User space governor for Athlon64

Running F13 32 bit. There are these frequency apps: /usr/bin/cpufreq-aperf /usr/bin/cpufreq-info /usr/bin/cpufreq-selector /usr/bin/cpufreq-set It seems they either require a user space governor, or o support is availbale. To wit: $ sudo /usr/bin/cpufreq-selector No cpufreq support $ lsmod | egrep 'freq|power' cpufreq_ondemand 7826 0 $ sudo /usr/bin/cpufreq-set -f 2200 Error setting new values. Common errors: - Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?) - Is the governor you requested available and modprobed? - Trying to set an invalid policy? - Trying to set a specific frequency, but userspace governor is not available, for example because of hardware which cannot be set to a specific frequency or because the userspace governor isn't loaded? So, I searched the kernel for the governor module, but found none. $find /lib/modules/`uname -r` -name \*gov\* $ It comes up empty I configured and built the kernel with CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y The documentation says: 2. Governors In the Linux Kernel ================================ 2.1 Performance --------------- The CPUfreq governor "performance" sets the CPU statically to the highest frequency within the borders of scaling_min_freq and scaling_max_freq. However, I do not find the module cpufreq_performance.ko in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/....etc Also, I am unable to set the min or the max frequency. To wit: $ sudo /usr/bin/cpufreq-set -d 2200MHz -u 2200MHz wrong, unknown or unhandled CPU? <<< man page says default is 0 Error setting new values. The values I set are in megaherz but perhaps they need to be in gigaherts??? So, I tried to specify the cpu as 0: $ sudo /usr/bin/cpufreq-set -c 0 -d 2200MHz -u 2200MHz wrong, unknown or unhandled CPU? Error setting new values. kernel update breaks virtualbox

Dear Fedorians, I'm a new user of fedora 13 and I use a virtualbox installation on it. Unfortunately the last two kernel upgrades (2.6.34.6-54 and 2.6.34.7-56) didn't correspond to an upgrade of the kernel modules necessary by virtualbox (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, and vboxnetadp); this impedes the normal behavior of virtualbox. Otherwise, rpmfusion folks can just recompile the module against new kernel and push it as an update. The same thing happens to closed source nVidia drivers. But my experience is that both open and closed source ATI drivers tend to break quite often, compared to nVidia and Intel. That makes every ATI graphics card unreliable from a user's perspective, and it is often a gamble whether the latest drivers will work with any particular model or not. And fuurthermore, when something doesn't work with the open source nouveau driver, the devs have a good excuse since they need to RE it. But when something doesn't work with the open source radeon driver, the devs have no such excuse, since all specs are (supposedly) available. Or otherwise ATI is lying to its Linux customers. :-) Marko

For all issues with the catalyst driver you should contact ATI (and good luck with that). It's closed source, they are the only ones who know how to fix it. For all issues with the free radeon driver create a bugzilla entry. It's open source, but only the initiated are capable of fixing it (after they break it). Testing disk I/O?

I know about the smart tools, but they run disk tests pretty much entirely within the disk drive (I think?). Is there a good tool for testing the whole disk I/O system that will wind up exercising the disk, the controller/chipset, etc? (Hopefully available in the fedora repos). I have a feeling something is going funny in the head on my system and the smart disk tests report all OK (as does a few passes of memtest86+). I want to get the motherboard into the mix now.

Problem with CVE-2010-3081 vulnerability

There seems to be a problem with kernels on all distros that are 64 bit http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/security-threats/2010/09/21/linux-kernel-exploi… Read this article and run ksplice to check for the problem. There is a patch but it seems after you run patch the 32 bit software on a 64 bit machine will not function any more. Michael
