Package conflict with recent update
by Alex
Hi,
I have an FC13 x86_64 system, and with today's updates, there are a
few file conflicts:
Test Transaction Errors: file
/usr/share/locale/af/LC_MESSAGES/glib20.mo from install of
glib2-2.26.0-2.fc14.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
glib2-2.24.1-1.fc13.i686
file /usr/share/locale/am/LC_MESSAGES/glib20.mo from install of
glib2-2.26.0-2.fc14.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
glib2-2.24.1-1.fc13.i686
file /usr/share/locale/ar/LC_MESSAGES/glib20.mo from install of
glib2-2.26.0-2.fc14.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
glib2-2.24.1-1.fc13.i686
file /usr/share/locale/as/LC_MESSAGES/glib20.mo from install of
glib2-2.26.0-2.fc14.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
glib2-2.24.1-1.fc13.i686
file /usr/share/locale/ast/LC_MESSAGES/glib20.mo from install of
glib2-2.26.0-2.fc14.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
glib2-2.24.1-1.fc13.i686
file /usr/share/locale/az/LC_MESSAGES/glib20.mo from install of
glib2-2.26.0-2.fc14.x86_64 conflicts with file from package
glib2-2.24.1-1.fc13.i686
file /usr/share/locale/be/LC_MESSAGES/glib20.mo from install of
glib2-2.26.0-2.fc14.x86_64...
What is the resolution to this? I've tried removing the i686 version
of glib2, but it has too many dependencies. Is this a problem with my
system, or the dependencies created upstream? "yum check" returns no
errors.
Thanks,
Alex

EmbeddedObject.odt no text window
by Randolph Jones
I have fedora 13, OO 3.2.1 with sdk
I installed the EmbeddedObject.odt using the
OwnEmbeddedObjectFactory etc.
Instructions say insert-ole object will offer 'simple java text window'
but dialog pops up with spreadsheet, draw, etc and no text window
selecting spreadsheet produces spreadsheet, but entering string and
saving does not preserve string on reopen
any ideas why no java text window appears?
TIA

FC14 boot message - udev configuration warning
by William Stock
Somewhere along the line I started getting these warnings at the
beginning of the boot:
Starting udev: udevd[455]: BUS= will be removed in a future udev
version, please use SUBSYSTEM= to match the event device, or
SUBSYSTEMS= to match a parent device,
in /etc/udev/rules.d/85-pcscd_egate.rules:3
udevd[455]: SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version,
please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to
match a parent device,
in /etc/udev/rules.d/85-pcscd_egate.rules:3
udevd[455]: BUS= will be removed in a future udev version,
please use SUBSYSTEM= to match the event device, or SUBSYSTEMS=
to match a parent device,
in /etc/udev/rules.d/85-pcscd_egate.rules:5
Is this something that I have to worry about or will it be taken care of
by the developers? The relevant lines in the rules file are:
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0973", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0001",
ACTION=="add", RUN+="/usr/sbin/pcscd --hotplug"
BUS=="usb", ENV{PRODUCT}=="973/1/100", ACTION=="remove", RUN
+="/usr/sbin/pcscd --hotplug"
I've never done anything with the udev daemon, and don't have a clue.
Thanks

F14 - second screen as separate X display
by Andy Campbell
Hi, I'm just trying to gage if I'm in a very small minority
wanting my second screen configured as a separate desktop
( X display ), anyone else out there using this config ?
I've not been able to upgrade to F14, due to a bug
that stops most applets being added to the gnome-panel
on the second screen. I've logged a bug ( 650638 ) and
done some analysis myself - but its still at a status
of NEW after almost two months. I thought it might
get "some" attention.
I use my second screen for stuff like IM and music players,
monitoring. Its also a lot lower resolution than my
primary monitor so its more manageable as separate
X-Display.

Lexmark Printer X75 does not work
by Benjamin
Hi everyone!
I have tried several times to install the lexmark X75 on my F14 (and
also in F13) but it didn´t work. I have tried the following guides for
the printer:
http://home.online.no/~enrio/
and:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/hardware-peripherals/13305-driver-lexmar...
both guides didn´t work. When i install the driver everything works
fine. Then I add the printer in cups and that also works fine. But then,
when I try to print a testpage cups says:
gestoppt
/"rastertolxx74.c:1792: Unknown option
job-uuid=urn:uuid:36e5e988-d359-3c30-68a8-f35f70e14833."
/
That´s all and the printer does nothing at all. I couldn´t find a
solution to this problem. HOpe someone can help me or encountered the
same problem (which is of course not suprising with lexmark printers).
Thx Guys, Benjamin.

Let's talk about yum and p2p in Fedora
by S Mathias
Are there any active project about it?
like:
http://www.camrdale.org/apt-p2p/
for Debian.
Why doesn't it have viability? Why does it have?
What are the security issues regarding it?
e.g.:
No port forwarding is needed in p2p (no need for open ports [? fixme]): http://samy.pl/pwnat/ - these kind of projects will be more prevalent, as the isp's will show up with the Large Scale NAT's - http://tech.slashdot.org/story/10/12/17/2226230/Carrier-Trick-To-Save-IPv... - soon we will run out of ipv4 addresses.
Yum does the gpgcheck, so we just need audited code, that does the p2p part. (i'm not a developer, sorry).
Remember this video(?): Twitter - Murder Bittorrent Deploy System
http://vimeo.com/11280885
Common sense: if i need to spread lot's of files no matter small or big, to many-many-many-many pc's, then i would give a 10 Mbit line to the master server, and the remaining job is done by the people, so that in this way, they could contribute to the project.
The Fedora installer could contain a question: how would you like to receive updates? [if e.g.: GNOME is installed, the updates would be "forced*", because it's likely not a server, just a desktop pc] - and the answers would be: by http or by p2p (or p2p with encryption)
What is you're opinion? Objection? Please tell me, because i just can't understand why doesn't this brilliant technology/method spreads. It would be very-very scalable.
+ if i go to the main website, and click "Get Fedora"
https://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora
it would need to accentuate the ISO download by torrent, not http, the servers would be way more "relieved", and ready for any expected, or unexpected loads (ddos, a version of Fedora is out, growing number of Fedora users).
I'm sure there would be many Fedora or other RPM based distribution users, who would happily seed the packages. Broadband connections, HDD's are cheap in 2011.
*by forcing i meant it should install updates without asking, the primary security relies on that the packages are up-to-date or not.
**_I LOVE FEDORA_, i just wanted to write down my opinion, sorry
Thank you for reading and have a nice day.

Network communication between hosts
by derleader __
Hi,
I need advice about developing C++ program. I need to develop 2 application which must communicate via network using SSL encryption. The problem is in which format to exchange the data. I can use XML format to exchange data between the hosts but a lot traffic will be generated. What are the usual practices to exchange data between the hosts?
