F12: /var/run/utmp: what is it for?
by Dan Thurman
Is /var/run/utmp supposed to contain anything?
I note that for some reason or another selinux attempts
to read or write in this area and I fail to understand what
it is used for. This directory contains nothing in it.
Yes, I posted the specific avc denial in selinux group and
could setup a policy to allow access to it but I'd like to
know what I am getting into before proceeding.

Sftp does not work after upgrade fo F12
by Gianfranco Durin
Dear all,
I have used for ages ssh and sftp with Fedora 10 on my machines, then I
upgrade them receenty using preupgrade to Fedora 12.
SSH still works very well, but sftp fails with error "Could not
initialize SFTP session". I get this in both directions, I mean when
using sftp from one machine to the other and reverse.
The problem is that I have no idea on where I should look to understand
the problem... could someone help me?
Many thanks

What User/Group are you running these scripts as and what are the
permissions on the files?

gconf help
by Steve Blackwell
I trying to create a user and limit them to only one virtual workspace
from a script but my results make me think I am not understanding
something.
In the script I use useradd to create the user with the default
settings. Then I copied this file:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<gconf>
<entry name="num_workspaces" mtime="1269905813" type="int"
value="1"/>
</entry>
</gconf>
to the new user's .gconf/apps/metacity/general/%gconf.xml file after
making the necessary parent directories. Now, here is where it gets
strange.
If I leave the permissions set to 755 and the owner as root, when the
new user logs in, the workspace_switcher applet shows just 1 workspace
but if I correct the ownership of the file and directory to be owned by
the new user, then the user gets the default 4 workspaces when logging
in.
When a user logs in, don't all the %gconf.xml directories get read?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve.

One way, without changing things is to use a virtual terminal (ctl-alt-f1 through ctl-alt-f6)
You are at the command line level.
another way is with the sudo command
cd /etc/
sudo vi sudoers
look at the line with root
add your logon id beneath it or at the tail end of the file
exit after saving
Respond to password request
sudo su
password
or sudo su -
password:
There is a third way, and that is to change some /etc/pam.d/gdm* files. That will allow you to log into gnome as root. The advantage here is that you can make good use of the GUI interface (example, drag and drop, cut and paste, etc.)

What is /usr/share/locale?
by Beartooth
I have an ASUS EeePC 701 (the earliest smallest slowest, afaik),
currently running Omega (Fedora for netbooks). I'm looking to remove
everything I can, to make space for my own stuff. (I've long since added
a memory card.)
"locale" in other apps seems often to mean languages -- many,
many languages. I will use only English on this machine, when I use it at
all. (It's too small for my old eyes and very large arthritic hands; I'll
replace it when I can afford to.)
If "locale" does mean languages, meseems I ought to be able to do
a lot of removing. How do I best do that?

KDE: Shell files won't execute properly
by Jim
FC12-KDE-4
Shell files (/bin/bash) won't execute when Left clicking on them, single
or double click.
They won't even execute if I tell them "Open With" Konsole, Konsole will
open , but file won't execute.
If I do a bash "filename" then it will execute in konsole.
