"Printers" vs. "Printing"...?
by Christopher A Williams
There's some real confusion I've noticed in F16 (also present in F15)
regarding printer setup. In the System Settings applet, there is a
section on printers which includes the ability to add printers.
...Except that applet is completely and total incapable of adding any
kind of network printer. It complains about FirewallD not running, and
several other other settings missing. If you install FirewallD, things
on F16 x64 totally break. I almost destroyed 2 different machines
yesterday because of this stupid applet.
Then there is the other "Printing" application, aka the old, tried and
true "system-config-printer" application. It's much better hidden and
not well placed (the "Other" category - really??? shouldn't this be in
"System Tools") except that you have to know it's there. This
application DOES work to let you set up both local and network printers.
It also notices several (of the same) settings not properly set, but
then offers to "fix" this for you. One mouse-click and it's done.
So why is it that the one which DOESN'T work made to be easier to find,
and to potentially screw up the machine, than the one that does work?
And why are both still there? Isn't this what we would call a usability
disaster? No...?

getting the nologin users out of the login dialog
by Joel Rees
Okay, one question at a time, even though I'm pretty sure it's just
two faces of the same problem.
In fedora14 users whose login shell (in /etc/passwd) is specified as
/sbin/nologin do not show up in the login dialog. In Fedora15, they
do.
Does any one know of a setting to fix this?
I read in the man pages for xdm about /etc/shell, but /sbin/nologin,
for all that it seems to me it should not be in there, has been in
there since before fedora13. I tried taking it out anyway, but that
didn't fix anything. Not seeing anything else in the configuration
options that addresses this.

Gnome3 - Forced Fallback Mode
by Michael D. Setzer II
I've been running Fedora 9 thru 14 in my lab over the years, but
these issues have me stumped.
Gnome3 works fine on some of my systems, but unfortunately my
classrooms machines with Nvidia Geoforce FX 5200 cards it only
works about 80%.
I've tired using gnome-tweak-tool, gconf-editor, and dconf-editor,
but have failed to find a solution that completely works.
gnome-tweak-tool comes the closest with using the Font option
and then changing the Text scaling factor to something else and
then back to 1.0. This will fix the text on the top panel/bar and the
gnome3 application list will show the text correctly in the far right
panel, but it does not stay set after a logout and requires manually
doing it after the next sign in.
Tried using strace to send the output to a file, but in just making
that one change it produced ofter 200,000 lines of output. Lots of
gettimeofday lines and others that I was able to filter out, but still
left me with 10,000 lines that did seem to have anything obvious
that might be a way to automate this process.
The gconf-editor and dconf-editor had lots of options, but none
seemed to be what I was looking for. There was a scaling factor,
but it didn't make the process work.
Setting the Forced Fallback mode does get it working with the old
menu style, but loses the gnome3, which seems to work mostly?
But this still leaves the sign on screen with issues.
Then Sign in screen has the top panel/bar with what looks like
light and dark brown lines going across the screen. The date/time
is all bunched up in the center and most characters are
unreadable. The 3 icons on the right are also messed up, but
mousing over them gets them to display properly while over them.
Click on the date/time displays the calander, but only parts of it
displays correctly. What should be Saturday December 31, 2011
shows up with urd y December , 20 . With the missing
charcters as blurred versions. The calendar below shows all the
text and numbers fine. In the Sign in Panel itself the Fedora Icon
shows up again as a number of brown lines at the moment, but it
sometimes has different colores, and sometines blocks of various
colors rather and the image. One time it did show the image
correctly, and the names were showing up in the older style, but
then a restart went back to the gnome3 style.

Desktop "stickiness" under Fedora-16/KDE
by Timothy Murphy
My desktop siezes up every hour or so;
I can continue in the current desktop,
but cannot change to another desktop
or go to another application by clicking on an icon in the panel.
The problem cures itself in 20-30 seconds,
so it is not life-threatening.
I killall-ed upowerd, but that didn't do the trick.
There is nothing untoward in /var/log/messages.
The problem could be to do with Firefox or KDE or Fedora;
I'm not sure which.
I've seen a few comments on this,
but has anyone found a cure?

rEFIt and fedora 16 install
by Matt Morgan
I've installed f16 on a macbook pro and understand that I might be able to
get it to boot if I run gptsync from a rEFIt disc. But I cannot eject the
install disc in order to burn the rEFIt disc. I found the eject menu but it
doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Matt
