lilo on serial consoles

I'm trying to prepare to give some Linux tests and got a question that I am confused with, even after digging in to the serial howto and googling. Can somone give it a try? 2 to 4 seem important to me. 1 is the only option that seems not as important but then the alias is needed for ttyS0, right? So what could be the odd one out? Which one of the following is NOT necessary if you want to be able to use a serial connection to select a boot image from lilo, to view kernel and init output, and log in as root? 1. /etc/modules.conf: alias /dev/ttyS0 serial 2. /etc/lilo.conf: serial=0,115200n8 3. /etc/lilo.conf: append="console=ttyS0,115200n8" 4. /etc/securetty: ttyS0 5. /etc/inittab: TO:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 115200 vt100 -- Please don't Cc: me, I'm subscribed to the list.

Install DVD

I have started using Redhat about Redhat 4 and started using Fedora after RedHat 9. I am a little more than a casual user. I develop embedded software and use linux for my development platform but I don't develop linux code. I currently have a fiber internet connection and downloads are normally quick. I went to http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-all and downloaded the direct download for Fedora 10 and burned a DVD with K3B but the DVD would not mount in my system. I went back and downloaded the Bit Torrent and verified the sha1sum and then burned another DVD with K3B and asked K3B to verify the write. All went well until I tried to mount the DVD. I get a popup with the following: Error org.freedesktop.Hal.PermissionDenied. Details Permission denied: Not in active session. I haven't seen this described any where else. Can anyone give me a hand. David Miller

[SEMI-OT] USB flash fails to boot on Intel motherboard

I built a bootable flash F10 using the wiki instructions, but I'm having boot problems. I'm pretty sure it's a bios problem, since it never gets to grub. 1st try was X86-64 and it didn't boot on either of the 2 intel based systems I tried. One system prints "boot error" and the other silently hangs. 2nd try was a 386 version and it booted correctly on my old AMD Athlon box. But on the Intel boxes, same errors. I'm sure there must be a bios setting that is incorrect, but I've tried every bios setting that seems to make sense and it isn't working. If you have an Intel bios and boot from a USB device, could by post your bios settings. Thanks, John

Cannot change 'Message List' fonts in Kmail

Hi All; I'm running KDE 4.2 on Fedora 10 x86_64. Sometime recently it's changed so that changes to the various 'Message List' items per using custom fonts have no affect.... Thoughts ? Thanks in advance

I search .config file in guest. It was not there. I want to run an app as autostart without root permissions. How can I achieve it? Protecting files in linux

Hi, i would like to protect files like passwords and websites of Firefox (iceweasel), and this cannot be done encripting the files. So, i need some program for protect the files and, at the same time be using them. If i encript the files, i cannot use them at the same time. And if I cannot use them at the same time, it's meaningless. Somebody could help me? Thank you very much, I appreciatte your help.

Read error at booting

Dear All, I am trying to boot in my F10 partition, but just before the grub menu appears (and it does not show up), I get the following error: "Read error". I cannot boot anymore. Any ideas? Yesterday, everything was working fine. Thanks in advance, Paul

qGo and sound

Since updating my F10 system today, I no longer get sound out from qGo. If I select the Sound option from it's help menu, it says: "You are not running the Network Audio System" "If you have the 'au' command, run it in the background before this program." "Nevertheless, if you have oss sound should be working and directed to /dev/dsp". Apparently I don't have the au command. Burt everything was working yesterday. -- Colin Adams Preston Lancashire

Hello, I have 2 systems (identical) on 2 different disks: THis is my /etc/grub.conf boot=/dev/sda title Fedora (2.6.23.17-88.fc7) root (hd0,7) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.23.17-88.fc7 ro root=/dev/sda8 rhgb quiet selinux=0 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.23.17-88.fc7.img title Fedora (2.6.23.17-88.fc7 new) root (hd1,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.23.17-88.fc7 ro root=/dev/sdb5 rhgb quiet selinux=0 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.23.17-88.fc7.img I can easily boot on /dev/sda8, but not on /dev/sdb5, However, if I do: root (hd0,7) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.23.17-88.fc7 ro root=/dev/sdb5 rhgb quiet selinux=0 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.23.17-88.fc7.img then I can boot on /dev/sdb5 I try plenty of things but I have not been able to make it works properly. When I try to make a grub-install from /dev/sdb5, I get: Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time. The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly. I check the /boot/grub/device.map (it has both! hd0 and hd1). Still from /dev/sdb5, If I do: grub then: root (hd1,4) I get: Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 find /boot/grub/stage1 gives: (hd0,7) !!!
