F11 LiveCD installation problem (repost)

Dear all, I have built a livecd from fedora 11, using fedora-livecd-gnome.ks kickstart configuration. but when I installed it to my system to use all my harddisk which has been installed with fedora10, it says that "Could not completely remove VG". Is anyone has the same problem? is that because I had missed including some packages which are responsible to remove volume group? $ uname -a Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.29.6-217.2.8.fc11.i586 #1 SMP Sat Aug 15 00:44:39 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Thanks before. best regards, -andria

Old laptop for a media server ? (F11, mediaTomb, transcoding, uPNP server, etc.)

We have a Dell 5100 laptop sitting here not doing anything. My wife got a new one a year ago. We need a media server to serve large digital images to client computers running digikam and we also want to run mediatomb to act as a server for our laptops and our uPNP capable tv. The 5100 has a Pentium 4 running at 2.66 MHz. Right now it has 256 MB of RAM, but I think I have 1 GB sitting around here for it. Plug in a new 7200 RPM 500 GB hard drive ? Run a 1 TB USB drive for more storage ? I would like to run Fedora 11 on it. (What else ?) Boot init 3 ? Run init level 5 for doing administration ? I am running the F11 Live CD on it right now. It seems to work fairly well, albeit a bit slow. I love the form factor. It would be quiet and small. Its got a monitor and a keyboard and built in battery back up, for a couple hours, anyway. We have a wireless card for it too... I could do administration on the couch instead of in some closet somewhere. Will it do the job ? I'm worried about the transcoding part of things. Our TV doesn't support many video formats but mediaTomb does transcoding so that we can watch just about anything we can store. Will it do the job ? Thanks

Script on shutdown?

1. Is there a way of running a script on shutdown? I'd like to close some windows. 2. Is there a script to end a program (ssh) running in a particular desktop, eg desktop 5? 3. Is there a way of running a program (ssh) on a specified desktop when logging in? Basically, I want to automate the process whereby I open an ssh window to a remote computer in a given desktop. At the moment I do this by going to the desktop and clicking a button in my KDE Favourites, admittedly not very onerous. bash oom problem

hi list, whilst trying to run this bash command for w in {A..Z}{A..Z}{A..Z}{A..Z}{A..Z}{A..Z}{A..Z}{A..Z} ;do echo $w;done > wl1 on my aspire one (which is running rawhide) it kept crashing my system down with no reasons shown in any of the logs, so i tried it on my desktop machine which is an athlonx2 6000 with 2GB of ram and a raid0 array, with 2GB of swap and it too crashed the terminal but it did give me an error and it turned out to be an oom error so i tried upping the swap partition to 10GB and i'm still getting an oom crash, can anyone suggest a way of getting the command to dump the output to disk each time it gets close to running out of memory? or is this command always doomed to fail? tia phil

Router in Fedora. Alternative to Mikrotik

Hello my good friends, recently i have been introduced to a system new to me, Mikrotik Router http://www.mikrotik.com/ I was wandering, is there some alternative to make Fedora work like that? i mean, have to configurate all in graphic mode? The real problem that i am facing is that the my network needs some bandwidth control by IP and those ip have to me given by the dhcp as static by MACADDRESS. and have to be routing between the internet and my internal servers of apache, samba, and mysql. Mojunting CDs

Look people, it is time we speak rationally about the mounting CDs and Playing CDs problem. These problems have appeared on the list for at least 3 months and we have gotten only a few truths out of the question. Somewhere among the developer(s) there is someone who knows how the system decides what too do with a CD and how that doing is controlled. But that person(s) doesn't evidently read the list and has never cleared this up even after several bugzillas. So if anyone know how to get the correct developer to reply pleas share that with us or with the developer(s). But somethings we know and some wrong information is floating around.This is not a Hal problem. It is a udev problem. If anyone on a 586 system who is having a problem with audio (and probably video ) CDs being played butt not producing an icon on the desktop, that problem has been solved. I have posted the solution at least twice on the list but I would be glad to post it again: Note: this has only been tested in GNOME and does not work on 686 systems in bugzilla # 513495 Aram Agajanian poses a solution for the Audio CD problem and it works. First you get udev-141-4.fc11.src.rpm from the link below. http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/packages/udev/141/4.fc11/src/udev-141-4.f… Get the spec file with rpm -i udev-141-4.fc11.src.rpm Remove patch4 from the spec file by commenting it out. Do a rpmbuild -bp then a rpmbuild -bb Install the files created (not the devel files) udev, udev-static libudev0 and libvolume_id Reboot and the Audio CD icon is back. enable verbose shutdown in F11

I like to see my services shutdown, call me old fashioned. Is there a way to enable this behavior with plymouth/Fedora 11? I have verbose start up with the usual method of removing rhgb and quiet from the kernel line in grub.conf. My system periodically hangs on shutdown, and maybe these messages would help to troubleshoot this issue. Thanks.
