Soundblaster

I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine) In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster is working fine In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig... Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but fine on a router/firewall. Tnx Antonio

What happened to floppy drive support?

I've been using a floppy boot disk as reserve if my HD boot fails, But it appears floppy support as now been removed. Why? Then how can I create an emergency media that is flexible enough to be updated as required? JB

Question on shredding a terebyte drive

I have a terebyte sata drive that I need to securely wipe clean. It originally had 2 partitions. I deleted them using `fdisk', rebooted, and then as root ran shred -vz /dev/sdd The drive is capable of about 60MB/sec, but shred is only "shredding" about 25MB every 5 seconds according to its output. Since the default number of passes is 25, this works out to about 5 days. The `shred' process is running at 100% CPU, presumably computing the special random patterns for erasure. Since I have 4 CPUs would creating 4 unformatted partions on the drive and then running something like: shred -vz /dev/sdd1 shred -vz /dev/sdd2 shred -vz /dev/sdd3 shred -vz /dev/sdd4 in parallel cut my time? Would be just as secure? Thanks Dean

Alpine will not show attachments

Hi, I am running alpine-2.00-1.fc10.x86_64 on an F10 box. If I get a message with an html or file attachment and I try to open it, I get an error that "Firefox can't find the file at /tmp/img--46112.htm" The correct program opens up but I always get the can't find file errors. If the message contains a URL then it comes up and displays properly. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem? native texlive and yum

Dear Fedora Experts, bored of the several problems of the texlive 2010 distribution for fedora (see my previous message about the missed hyphenation and the 1-month old broken dependency on the latex binary) I have decides to remove it and reinstall it through tlmgr. That has been a great idea except for a couple of issues on some *nonrelated" packages. To remove texlive yum forced the remotion of a2ps and R-core (and few other but these are the most important for me) and I can't reinstall them without reinstalling texlive (at least in part). Now I've already installed texlive but not through yum and I'm wondering why the rpm for these packages not really related to LaTeX and in any case working also without LaTeX can't check for the bins instead of the whole package. Is there a way for forcing their installation without installing texlive? dell e6500 lost fn-f8 key with 2.6.32 kernels

In the 2.6.32 kernels, I've seemed to have lost the ability to use the fn-f8 key to togle external displays. Using xev I see that KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x5800001, root 0x15a, subw 0x5800002, time 869383, (55,45), root:(93,132), state 0x50, keycode 33 (keysym 0x70, p), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p" XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p" XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x5800001, root 0x15a, subw 0x5800002, time 869531, (55,45), root:(93,132), state 0x50, keycode 33 (keysym 0x70, p), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p" XFilterEvent returns: False This works just fine with the 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64, but not with any of the 2.6.32 kernels. Running Blender 2.56 on Fedora 13 and 14

Hi galls and guys, I saw that there are no up to date instuctions for getting Blender 2.56 running on Fedora, not even on Blender wiki so I wrote up this blog post: http://bit.ly/gLQgFS or long version: http://kernelreloaded.blog385.com/index.php/archives/blender-2-56-on-fedora… I would like to ask you to try out these instructions and post any feedback that you have, especially if there are some errors in instructions. Also if there are some Blender artists in Fedora design team please test if all Blender functions work correctly. I saw some Blender 2.56 packages in Koji for F15, does anybody know if Blender 2.56 will ship with Fedora 15? I talked with few Blender artists that I know and asked them which version of Blender they used. They all replied that they used 2.56 and not 2.49. They all claim that Blender 2.56 is rock solid on both OSX and Windows, I don't know Blender artists that use Linux :( So if Blender 2.56 turns out to be stable could it be made to replace aging 2.45 in Fedora 14 and 15? Skype - No sound from microphone

I have an issue with Skype . Although am able to hear sounds ( in a call i can hear the caller ) the caller can´t hear me . System wide i have sounds. The version of Skype am using is : skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586 Now the odd thing is that if i go to PulseAudio Volume Control under Multimedia under the Recording devices i can "see" the microphone and the system can hear me speaking since the volume increases and decreases accordingly . Theoretically at least that should mean that the microphone is actually being detected and the proper modules have been loaded. One last thing that might be relevant is that i don´t actually own a seperate microphone but it´s build in my Logitech Web Camera. The thing is that Skype actually knows about the Web Camera since if i test it under the video controls i can see my face . If i make the sound tests i can hear the sound if i make the test call i can hear the test person speaking but i can´t hear my voice . I have looked in the net but i don´t want to mess anything else , since everywhere else the sound is working ( admitted it´s the playback sound and not the recording thing that am hearing ) . I would be glad to try even any other application that speaks the Skype protocol if that thing would make things easier without messing up anything .
