Anyone using Skype on FC11 ?
by jack craig
Hi folks,
After the base sw install, i am getting audio capture & audio playback
errors when i try to make a test call.
however, these are just icon level msgs; i am less clear how to see the
actual failure details.
besides /var/log/messages, is there any error log for Skype use?

FC11 - flash plugin for Firefox
by Markus Kesaromous
I have posed this question to the firefox folks, but got no answers.
Hoping someone can advise/explain the cause of the problem.
I have installed
firefox-3.5.2-2.fc11.i586
and
flash-plugin-10.0.32.18-release.i386 (from adobe.com).
If I browse to a website like youtube, and open a video
and after viewing the video, I go on to doing oher things,
(without closing the youtube page).
After a while i want to play another video.
Well, the audio gets stuttered, and then I get a repetitive
stutter with lots of echo of the same word/phrase/sound.
Only way for me to fix it is to kill firefox and and restart.
If someone knows of another flash plugin that does not have
this problem, please let me know.
Cheers,
MK

Multiple IP addresses without aliasing?
by Ryan Lynch
Do the Fedora network init scripts support additional secondary IP
addresses without the use of alias labels? Does an option for IPv4
addresses exist that works like IPV6ADDR_SECONDARIES?
I just skimmed /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt, but I
didn't see anything to that effect, so I'm guessing the answer is no,
and I have to use aliases and 'ifcfg-eth?:0' files.

Where is pulseaudio started?
by Steve Blackwell
I found this article:
http://dailypackage.fedorabook.com/index.php?/archives/172-Wednesday-Why-...
but it appears that it no longer applies.
$ ps -ef | grep pulse
steve 30603 1 0 10:07 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio
--start --log-target=syslog
so either pulseaudio was started by init or whatever started it has
since died. Anyway it is not started by gnome-session.
$ ps -ef | grep gnome-session
steve 30486 17079 0 10:07 ? 00:00:00 gnome-session
I can't find any reference to pulseaudio in any init file
# grep pulse /etc/*init*
#
So where does it get started?

F11: CTRL-ALT-F2 not working
by Alain Spineux
Hi
when pressing CTRL-ALTF-F2 to switch to text console, the screen stay
in graphic mode, only the mouse cursor disappears.
I can blindly login, type some command; see the hard disk light blink
at each command, then go back using ALT-F1 and see I logged in on
tty2.
But switching between tty1 an tty2 never change my display.
I have a Laptop Compaq Evo N610c with a ATI RADEON Mobility M7.
It was working fine with FC8.
Any idea ?

Re: Is YUM really a secure pacakage manager ?
by Akshay Wattal
Hi,
Lately i did some research on security issues related to
differnt package managers including YUM and found out that
there can be some vulnerabilities in YUM. So far YUM checks
the signature which is on each individual package,In this
model, the package manager has no signatures to check until
it gets to the point where it downloads the actual packages
it intends to install.
Keeping this in mind the vulnerabilities that are possible
are as follows:
---->Metadata Manipulation Attack: The attack in
this case involves a malicious party responding to a package
manager’s request by making their own metadata, There are
two main things attackers can do First, they can
mix-and-match the versions of packages that are listed.
Second, they can trick clients into thinking that packages
have different dependencies and provide different
functionality than they really do.
In mixing-and-matching vulnerable package versions by
listing them in the same metadata given to a client,
attackers make it more likely that, whatever new package a
client installs, it is installing a version with a known
vulnerability.
---->Freeze Attack: In this an attacker can keep giving
the client a single version of the metadata starting at one
point in time (that is, “freezing” the metadata), the
attacker can prevent the client from knowing about new
metadata and thus new packages that are available that fix
known vulnerabilities.
---->Endless data Attack: It involves a malicious party
responding to a client request, be it for metadata or for a
package, with an endless stream of data. The possible
effects include filling up the partition where the package
manager saves downloaded files or exhausting memory.
These are few "possible" vulnerabilities which can be found
in YUM.

[Off-topic?] Fedora & gnome-main-menu
by Chris Thielen
Apologies if this message does not fit the subject matter of
fedora-list, but as a large resource of Fedora users, I feel I may
receive a decent answer here.
SUSE (I believe it is the only one) employs the gnome-main-menu applet
in replacement of the regular GNOME menu applet, seen here:
http://debaday.debian.net/2007/03/07/gnome-main-menu-a-new-attractive-men... . Many of you have probably heard of this applet before - it is a bit inspired by the expanded Windows XP start menu, and offers one-click access to recent applications, documents, and includes a search field, which I believe uses beagle or a similar software.
I know it is possible to compile this for Fedora, but does anyone know
why this hasn't appeared either as a regularly maintained optional
package, or perhaps in consideration to replace the regular main menu by
default? Would it be correct to assume no package exists because no one
has stepped up, and that Fedora does not have it by default because the
GNOME upstream does not have it by default?
Thanks for any light you can shed into this. I understand this may have
been talked about before and I'm just out of the loop, or perhaps I'm in
the minority with my enjoyment of this particular applet.

Is there a live cd download of F-11 available that has some updates
