VirtualBox VBoxVMM.so: cannot open shared object file

The full messages is: VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: VBoxVMM.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory The VBoxVMM.so file is in the same directory as the VirtualBox.so file. Also: ldd /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so linux-gate.so.1 => (0x00bec000) libXinerama.so.1 => /usr/lib/libXinerama.so.1 (0x00110000) libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x00961000) VBoxVMM.so => /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxVMM.so (0xb7625000)... shows its in the correct dir. This thread suggests it has something to do with glibc: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=645500 This thread suggests it has been fixed: https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1465 If all of this information is correct will it soon become part of the FC13 yum update stream? Init fails on FC14

Hi, after a boot into Gnome and opening a root console, switching to runlevel 3 (or whatever) fails. "init 3" or "telinit 3" does simply nothing, and the box begins to lock up. There's no problem to boot into runlevel 3 or whatever. Does anybody here encounter the same, and know a solution?

Using ionice -c3 in f13: system seems less responsive than under f12

Hi: My system spends a lot of its time processing video data, often with not much numerical processing involved - just remuxing or making an iso image. atop often shows disk activity above 90%. I do most of this using ionice -c3, (ie 'idle' scheduling) which is supposed to reduce impact on other tasks. The man page says "The impact of idle io processes on normal system activity should be zero" and certainly under f12 that seemed at least approximately true; but under f13 terminal response is often very sluggish when these tasks are running. Using kde 4.5.3, scheduling elevator=deadline (as in f12). Am I expecting the right thing? Does anyone else see this? John P

F12 -> F14 (via preupgrade), not so smooth

Last night, after I successfully upgraded my F13 test desktop from F13->F14 w/preupgrade, I started the same operation on my F12 laptop. The results were not so good. X86_64, Asus S96J laptop, w/ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 video card, IPW3945, 2GB RAM, 350GB disk. 1) I had recently installed WICD (from ATRpms, so shoot me) because it worked better for me than NetworkManager under F12. Under F14, it fails to start properly (yes, its the fc14 version now). So, I disabled it and re-enabled NetworkManager. I have networking back for now. 2) X11 no longer starts up. I'm using the radeon driver for my ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]. It was working just fine (as fine can be with the radeon driver), but now it dies with a seg fault with only 3 frames on the stack. I have re-configured to run the VESA driver, but, I miss my 1200x800 native resolution. VESA can only do 1024x768. I can attach my (used to be working) xorg.conf for anyone interested, but it fails in exactly the same way if I delete it as well. I can try again and send along an Xorg.0.log if it will help. 2a) VESA has lots of problems returning to a proper video mode. If I run dosbox in full-screen mode, when it returns to X11, the resolution is less than stellar. Its the same size, but it seems like every other pixel is missing. Heck, All I have to do is switch to a diferent virtual console, and X11 is hosed when I return to it. Even the color pallette seems to be changed. I have to logout and restart the X server to get it back. 3) VMWare-Server won't compile. Seems it can't find the kernel headers. Its looking in /usr/src/linux/include, but that directory seems to be missing. (I built it successfully a number of times under F12.) I have kernel, kernel-devel, and kernel-headers installed. That used to be enough for VMWare-server. 4) There are a number of python errors during bootup. They are not in DMESG. 5) the console screen during bootup contains lines starting with [ [ mmm.nnnn ] messages that were not visible on F12. It makes looking at the [OK] and [Failed] service messges difficult. I'm sure I've missed something else (I haven't tested suspend/hibernate yet), but for now, this is what I've noticed. Imagine my surprise at No Network and No Graphics after completion of preupgrade. Not a lot of fun. I still have an F11 server that I need to upgrade, but not until I get my laptop's problems sorted out. And, for those of you who are still reading, yes, I have read both the F13 and F14 release notes, but nothing stands out (to me) that I may have missed. Suggestions welcome. -- Kevin J. OOo and delta RPM

Is there a problem with openoffice.org and delta RPMs? I've just done a yum update on F14 and all the OOo packages were downloaded in their entirety, whereas about 30 others came in as deltas. And it's not like OOo is small. And this is the second update in a week. If it's going to carry on like this I'll exclude OOo from updates: I only use it once in a blue moon to examine documents in proprietary formats. Ron

Build custom Xen Kernel

Greetings , I have a Fedora 14 64 bit installation running on a machine with a dual core AMD 64 bit at 3,00 GHz cpu , 2 GB of RAM and a lot of hard disk space ( the Fedora installation resides on a 1,5 TB hard disk drive ) . I have succesfully installed and run a virtual machine running Windows XP Professional under QEMU but now i wanted to do it with Xen . I have google for it and it seems that the first thing am missing is a Xen kernel . Since am quite new on this thing i was wondering if there is somewhere a step by step guide with instructions on how to install and run a virtual machine under Xen instead of QEMU . flash.exe files

Hi, List! Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no way to run windows exe flash movies under linux without wine? I have a foreign language video tutorial packaged for windows users. On the course dvd there's all data (video lessons, images and texts in xml format). Testing it under VirtualBox windoze xp reveals that main executable (start.exe) opening flash player with different menus and buttons. Without that it's difficult to organize all that stuff in right order. However performance of video under VirtualBox is very poor. And I don't want to install wine on my machine. It would be a big hole in security. So, any suggestions? TIA -- Linux is obsolete -- Andrew Tanenbaum

Fedora 14, wireless keyboards and encryption

Hi there, So, I'm having a problem with my Fedora 14 setup. I've recently installed the distro on the machine, and set up full disk encryption using the standard method in Anaconda. However, on the passphrase screen (the one which appears as the OS starts), any input on my wireless USB keyboard (this one: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223792) doesn't work - there appears to be no response to input from the keyboard. If I connect a wired keyboard (this isn't a long-term solution, however - the box is to become a media server, hidden behind my TV), then I can enter the passphrase and continue just fine - once I get to the normal user login screen, then I can enter my password and log in then. I don't believe it's a BIOS problem as I can use the keyboard to navigate around the BIOS setup screens no problem. I did set up my machine using the wired keyboard, and only changed to the wireless one at a later date, so I'm wondering if some relevant kmod is missing when it's required, or something like that. Any help to get my wireless keyboard up and running so I can enter my passphrase with it would be much appreciated! Regards, Chris Northwood

Installing Openshot video editor

Hi guys, I'd like to install openshot. As it is not available in any repo I picked the rpm package from here. http://killobyte.com/openshot/ Unfortunately it needs python2.6, giving me the following error: mlt-python-0.5.4-1.fc14.x86_64 requires python(abi) = 2.6 openshot-1.2.2-1.fc13.noarch requires python(abi) = 2.6 I'm using f14 so there's only python2.7 in the repos. Where could I find python2.6? -- robert
