Making Fedora boot faster

Hi all, I thought to make my Fedora system boot faster. For that I thought to disable unnecessary kernel modules and services. So I want to know in detail what each and every kernel module and service do so that I can disable which are no needed. problems with gigabit speeds on dual network card

Anyone got any suggestions for this. I have a linksys sr2024 Gb switch Several things are plugged into this - all using cat 5e or cat 6 cables. Some things are connecting with full Gb speed but the main firewall wont. The machine has 3 intel nic's - lspci | egrep -i ethernet 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 01) 05:04.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82541PI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 05) 05:05.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82541PI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 05) The 82573 is on board and not used - the other 2 nic's are used - one for internal subnet and one for external. The internet side is connected to a cisco 800 router (which I believe is 10/100 only .. tho I cudnt swear for sure) The inside is connected to the SR2024 Gb switch. Both nic's come up in 100 Mb/s - I rebooted the switch, and I plugged and unplugged the cables, I tried ethtool -r ethx a few times to no avail. Other machines on same switch are happily running at full gigabit speeds. Nothing in logs suggests a problem Is there a problem with multi nics of same brand where they need to run at diff speeds ? Or is this a quirk with some hardware somewhere ? Or ??? Appreciate any suggesions ... its getting tiring forcing renogiation! thanks ... gene/

yum localinstall worked like a champ. I was looking in the wrong place trying to find the answer in rpm. Yes, I am posting from my XP platform as I am trying to bring the new laptop up to speed on Fedora and have not configured Thunderbird on it yet. Thanks for the help!

generating PDF's via code - looking for ideas

Hi All; I'm looking for a way to generate a PDF report based on a set of data in a database and a set of pre-generated graphs via some sort of procedural method based on a template. We tried to do this via open office & it's templating features but this process requires us to first generate an odt file based on xml and then open the open office odt file and export to a PDF, unfortunately our first stab generated a 150GB odt file. This is of course an unacceptable method. So, I'm looking for a way to generate PDF's straight away as described above. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance

Suspend/sleep

Months ago when I started using Fedora 13 from Centos 5.3 one of the reasons was that things just worked. Things like suspend when the laptop lid is closed. Lately starting perhaps six weeks ago the probability of a successful suspension and subsequent wake up seems to be about 50%-60%. My question is what can I check to gather evidence about what's going on and how to fix it? uname -r: 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.x86_64 Machine: Lenovo X200 Thinkpad. TIA, Roger Wells, P.E. Test GIMP 2.7/2.8 ?

I there a way to test new GIMP 2.7/2.8 in Fedora? I looked in Rawhide repos and I still see only 2.6x versions there. Fedora SMP and 12 core cpu's

I was browsing for info on 12 core cpu's and found that AMD released them or announced back in March. The price is steep of course. What I would like to know is the degree of granularity of the SMP implementation in Linux. Does anyone have an inside track on that? Or point to some internal documentation?

help - can't boot 2.6.34

Hi all, My HP DC7800 with encrypted Intel SSD can boot: kernel-2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64 but not the 2.6.34 kernels like: kernel-2.6.34.6-54.fc13.x86_64 The screen goes blank very early in the boot process, before the disk passphrase is requested. It happens so fast that I can't read the limited text that appears on the screen, and the disks are not mounted for logging... Anyway... maybe this rings a bell for someone? Removing and re-installing the 2.6.34 kernel doesn't fix anything. - Mike

Fedora Core RPMs archive

Hello, Is there a site somewhere having a comprehensive archive of all Fedora release (RPMs, iso, etc.) that can be rsynced ? archive.fedoraproject.org seems to have everything but I'm not sure it can be rsynced ... disable desktop background in fedora 13 (LXDE)

Hi, I was wondering how one does it: I have been looking at the Preferences -> Desktop but I can not find a way to have it take nothing as the background. Previously, in F10,11,12, I recall that there was a button somewhere which said no background. I can not find it here. Any help? Many thanks! Ranjan
