How do I set up DHCP in order to upgrade the software on my router?
by Colin Paul Adams
I'm trying to upgrade the software on my broadband router. The closest
instructions I could find to doing it are here:
http://markferry.net/Network.SpeedtouchUpgrade
Those instructions are Debian/Ubuntu specific, but I figured I ought to
be able to adapt them. However I'm not having any luck.
What I've done is:
yum install tftp-server
yum install dhcp
I've updated /etc/xinetd.d/tftp to look like this:
# default: off
# description: The tftp server serves files using the trivial file transfer \
# protocol. The tftp protocol is often used to boot diskless \
# workstations, download configuration files to network-aware printers, \
# and to start the installation process for some operating systems.
service tftp
{
socket_type = dgram
protocol = udp
wait = yes
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd
server_args = -s /var/lib/tftpboot
disable = no
per_source = 11
cps = 100 2
flags = IPv4
}
(i.e. all I changed was disable = no)
/var/lib/tftpboot contains the software file (ZZQIAA8.225.bli).
I edited
/etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf
to look like this:
#
# DHCP Server Configuration file.
# see /usr/share/doc/dhcp*/dhcpd.conf.sample
# see 'man 5 dhcpd.conf'
#
authoritative;
use-host-decl-names on;
ddns-update-style none;
option domain-name "colin.demon.co.uk";
next-server 192.168.254.201;
filename "linux/pxelinux.0";
allow bootp;
subnet 192.168.254.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option broadcast-address 192.168.254.255;
}
group {
host 192.168.254.254 { hardware ethernet 00:14:7F:F8:83:DD; }
}
iptables and iptables6 are disabled.
I start the dhcp service. Then I telnet to the router and issue the
upgrade
command. I then see the following in syslog:

That last message is repeated ad-inifinitum. Well, not quite. Eventually
the router restarts into mormal operation mode, and the software version
is unchanged. And the following lines of syslog appear (which I think
are of no consequence):

So I THINK that the repeated BOOTREQUEST messages mean that the request
isn't being honoured, and the router keeps repeating the request until
it times out (that's all guesswork).
What might I try for a better result?

Support
by chris rawling
Hey,
I was wondering why Fedora 14 does not have an automatic detection and
setup for a BCM4321 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless network adapter?
If a can get concise instructions to setup wireless networking for a
Macbook 4,1 1.0, 160GB, 2GHz, Daul core 2.4GHz running single boot
Fedora 14, Kernal Linux 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86_64 and GNOME 2.32.0, with
a BCM4321 802.11 a/b/g/n wl adapter, it would solve my problems.
Cheers!!!
Chris...

Fedora 12 automatically reboots
by akash haibatpure
I install Fedora 12 on my machine ( configuration RAM - 1GB HDD-160 GB AMD processor)
I used Fedora 2 month it works properly but before some days OS hangs and I reboot system after that when I try to log in into system, system automatically reboots.
After lot of try I install fresh copy Fedora 12 then also same problem happens with me i.e. when I logged in system automatically reboots.
Can you explain why this happens and solution for this problem.

window autoraise after gaining focus in Gnome shell
by Sam Varshavchik
Is anyone else seeing problems in Gnome shell with the configuration setting
that autoraises a window after it gains focus (this is used together with
the option to have a window gain focus automatically when the pointer moves
after it).
Not all the time, but sometimes only some portion of the window gets redrawn
on top. I have to either click, drag, or type in the window for it to get
redrawn, on top, in its entirety. That's as best as I can describe what I'm
seeing.
This started happening some time recently. I use nouveau on NV4x. First I
thought that a kernel update broke something, but reverting to the older
kernel did not help.
The annoyance level has finally crossed the threshold for me to switch back
to Compiz.

I didn't see anyone else suggest this, so I'll just mention
that if you can remove the staples at each end (it's probably
not stapled in the middle, unless it was installed before the
drywall), you could tie/tape a piece of cat5e or cat6 to it
and 'reuse' the cat3 by pulling in the new cable with it. :)~

Fedora 14 desktop fails install at the very end of the process stating something like, "Can't mount /dev/mapper/hard-drive....."
by Bruce B
Hi Everyone,
I am saddened that I can't install any Linux distro with ease on my HP
m8530f computer which runs on a m2n78-la motherboard. It has a Phenom CPU, 6
SATA ports and probably a fakeRaid (at least that's what I guess is causing
problem).
The Fedora 14 Desktop install goes all the way to the end and then I get a
fail message due to not being able to mount /dev/mapper/xxxxx.
Can anyone please advise what steps I can take to remedy this issue or if
you know of a particular version that works with this motherboard?
The motherboard only has SATA mode or disabled for HardDrive mode and no any
other options. Seems like this is an HP custom made motherboard from Asus
hence the limited options in Bios setup.
I was told to do this but I am not sure where to type "linux nodmraid"
because I have clicking the Install button from the desktop and there is no
option to type "linux nodmraid"
"Start your installation by hitting the tab key, then the space key once, then
type and enter, linux nodmraid"
If any other solutions come to your mind or you can explain "nodmraid"
please enlighten me.
Thanks a lot.

firefox, scaled images, and performance?
by Tom Horsley
Has anyone else noticed a distinct tendency in firefox to
get hopelessly bogged down and unresponsive when it is
displaying a vary large image it has scaled to fit on the
screen, and then to become perfectly responsive once you
click on the image to display it full size?
For example:
http://www.widescreenwallpapers.in/bulkupload/widescreen/HD/Arctic%20sunr...
If I try to do a "save image as" and navigate around the
file browser to save the image in a directory it takes
a little time to navigate to, the browser gets all hung
up.
If I first click on the image to make it full size, I have
no problem navigating anywhere.
What the heck is firefox doing? Am I the only one who
sees it?
