USB 3.0 support, and results.

For future information searches..... Bought a USB 3.0 external 2.5 inch hard drive the other day (WD 500GB 'My Passport Essential'), and bought a Goe (Generic off-eBay) ExpressCard USB 3.0 controller (generic NEC xHCI), and have now had opportunity to set up and test. The first thing, of course, was to re-enable USB 3.0 (xHCI) functionality; found that on the F14 bugs page ( http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F14_bugs#USB_3.0_ports_not_working ). Once that was done, the WD drive came up fine, and at SuperSpeed. (I can see it now: USB 6.0, with LudicrousSpeed!) Sorry, I digress. Anyway, I reformatted the drive (after copying the WD software off of it) as ext4, which was quite fast for a 500GB drive. Palimpsest (Disk Utility) tells me that it's connected at 705.0MB/s. How nice. Read preformance is essentially what I would expect of a SATA or eSATA 2.5 inch laptop drive in the low-power category, with read performance, according to hdparm, clocking at roughly 50MB/s. That's slower than the internal drive, a decidedly non-low-power Seagate 7200RPM 500GB 2.5 inch Momentus SATA-II drive, which clocks in at 93.5MB/s (hdparm -t, of course, take it with a grain of salt), but faster than the Seagate 320GB USB2 external, which manages 28.24MB/s, not bad for USB2. As the main purpose of the drive is for backups, I rsync'd my home directory over to it: roughtly 246GB of data in 2 hours and 8 minutes. Not bad at all, and less than half of the time it would have taken on the USB2 drive. Now I'm on the prowl for a USB3 version of my Thermaltake blaX drive doc.....and there are plenty of other brands out there, as I see with a quick look at eBay. I do note, however, that transfers use more CPU than transfers with eSATA to the Thermaltake's eSATA port, and so that's definitely a consideration. But the USB3 drive doesn't need a second wire for power, and the equivalent eSATA (not eSATAp) enclosures, like the Rocketfish units I've been using.

Trying to install Fedora 14 on a Stubborn Sony Vaio

A Sony Vaio will not let me boot on cdrom with a Crashed Windows OS, trying to install Fedora only on laptop. Even if I have BIOS set to boot off Cdrom. I even hooked a external cdrom to usb and enabled in Bios to be first boot device, won't work, in all cases it will only Attempt to Load Windows. It won't even let you disable hard drive in Boot process.

fedora CIDOC-DRM and FOAF

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had success in using Fedora and CIDOC-CRM or FOAF. I have RDF files using both these ontologies, but I am having trouble ingesting them in Fedora so that the relationships show up as triples. I have been successful in forming RDF triples using Fedora's RDF ontology, but not using CIDOC or FOAF. I'm not sure in which datastreams the RDF should occur and in what format. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Shannon

yum erase the best way to do reverse dependency checking?

I was googling for a way to figure out a dependency chain for a package I'm trying to flush out a spec file for and build. There doesn't seem to be a non-destructive equivalent to "yum erase <package>" to see if I need to explicitly include a package/program. Anyone have a solution they like? Thanks, Richard

Video editor

Is there a video editor which can easily snip bits from several files and write them to another? We have video of a kids football game taken with multiple cameras, and would like to quickly combine the pictures in chronological sequence, show the long shot first and then add a zoomed shot as an "instant replay" and such. I have ugly and slow methods involving ffmpeg, vlc, and swearing, there must be a nice GUI to do stuff like this. internet intermittent very long message

Hi, everyone, I am experiencing internet intermittency. The same computer booted under windows performs very well, but when running Fedora 14 is very poor. Videos will only partially load, email (evolution) gives "error downloading mail", photos and graphics will be interrupted before they complete, etc. etc. tcpdump shows groups of ARP requests about 1 group per second requesting the users on my network respond in idle (only tcpdump accessing the network with possibly nntp.) and that's it. I have cleared out the various directories where cookies, temp files, flash stuff and some downloads are saved, Checked the internet connections by replacing the cable (not really expecting this to change anything since windows works), and checked various settings according to AT&T (who do not support linux at all) and looked on line at various suggestions, all to no gain. Basically I don't know what to look at next, and googling has not returned much in the way of help. Mostly a thread about memcpy, which may or may not apply. Regards, Les H
