F10: KDE and second display not working
by Tarjei Knapstad
I'm running a two-display setup with my laptop (Dell Precision M65) as
screen 0 and a second LCD screen as screen 1 (through the proprietary
nvidia drivers).
This works perfectly fine in gnome. If I log in with KDE I get a
desktop, toolbars etc. on Screen 0, but only the desktop background on
Screen 1 (no icons, no toolbar, no menu when right-clicking). I had
the same problem in F9, where I just gave up and started using Gnome.
Has anyone experienced anything similar/have any tips on how to fix
this? I'd really like to go back to KDE soon :)
This is with a fully updated F10 install in addition to:
kmod-nvidia-177.82-1.fc10.4.i686
kmod-nvidia-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686-177.82-1.fc10.4.i686
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-177.82-1.fc10.i386
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-177.82-1.fc10.i386
Thanks,

Dual monitors KDE 4.2 - no panel, no keyboard focus
by Michael Eager
Hi --
I have dual monitors using Nvidia Twinview. I
have both displays working. The primary display has
the panel, plasmoids, etc. It seems to work OK.
The secondary display only shows wallpaper. Mouse
clicks on the screen are ignored.
I can start a program on the second display by running
a command in the primary display: "DISPLAY=:0.1 konsole"
but this screen does not take keyboard focus. Doing
the same with konqueror, the mouse works, but again
the keyboard is inactive. Neither of these windows has
taskbars at the top, so they cannot be moved.
Running GNOME, the dual display works OK, with both
screens active.

Unable to boot Live Fedora on a USB flash drive
by Stewart Williams
I am trying to create a LiveUSB drive using a 2GB USB flash drive, but
I'm being unsuccessful for some reason.
Ideally I was hoping to create one based on Omega-10, but I get the same
problems with Fedora.
Here's what I have tried:
1. Creating a LiveCD from omega-10-desktop.iso and boot it (which works
fine).
Plug in USB stick, fdisk it as one partition, type 6 (fat 16) then
format it by running 'mkfs.msdos -F 16 -n usbdisk /dev/sdg1'
As root running 'livecd-iso-to-disk /dev/live /dev/sdg1'
Seems to complete without error
2. Boot Fedora 9 install on my desktop and prepare the USB stick as above
Run liveusb-creator GUI and select /dev/sdg1 as target, and
omega-10-desktop.iso as source (Also tried F10-Live-i686.iso as source)
Completes without error
However when I try and boot of the stick either by physically booting
using the BIOS or testing with QEMU I get the following errors:
Running 'qemu -hda /dev/sdg -m 256 -std-vga' or booting using a physical
PC I get a garbled prompt
http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?07644a5805.png
Running 'qemu -hda /dev/sdg1 -m 256 -std-vga' I get an error stating
that it can find the root filesystem

Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?
Many Thanks.

Gimp Gap?
by Dan Thurman
[OFF TOPIC]: Gimp
I was reading Gimp on Gimp's website and
discovered that there was something called
Gap. It was not clear to me if this was
already built in, is a plugin, or a separate
application to be downloaded and installed.
If Gap is already built-in, how does one
invoke it?
Thanks!

qgtkstyle on qt4
by David Hláčik
Hello guys,
I have Fedora 10 x86_64 . I have skype.i386 installed (from skype
webpage) . This requires qt4.i386 which was additionally installed to
my 64bit OS. Skype works fine.
But i have used on Fedora 10 i386 version, qgktstyle which made qt
aplications (skype in my case) to look as my gnome desktop.
I can install qgtkstyle as well but in repository there is only 64bit
version qtkstyle.x86_64. I tought it does not matter as it is only
config think. But it does, and it do not works for qt4.i386 == with my
skype.
How to solve this issue?
Thanks in advance,
David Hlacik

Boot Windows XP from high block number?
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have installed Linux and Windows XP on my hard drive and am trying to
set up a dual boot. Unfortunately XP is installed at a high sector,
namely block 204438565. The partition table starts:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 63 2040254 1020096 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 2040255 104438564 51199155 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 * 104438565 206836874 51199155 b W95 FAT32
...
I have set up grub.conf as follows:
...
title Windows
rootnoverify (hd0,2)
chainloader +1
The grub initialization screen starts OK, but when I select Windows,
grub fails with a disk read error.
Questions:
(1) Is grub.conf set up right for this partition table?
(2) Is it possible to boot XP at this location, or do I have to
reinstall Linux and XP with their partition reversed, so as to get the
XP partition to a smaller block number?
(3) Is there some quicker way to get the partitions reversed other than
reinstallation?
Thanks - jon

kphotoalbum tips?
by Ian Malone
Does anyone use kphotoalbum? It seems to do /almost/ exactly what I
want in terms of flexible tagging, but the html albums it exports
don't look great (both its file|html export and the html export
plugin), has anyone had any success customizing it? Thought I'd ask
here before disappearing across to their mailing list.
Thanks

FDISK problems
by potat0
OS= Fedora 10
I have a secondary 250GB disk of which I created a 50G partition on to try and set-up an LFS system. I finished with the LFS system and now I want to destroy the partition and reclaim all of the 250GB. So i simply ran fdisk /dev/sdb and deleted the 2 Linux partitions ( one 83 and one swap). I then created a new partition as primary partition #1. fdisk appears to see the entire disk....I'm able to start at cylinder 1 and end at 30401 which is 250GB, however when i mount the partition it's shows as only 50G.....What the hell is going on here???
