC11 to FC12 without having to wipe the disk and install from scratch again?. I would just like to be able to download the necessary kernels and files and upgrade rather than having to reinstall completely. Many thanks for your help, Paul.

Qemu vs VMWare

Hi everyone! :-) I wish to share my first hands-on experience with qemu, compare it to vmware player, and (since I'm highly disappointed with the performance difference) ask is there anything that can be done configuration-wise to improve the user experience under qemu. Basically, my motivation to try out qemu in the first place is the not-so-great support from vmware when it comes to kernel modules, updating Fedora etc. The idea is to make all these issues go away by going with the open source solution for virtualization. Naively, I expected more or less equivalent performance and/or set of features. But qemu turned out to be a very big disappointment: (1) Windows XP guest under qemu appears to be an order-of-magnitude slower than equivalent vmware guest. I haven't measured precisely, but by counting the seconds for the same operation (open a window or such), qemu appears to be roughly 10 times slower! Why is it *that* bad? (2) When resizing the guest console window, qemu rescales the guest output, while vmware resizes guest screen resolution to match the window size. The latter looks far more pretty. (3) There is no transparent clipboard usability (copy-paste) between host and guest in qemu. (4) Set of supported hardware for guest is smaller in qemu (no bluetooth, no webcam, ...). (5) There is no equivalent of the "unity" display of guest windows on the host desktops, which works so beautifully in vmware, even more so if Compiz effects are enabled on the host. There are a few more minor quirks (selinux complaints, failure to shutdown guest properly, etc.), but I can live with those, so I won't complain. But the above five issues, (1) and (3) being most severe, are showstoppers. So my questions are: * did I miss something obvious to configure, read the docs or whatever, so I'm not aware that qemu can work better? * I am used to think that typically open-source solution of something is more powerful than any proprietary solution of the same thing, but in this case (virtualization) it seems to be the other way around. Why? I doubt that open- source developers are incompetent to deliver equivalent functionality, so what is the problem here? Patented solutions, maybe? I mean, host-guest copy/paste is an obvious useful thing to have, for example... I am not trying to bitch about qemu being so bad, but am rather genuinely interested in understanding why. Also, I think I should mention that my processor does not have the vmx bit, I have no option in the host bios to enable it, so I guess both qemu and vmware work in all-software emulation. But that doesn't explain such a big difference in performance. Btw, this is all on Intel Core 2 Duo 1.5 GHz, 2GB of ram, each guest has one processor and 512 MB ram allocated. They don't run simultaneously, of course. I didn't notice any memory swapping activity. I would appreciate if someone sheds some light for me on this. I would prefer to use qemu (it being open-source), but it performs so much worse that I have to fallback to vmware for now. Ideas? Opinions? Advice? TIA, :-) Marko

how to clamav and nautilus extension ?

deduce amixer commands?

I can go into the alsamixer app, and enable spdif output on my soundcard and get mplayer to passthrough pcm encoded dvd tracks and wot-not. Now I want to automate it, but things like "amixer scontents" produces such an immense amount of gibberish, I can't figure out what actually changed (and someone, somewhere is translating the gibberish control names to completely different labels in the alsamixer screens :-). Is there an amixer option I'm not seeing that says "output the amixer commands required to reproduce this state"? I'd like to just add one simple amixer command to my dvd player script.

Less and ANSI colour escape sequences

Hi everyone, I was wondering why `less' in Fedora 11 can't display ANSI colour escape sequences even with the `-r' or `-R' options. I use grep as `grep --color=always'. When I pipe the output to `less -R' or `less -r' all the colours are lost. This works on my Xubuntu machine at the University. Is this a bug with the Fedora package? Thanks for any insights. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. It sets us free.

f11x86_64: ATI driver: load module error

Hi, i have install f11 on my server HP DL380 with Video ATI > [root@ivlug ~]# lspci |grep -i vga > 01:03.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc ES1000 (rev 02) then I have "yum install xorg-x11-drv-catalyst.x86_64" and reboot. when x start the screen is black I go to init 3 and try load driver: > [root@ivlug ~]# modprobe fglrx > FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.30.8-64.fc11.x86_64/extra/catalyst/fglrx.ko): Cannot allocate memory > but driver not load. where I'm wrong ? question on upgrading from FC10 to FC11

Trying to follow instructions at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/YumUpgradeFaq This is a test system, nothing of value on it if the upgrade does not go, but I still want to get this working. For switching the repositories: rpm -Uhv ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/<ReleaseNumber>/Fedora/<Arch>/os/Packages/fedora-release-*.noarch.rpm ReleaseNumber is 11? and Arch i386? I used those values and got something like (copying this from the test system): Retrieving ftp:.... curl: (78) RETR response: 550 error: skipping ftp:.... - transfer failed
