Constructing Grid on Fedora
by Abu Attar Musharih
Dear List,
I have a cluster of several PCs, each is running Fedora, either 14 or 15.
I want to make this PCs grid enabled, so I installed globus (
http://www.globus.org/ ) and made a server with a global IP and with
a subdomain. My main objective is to be able to run parallel
programming (mpi), harnessing the idle CPUs of onlines nodes.
The stage at a moment, I have successfully set up simple-CA and the
GSI of the server.
Globus commands works fine, for example:
++++
$ globus-hostname-lookup fedora.org
Resolving address (fedora.org)...
-------------------------------
Numeric address: 67.40.49.xxx
Expected DN suffix: /CN=host/hoxx.trippy.org
++++
$ grid-proxy-init
Your identity: /O=Grid/OU=GlobusTest/OU=simpleCA-localhost.localdomain/OU=localdomain/CN=
Abu Attar
Enter GRID pass phrase for this identity:
Creating proxy ............................................ Done
Your proxy is valid until: Wed Nov 2 05:01:04 2011
++++++
I tried but failed to copy a file from one node to a server.
$ globus-url-copy file:///home/username/Grid/Codes/cpi.c gsiftp://domainname/
The message is as follows,
error: globus_xio: Unable to connect to domainname:2811
globus_xio: System error in connect: No route to host
globus_xio: A system call failed: No route to host
It seems something to do with the port 2811. Checking /etc/services
of the server gave the port number and the protocol
++++
root$ less /etc/services | grep gsi
gsigatekeeper 2119/udp # GSIGATEKEEPER
gsiftp 2811/tcp # GSI FTP
gsiftp 2811/udp # GSI FTP
gsidcap 22128/tcp # GSI dCache Access Protocol
++++
As I do not have any experience, I have no idea how to fix it.
I mainly rely on internet searching, but still can not find the answer.
I expect from this list some suggestions or any comment.
Thank you very much in advance.
with best,
AA

SL6 to F16??
by Beartooth
I've been playing with Scientific Linux on an oldish machine, and
now I want to try F16 with xfce -- *not* live, but installed, with
the .iso on a DVD. I realize that requires me to install the gnome
version and then add xfce. Do I just command "yum install xfce," or is
there something more esoteric?
In the course of playing with SL, I've put spare copies of
various data into it, and of course tweaked all sorts of things, many of
them a tad bit tedious; I'd like to preserve them into the F16 install.
Is there a way Fedora can treat SL6 as if I were upgrading
earlier Fedora install? I see this :
$ uname -a
Linux Hbsk.localdomain 2.6.32-131.17.1.el6.i686 #1 SMP Wed Oct 5 17:20:08
CDT 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
There's plenty of space for dual-booting. I suppose I could
install into free space, boot to it, mount the SL partition, and copy
stuff. But that sounds like needless hassle to me, even if I got all of
it right.
Is there another way??

TV Tuner cards?
by Alex
Hi,
I'm interested in a TV tuner card that I can connect to my roof
antenna with a RG6 coax, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions?
I've used the Happauge cards in the past, but that was quite some time
ago. I've found the linuxtv.org page, and although they have a list of
available TV tuners, they don't really give any impression on which
have the best features, etc.
I'd probably also like to set up MythTV at some point.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Alex

localhost udp bind: address in use
by Michael D. Berger
I have some complex multi-thread C++ code in which I do
some internal signaling with udp sockets:
snd: 127.0.0.1:6501
rcv: 127.0.0.1:6502
On my new F15_64 box, I usually get:
errno=98=Address already in use
in response to the bind command when I bring up the snd
socket (which is first up) even when I just come up from
power off.
Rarely, it works. I have no idea why.
If I ignore the 98 error, I get a write error on the socket.
Even when it fails,
netstat -uap
shows the socket, which is not a surprise, and it
is not there when the program is not up.
Now on my old CentOS 5_32 box, the same code
(but, of course, compiled for 32) works with no
problem. I can start and stop it rapidly with no
problem.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Mike.

Drawer in xfce?
by Beartooth
I'm running xfce on an expendable laptop (under F16, in case that
matters) which can also boot into gnome. How do I add a drawer or three
to a panel?

pppd over ssl worked until dreytek ADSL / broadband added to the mix
by Gary Stainburn
Hi folks.
I've set up another Fedora box as a VPN gateway. Working locally on the LAN
everything worked fine. However, I've just installed it now at a remote site
using that site's Dreytek Vigor ADSL router over a BT broadband and now I
have a problem with the pppd connection constantly dropping / raising.
The pppd link is raised using the following:
/usr/sbin/pppd updetach noauth passive \
pty "ssh $HOST -P -o Batchmode=yes /usr/sbin/pppd nodetach notty noauth" \
$LocIP:$RemIP
Which worked before and still does. However, as the /var/log/messages extract
shows, there is definitely a problem.
Can anyone suggest what I need to do to fix it.
Gary
