Soundblaster

I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine) In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster is working fine In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig... Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but fine on a router/firewall. Tnx Antonio

What happened to floppy drive support?

I've been using a floppy boot disk as reserve if my HD boot fails, But it appears floppy support as now been removed. Why? Then how can I create an emergency media that is flexible enough to be updated as required? JB

Dear List, I was asked to assist connecting a Fedora linux system for video conferencing with oovoo.com. It is apparent that they support Mac and Windows. Does anyone have any experience in using the Mac installation for oovoo for Fedora? Can anyone make recommendations for connections that allow video conferencing with Fedora. Question on shredding a terebyte drive

I have a terebyte sata drive that I need to securely wipe clean. It originally had 2 partitions. I deleted them using `fdisk', rebooted, and then as root ran shred -vz /dev/sdd The drive is capable of about 60MB/sec, but shred is only "shredding" about 25MB every 5 seconds according to its output. Since the default number of passes is 25, this works out to about 5 days. The `shred' process is running at 100% CPU, presumably computing the special random patterns for erasure. Since I have 4 CPUs would creating 4 unformatted partions on the drive and then running something like: shred -vz /dev/sdd1 shred -vz /dev/sdd2 shred -vz /dev/sdd3 shred -vz /dev/sdd4 in parallel cut my time? Would be just as secure? Thanks Dean

Dear users members, I would like to use a wireless adaptor DWL G122 witha desktop machine (Intel (R) Pentium (R) D CPU 3.00 Ghz with memory 1001 MiB. Kernel 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686. GNOME 2.32.0 I have tried Ralink r-2571w/rt2671 A B G network (rt73usb firmware adaptors with no results. Any help is welcome. X server in F14 horribly slow

After upgrading to F14, switching from one workspace to another is excruciatingly slow!! I am a gnome user. Can this be attributed to Gnome or to the X server or to the ATI Radeon driver?

Boot loader after upgrade

Hi, I upgraded my fedora 12 to 13 and then F13 to F14. I used the instructions for the desktop version in these two pages: http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-upgrade-from-fedora-12-to-fedora-13-deskto… http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-upgrade-from-fedora-13-to-fedora-14-deskto… Which are basically the same for both upgrades. Now in the boot loader I have 3 choices: F14, F13 and Other which is windoze. I can boot from both F13 and F14, they work properly. F13 desktop is the same know as F14 but when I check the version in terminal (uname -a), I get F13. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Is there anyway to keep only F14 and get rid of F13? Thank you

Alpine will not show attachments

Hi, I am running alpine-2.00-1.fc10.x86_64 on an F10 box. If I get a message with an html or file attachment and I try to open it, I get an error that "Firefox can't find the file at /tmp/img--46112.htm" The correct program opens up but I always get the can't find file errors. If the message contains a URL then it comes up and displays properly. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem? Can't dual-boot Fedora 14 on new MacBook Pro?

Hello, I'm trying to install Fedora (dual-boot) on a brand-new MacBook Pro. The live/installer CD runs flawlessly on the machine, which was a nice surprise. But after the install is completed, I cannot actually boot into Fedora. Here is what I did: 1. OS X by default ships with an EFI partition (/dev/sda1) and an HFS+ partition (/dev/sda2). I used Boot Camp in OS X to resize the existing OS X partition and reboot to the live CD. 2. Once the Fedora live CD is booted, I used the disk utility to delete the "Windows" partition (/dev/sda3) that Boot Camp created. This leaves the original EFI and OS X partitions plus a chunk (40G) of empty space at the end of the disk. 3. Run the Fedora Installer, telling it to automatically partition and install using the free space on the disk. It creates a 500M boot partition (/dev/sda3) and an LVM partition (/dev/sda4). 4. When the installer gets to the part about the boot loader, I go with the defaults, which is to install GRUB to the boot sector of the Fedora boot partition (/dev/sda3). After the install is complete, I would expect to be able to hold down the Mac's "Option" key to choose which OS to boot since /dev/sda3 has a boot sector, but only the OS X disk shows up. (What does Boot Camp do, then, besides resizing the disk?) I read somewhere that a boot loader called rEFIt would help, so I tried that. I installed it using the instructions on the project's website and rebooted. An option to boot Linux shows up in the rEFIt boot screen, but when selecting it, I get a black screen with an error message along the lines of "no operating system found." Further research suggested that rEFIt had to "resync" in order to find GRUB, even though I installed rEFIt after Fedora. I did that by going into the rEFIt "menu" and answering in the affirmative when it told me that a resync was necessary. Now, when I select Linux in the rEFIt boot menu, it only shows a gray-out penguin and nothing else happens. The lack of output makes the problem difficult to troubleshoot exactly what's going wrong. Maybe if I knew more about EFI, I could play around in the EFI shell provided by rEFIt. Anyway, has anyone here had success dual-booting Fedora 14 on a newer Mac, and if so, what procedure did you use? I'd like to install Fedora to the whole disk, but I'm reluctant to try that until I can get a dual-boot scenario to work.
