Many bugs: pdf, Thunderbird, Firefox, goes knows.
by Marcel Rieux
Some people seem to have problems opening pdf documents with Fedora
12, but my problem is slightly different.
Until 2 updates ago, everything was fine, but now, if I click a pdf
file at Google's, it downloads but doesn't open I click Tools,
Downloads the click the pdf file.
That's not all. If I click a URL in Thunderbird, it doesn't open. I've
got to right click it, then choose Copy, then I'm asked if I want to
open it in the browser, I click Firefox, it opens.
So, I've sent me a message with a URL. When I click it, I receive the
following message:
"Could not open the link.
(This can be copy/pasted)
"Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib64/firefox-3.5.6/firefox"
(No such file or directory). Of course, I have 3.5.8 installed."
(This part of the error message cannot be copy/pasted. What's the
fundamental reason for this?)
Maybe if I could redirect the system to the right copy of Firefox, it
would solve all problems? How is this done?
I must admit I've seen the little red rat appear quite often lately in
the top panel. I try not to care too much about it, but it seems there
are consequences.
10 days ago, one copy of Firefox after another started opening. I
jumped on the modem switch. Then, ALT-F4 couldn't stop the number of
open windows from increasing. I rebooted, but the reboot process
didn't work: the screen went black before the boot screen and
everything stopped there with the HD emitting loud clicks.
I went into the BIOS and noticed pretty much every option -- by this I
mean even the failsafe option -- had been grayed out. Tried to reboot
in vain. Went back to the BIOS and saved the options available before
quitting. The system booted fine.
I'll have to check the BIOS <=> CMOS option to reload the defaults. Or
I'll just remove the battery.

OT: ISPs: Linux's role nowadays
by Marcel Rieux
I was under the impression that, at most small ISPs, Linux had
replaced Unix and played a central role in making things work. But
today, I spoke to an ISP employee who told me that Linux was only used
for Web servers and that, for routing and firewalling, nobody escaped
companies Cisco and Juniper which provide "solutions" where part of
the software has been integrated into hardware for efficiency
purposes.
Is this correct? Are there more explanations you can provide to make
the picture clearer?
Thanks!

firefox / rhythmbox sound issues
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I've noticed that when I have firefox open (haven't checked this w/ other
browsers) and have watched/listened to a file with sound, I can't later
open rhythmbox and listen to a sound file or podcast.
Is this a configuration issue where both apps can be open and used at
least alternately, if not concurrently?
Thanks.

Local cache / 'repo' of updates and added RPM's
by JayLinux
I had to re-install Fedora 10 on a home desktop PC. In regard to this:
Is it possible to have a local cache/ "repository" of all
1) Updates (Critical, Security, Bug-fixes), and
2) Additional installed rpm's (that were installed through PackageKit), e.g.
Opera, Adobe Reader, etc.
so that I do not have to download all those again (800 MB + D/L)
This would be similar to the 'aptonCD' package in Ubuntu (
http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/)
APTonCD is a tool with a graphical interface which allows you to create one
> or more CDs or DVDs (you choose the type of media) with all of the packages
> you've downloaded via APT-GET or APTITUDE, creating a removable repository
> that you can use on other computers.
> APTonCD will also allow you to automatically create media with all of your
> .deb packages located in one specific repository, so that you can install
> them into your computers without the need for an internet connection.
Thanks,
Jay

fedora on flash drive
by Joerg Bergmann
I use a 64GB SLC flash drive (SATA2) as the only drive in my
PC (no traditional hd at all). There was ongoing discussion
about specialized flash file systems, but I still use ext4
file systems. Is there any suggestion for a better format?
Will there be a better format in fedora 13?
Thanks!

PolicyKit?
by Tom Horsley
The freedesktop.org web site has masses of documentation on
PolicyKit explaining in excrutiating detail all sorts of xml
configuration.
Meanwhile, no rpm with "polkit" in the name has installed
any xml files on fedora 12.
So whats up with that? Did they completely redesign
PolicyKit and not bother to even add a one line warning
at the beginning of the docs that everything the docs
say is now completely wrong?
Just curious...

firefox flash plugin duplicates!
by mike cloaked
I discovered that when I used the firefox plugin checker at
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
I noticed that despite having updated the flash-plugin via yum and that the
rpm -q flash-plugin command showed I had the latest version, the web page
showed that I did not have the latest version!
Going to about:plugins showed that I now have both the current and up to
date version as well as the previous out of date one!
Within firefox I can go to Tools->Add-ons and then disable the older flash
plugin.
However this highlights a problem, in that merely installing the newest
flash-plugin does not appear to give you protection if firefox thinks the
old one is still current!
The question then is how do you actually remove the old version?
