Upgrading old RH server

We have an old RH7.3 server that holds all of our user accounts. I'm in the process of upgrading everything to FC10 and looking at /etc/shadow I'm noticing some differences in the way the passwords are encrypted/stored. RH7.3's string looks like this: $1$9cgDnjV/$SLqsoxfwr6tr3o7QkdQ3j1 Whereas FC10 looks like: $6$KS2xrBPJ$jXiz1pE9Lpcb8sSSU0ZHifeN9wBwc.k7GdWO4KIJ3F2JqEw/1mD7bPO6b4jvRXiyXrQn0noWPfs.0h6/tjKbe0 I tried simply copying the old shadow file to a new FC10 server and it seems to work just fine, however I wonder if I'm not breaking something else by doing that. So, what's the proper way to do this? I really don't want to have to reset everyone's password (at least not till they reach their forced expiration.) Thanks. -- A

rpmbuild and getting Missing Dependency

Hi all. I'm trying to build an rpm for lightsquid . I have got the rpm to build without any issues but now when I try and install it, it dies with missing dependencies the files are in the install list. [root@gregory-workstation ~]# rpm -i /home/builder/rpm/RPMS/noarch/lightsquid-1.7-1.noarch.rpm error: Failed dependencies: perl(common.pl) is needed by lightsquid-1.7-1.noarch perl(lightsquid.cfg) is needed by lightsquid-1.7-1.noarch [root@gregory-workstation ~]# I have also used mc to browse the contents on the rpm and the files are in it.. so why do I get this error ? Installing a Texas Instruments CDC Abstract Modem (USB) (Motorola W388 mobile phone) on fedora 10

Hi, When I plug in my phone Motorola W388 . Can i configure fedora 10 to use the modem. The modem works in windows but it requires a device driver PhSerUsb.sys to set it as a serial device and responds to serial queries on COM 03 and it needs another set of drivers to register it as a modem on windows. Drivers are provided by motorola. What makes me hopeful is the bInterfaceClass = Communication and bInterfaceSubClass = Modem (Abstract) on the lsusb -v output. Will I be able to use it on Linux ? what is the origin of NM_CONTROLLED=no

Hello, I have two installations of f10, which are quite new. I looked in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. On one I have: NM_CONTROLLED= On the second NM_CONTROLLED=no AFAIK, when using default installation, it does give you: NM_CONTROLLED= as in the first machine. I wonder: what did I do that caused it to be changed to NM_CONTROLLED=no on the second machine ? I don't remember that I did it manually. Could it be as a result of chkconfig someService off ? Samba and network browsing

Hello, I am using samba-3.0.24-11.fc6 for my workgroup with user security level simple setup and samba works fine; I have two network interfaces eth0(internal LAN) & eth1(external), the problem I face is whenever my internet disconnects and link on eth1 goes down my samba also hangs and windows clients are unable to access samba shares (probably they could not find the samba server), I thought this is due to smbd and nmbd listening on both interfaces eth0 and eth1, so I tried setting following parameters in smb.conf: hosts allow = 192.168.10.0/24 127.0.0.1 local master = yes os level = 65 interfaces = eth0 lo (so that samba will not listen on eth1) bind interfaces only =yes but my problem still continues inspite of above settings, but if I execute "ifdown eth1" (when internet disconnects on eth1) command samba restores its state immediately and now all clients can access the shares normally. What parameters I need to set in order to operate samba normally on interface eth0 only and ignoring the status of eth1? Is this a firewall issue? (I have setup nat; see below my iptables/nat conf) Is this NAT problem? Why samba is not respoding to clients when eth1 goes down? Please help. OpenLDAP, OpenSSL, and Fedora 10 Stop Liking One Another ?

1. System1 - I had 3 test servers running OpenLDAP-2.3.30-3.fc6, OpenSSL-0.9.8b-15.fc6 on Linux-2.6.22.14-72.fc6. And these were perfectly running with OPENSSL configured on 'slapd.conf' as follows: lines cut # # TLSCACertificateFile /etc/CA/cacert.pem TLSCertificateFile /etc/pki/tls/newcert.pem TLSCertificateKeyFile /etc/pki/tls/newkey.pem # # lines cut When I do, #service ldap restart, and #ps -ax I have this slapd -h ldap:/// ldaps:/// -u ldap I can do simple unsecured or secured queries from here. 1. System2 - Now, I upgraded 2 test servers running OpenLDAP-2.4.12-1.fc10, OpenSSL-0.9.8g-12.fc10 on Linux-2.6.29-159.fc10. Suddenly I can't start slapd correctly. The problem is after configuring 'slapd.conf' with OPENSSL, as I did in System1 and I do a #service ldap restart, and #ps -ax I found that I only have this process running: slapd -h ldap:/// -u ldap. The ldaps:/// process did not start suggesting I have incorrect certificates. But I can confirm that my certificates are correct with several tests. I had expected this process: slapd -h ldap:/// ldaps:/// -u ldap. So, when I do TLS secured query like: #ldapwhoami -x -H ldaps://hostname I got this: ldap_sasl_bind(SIMPLE): Can't contact LDAP server (-1) Has anyone had this problem on FC10 ? Notes: 1. I can run this manually: #/usr/sbin/slapd -h ldap:/// ldaps:/// -u ldap and saw slapd -h ldap:/// ldaps:/// -u ldap in my #ps -ax I can do #ldapwhoami -x. But when I do a #ldapwhoami -x -H ldaps://hostname I go error message can't connect to server. 2. I can run this manually: #/usr/sbin/slapd -h ldaps:/// -u ldap I can then test my certificates correctly but SSL does not appear to have been started.

I've got "GCC version 4.3 hared support library, libgcc-4.3.2-7 (i386)". VBox Error: VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED

I removed VBox and reinstalled it but got the same thing. I've installed DKMS and kernel-devel as suggested.
