Is it just me??
I've noticed, on several machines (PC, laptop, netbook) that if
the machine has no connection, or thinks it has none, the gpk function
claims there are no updates; but if I doubt that and run yum update, it
may immediately get over a hundred -- or at least report a failure to

I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is.
I had a working F13 system on my Aspire Laptop. I upgraded to F14 off
If I boot up and use a F13 kernel, everything is fine. If I boot with
the F14 kernel, no sound.
Running the alsamixer shows as if sound is there (the levels jump
around), but no sound comes out the speakers. I have checked the alsa
mixer to make sure everything is turned up, and stored the settings
(alsoctl store 0).

after a boot into Gnome and opening a root console,
switching to runlevel 3 (or whatever) fails. "init 3" or "telinit 3"
does simply nothing, and the box begins to lock up. There's no problem to
boot into runlevel 3 or whatever.
Does anybody here encounter the same, and know a solution?
Hi: My system spends a lot of its time processing video data, often
with not much numerical processing involved - just remuxing or making an
iso image. atop often shows disk activity above 90%. I do most of this
using ionice -c3, (ie 'idle' scheduling) which is supposed to reduce
impact on other tasks. The man page says "The impact of idle io
processes on normal system activity should be zero" and certainly
under f12 that seemed at least approximately true; but under f13
terminal response is often very sluggish when these tasks are running.
Using kde 4.5.3, scheduling elevator=deadline (as in f12).
Am I expecting the right thing? Does anyone else see this?
Last night, after I successfully upgraded my F13 test desktop from
F13->F14 w/preupgrade, I started the same operation on my F12 laptop.
The results were not so good.
X86_64, Asus S96J laptop, w/ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 video card,
IPW3945, 2GB RAM, 350GB disk.
1) I had recently installed WICD (from ATRpms, so shoot me) because it
worked better for me than NetworkManager under F12. Under F14, it fails
to start properly (yes, its the fc14 version now). So, I disabled it
and re-enabled NetworkManager. I have networking back for now.
2) X11 no longer starts up. I'm using the radeon driver for my ATI
Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]. It was working just fine
(as fine can be with the radeon driver), but now it dies with a seg
fault with only 3 frames on the stack. I have re-configured to run the
VESA driver, but, I miss my 1200x800 native resolution. VESA can only
do 1024x768. I can attach my (used to be working) xorg.conf for anyone
interested, but it fails in exactly the same way if I delete it as well.
I can try again and send along an Xorg.0.log if it will help.
2a) VESA has lots of problems returning to a proper video mode. If I
run dosbox in full-screen mode, when it returns to X11, the resolution
is less than stellar. Its the same size, but it seems like every other
pixel is missing. Heck, All I have to do is switch to a diferent
virtual console, and X11 is hosed when I return to it. Even the color
pallette seems to be changed. I have to logout and restart the X server
to get it back.
3) VMWare-Server won't compile. Seems it can't find the kernel
headers. Its looking in /usr/src/linux/include, but that directory
seems to be missing. (I built it successfully a number of times under
F12.) I have kernel, kernel-devel, and kernel-headers installed. That
used to be enough for VMWare-server.
4) There are a number of python errors during bootup. They are not in
5) the console screen during bootup contains lines starting with [ [
mmm.nnnn ] messages that were not visible on F12. It makes looking
at the [OK] and [Failed] service messges difficult.
I'm sure I've missed something else (I haven't tested suspend/hibernate
yet), but for now, this is what I've noticed.
Imagine my surprise at No Network and No Graphics after completion of
preupgrade. Not a lot of fun.
I still have an F11 server that I need to upgrade, but not until I get
my laptop's problems sorted out.
And, for those of you who are still reading, yes, I have read both the
F13 and F14 release notes, but nothing stands out (to me) that I may

Is there a problem with openoffice.org and delta RPMs? I've just
done a yum update on F14 and all the OOo packages were downloaded in
their entirety, whereas about 30 others came in as deltas. And it's
not like OOo is small. And this is the second update in a week.

@ the end of last week I was given access to the LTSP Package on Fedora.
I have the src of ltsp-5.2.4 and am in the process of getting this into
and .rpm for Fedora 13 & Fedora 14 (x86 & x86_64).
This is going to take a little bit of time to get this release into an
.rpm, but we hope to have this done within the next week or so...
I first need to get my head around how the current version is packaged
and then we should be able to get the new version packaged the same way
to try and make this all as seamless as possible.

I have a Fedora 14 64 bit installation running on a machine with a
dual core AMD 64 bit at 3,00 GHz cpu ,
2 GB of RAM and a lot of hard disk space ( the Fedora installation
resides on a 1,5 TB hard disk drive ) .
I have succesfully installed and run a virtual machine running Windows
XP Professional under QEMU but
now i wanted to do it with Xen . I have google for it and it seems that
the first thing am missing is a Xen
kernel . Since am quite new on this thing i was wondering if there is
somewhere a step by step guide with
instructions on how to install and run a virtual machine under Xen
instead of QEMU .
