by mike lan
Hello
I've installed a Fedora 12 kde live cd on a local area network, that I want
to keep safe from hacking
( specially from network admin. !!)
Is a default fedora 12 install secure enough ?
or do i still take some measures to secure the pc ?
I need also to monitor scans or probes to the pc

sun jdk vs java-1.6.0-openjdk
by Bob Hartung
Hi,
I have loaded Fedora13 without a hitch and am impressed by the
improvements!
However, I am just now beginning Java programming and I am wondering
if there is any substantial difference between java-1.6.0-openjdk and
the sun jdk.
If I decide to remove the openjava and work only with the Sun JDK at
this time, how do i make sure that all of the many openjava related
files are removed?
Thanks,
Bob

Blue screen of death
by Alex
Hi,
As if to say, "F"-you, the screen changed from my normal desktop, with
Firefox, Azureus, a few terminals, and a few VMs running, to a solid
blue screen with just the Fedora squiggly 'F' in the middle of the
screen, and the whole computer locked up.
Completely dead. Catatonic. Unresponsive. Nothing in the logs.
What the hell happened?
This is really aggravating, because it has been one problem after
another, and I'm beginning to rethink my decision on this desktop.
Ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

Sun Java double-click interval
by Pasan
I use Fedora 13 64bit with latest updates.
Applications using sun jre (for an example matlab) has a very fast
double-click interval. This makes double-clicks get interpreted as two
single clicks.
When I add the line
'*multiClickTime: 400'
to $HOME/.Xdefaults and invoke
xrdb -merge $HOME/.Xdefaults
double-click interval in matlab (and all other sun java applications) works
fine.
But every time I login I have to invoke the command 'xrdb -merge
$HOME/.Xdefaults'
I have a feeling $HOME/.Xdefaults' is not checked by the X session.
What's the correct filename in Fedora where I have to put double-click
interval?
Thanks
Pasan

Fedora users on powerpc
by JD
Is there another list that is dedicated to fedora users on powerpc?
I had asked a question here about booting F12 on powerbook G4,
and no one answered. I assume there are no fedora/powerpc
users on this list.

camera won't automount
by Claude Jones
I'm having problem with one device, a Nikon D90 camera, that won't
automount. At some point in the past, I had set something that would
cause it to be detected, but the only option offered was to download
pictures with Digikam. (At some time in the past, the device notifier
would offer options including opening the device in Dolphin which is
what I'd prefer.) For some reason, this function didn't work properly
because Digikam would open and stall on the process of detecting my
images, and never would open. I have a very large image archive and this
process could take a couple of minutes in the past, but it would
eventually open. This camera will mount under Windows; however, in
Windows, the icon never appears that allows you to eject it gracefully
once you're ready to dismount it. When I attach the camera to the
Windows box, it automatically opens an explorer window and shows me the
folder structure, but, the eject button never appears.
What I've done:
I've gone into the device notifier widget settings and tried finding
there, a way to disable the mount with Digikam option, but could find
nothing there that affected the behavior
I've removed the device notifier widget and re-installed it - no difference
I found the auto-mount files "device-automounter-kcmrc" and
"kded-device-automounterrc" and renamed them and restarted KDE - no
difference
I removed Digikam (I really don't want to use this app anyway, as I find
it cumbersome) - now, the device notifier doesn't ever show the camera
I re-formatted the memory card in the camera
Lots of google searches on this issue, but haven't found anything else
that helped
Tried my other camera, a Fuji 9000, and several pen drives - these all
automount successfully and offer various options for how to mount the
devices with various applications
The strange behavior under Windows (it automatically opens a folder with
the camera memory card's root folder displayed, BUT, never produces the
eject icon) makes me suspect this is some issue with the camera, but,
what could it be?

Problem with an external usb HD - slow usb
by Luigi Castro Cardeles
Hi list,
I use fedora 12 on a dell inspiron 1545 laptop.
(2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64).
i have a external usb hd and i can't make it connect like a usb 2.0 device.
this device is ntfs format
I check if the device is using ehci (dmesg after i plug the device)
[root@localhost ~]# dmesg | grep USB
usb 2-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
I check if this device is connected on a usb 2.0
[root@localhost ~]# lsusb
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 015: ID 0471:2021 Philips
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I mount the device with this options:
/dev/sdc1 on /media/hd_backup type fuseblk
(rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096)
but when i use cp, mv or rsync, the max speed i get is max 6MB/s (a lot
800kB/s).
If i use this device on Windows (tested with Vista and Seven), i get much
high transfer rate.
I read about sync and async options, but if i put sync or async on fstab, it
does not alter the transfer rate.
Is this the normal upload transfer rate? I am doing something wrong?

Minimum Required RPM Packages for Running Fedora
by siavash ghiasvand
Dear All,
For some reasons I want to know what are "Minimum Required RPM
Packages" for installing fedora on a PC.
At installation time, we can remove all optional packages and after
removing them Fedora will install with nearly 200 packages! But, many
of these packages are not necessary, for example OpenSSH, WireLess,
etc.
Then, when I tried to remove those unwanted packages after
installation, many many dependencies appeared.
So, I have two questions:
1- What are Minimum Required RPM Packages for installing Fedora? (just
booting up the system with kernel and then, a simple command line
access)
2- How can I reach this minimal system? (As I described above those
dependencies make it impossible to remove unwanted packages after
installation and also there is no option to remove unwanted packages
before installation)
Sincerely yours,
Siavash Ghiasvand

fedora power management not working in f13
by Chris Rouch
I have a duel boot laptop. if i boot it into f12, using kde, and pull
out the power cord, i get a popup message telling me i've done so and
the battery monitor icon changes. If i boot into f13, also kde, i get
no indication at all when i pull out the cable. The home directory is
shared between the two boots, so the configuration is the same.
I think this was working for f13 too until the last time i applied
updates, though it may just be that i didn't test it.
Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone suggest how I can debug it?
Thanks,
Chris
