tty rows colums

I use gnome environment . The xterm has 80 columns and 24 rows While I enter Ctrl+Alt+F2 to use a whole scream for some edits. This tty has 180 columns and 56 rows. How can I resize it to 80 columns and 24 rows. Early I use some skills in grub , it works . Is there another way?

How to change screen resolution

Dear Experts, My machine is using Fedora. The current resolution display is 1024x768_60Hz and it shows flickerring every now and then. I know that the max screen resolution can handle is 1280x1024_60Hz but I cant change it by simply go to display preference. Under the display preferences the max resolution option is 1024x768 which is currently use. At the back of the machine, the display output is DVI port but then the installation here is converted to VGA port (via DVI to VGA adapter) and from the VGA port comes to a VGA splitter then connected to 3 monitors. Yesterday I did try to modify the xorg.conf file as following (the one that I added is on the red) Section "Monitor" (mon "0") ... ... Modeline "1280x1024_60" Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_60" Section "Screen" ... ... Modes "1280x1024_60" >From the above list, the first modification that I enter on the xorg.conf file was the Option under the "Monitor" section and the Modes under the "Screen" section. After I rebooted, the resolution was not changing. It still doing the same. Then After I added the "Modeline" and did reboot. The system was hung up at the fedora symbol. I managed to restore back the original xorg.conf by went to the single user mode. It's now up and running again with the original resolution 1024x768 and it still flickering. Do I enter a wrong format under the Modeline? Or is there any other way to set the resolution up to max in fedora? Please kindly help, Triadi

Is it true, that using the [2] method is safer? Why do i think this? - The gnome-screensaver is just a "process", it could be killed. But if you use the log out/switch user function, it's "something else". Using the "switch user" function, could there be a problem like with the gnome-screensaver? Could someone "kill a process" and presto...the lock is removed? Could the GDM [??] "login windows process" [e.g.: http://www.labtestproject.com/files/screenshot/fedora12/042_fedora12_kde_lo…] get killed and the "lock" gets owned? Thank you for any opinion! p.s.: if the [2] method is safer, then how can i put an icon on the GNOME panel, to launch the "switch user" action by 1 click?

fc14 upgrade fails, system now in partially-upgraded state...

Hi, I started an upgrade from fc13 x86_64 to fc14 x86_64, and the computer locked up during the install. I thought the problem with the PC was that it was locking up due to insufficient memory. I've added more memory, but now the upgrade won't complete. When rebooting to the fc14 upgrade kernel, it says it can't find the install image, so I booted into the fc13 kernel, and started the yum upgrade method. During that process, it fails with the following: --> Processing Dependency: /usr/bin/update-gdk-pixbuf-loaders for package: libwmf-0.2.8.4-22.fc13.x86_64 --> Finished Dependency Resolution Skip-broken could not solve problems Error: Package: libwmf-0.2.8.4-22.fc13.x86_64 (@updates/13) Requires: /usr/bin/update-gdk-pixbuf-loaders Removing: gtk2-2.20.1-1.fc13.i686 (@fedora/13) Not found Updated By: gtk2-2.22.0-1.fc14.1.i686 (fedora) Not found ** Found 267 pre-existing rpmdb problem(s), 'yum check' output follows: GraphicsMagick-1.3.12-2.fc14.x86_64 is a duplicate with GraphicsMagick-1.3.12-1.fc13.x86_64 followed by hundreds of other duplicates... The command I ran was: # yum --releasever=14 distro-sync --skip-broken I've tried clearing the yum cache, various package-cleanup options, and it still fails. Running "package-cleanup --cleandupes", but it says: Error: Trying to remove "yum", which is protected You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem I think it basically tries to remove every package on the system, because it lists thousands of packages. I also tried to install from a local DVD, but it fails with a "debug" "save" "exit" error that it can't install some package, I think. Perhaps the same one as shown above. How can I pick up where it left off, or delete what's been done already, or restart and force the install of fc14 packages that are already installed? Thanks, Alex '

Any Fedora that would run SANE/SSHD on an ancient 486sx with 8MB RAM?

I wonder if there's any Fedora (1.0? :) that would run on a 486sx-33 system with 8MB of RAM. I don't need a GUI. My intent is to connect an ancient SCSI based scanner through a PCMCIA SCSI interface, and run SANE on it. Perhaps invoking SANE over SSH... from a modern system... Or maybe I'd need to look at another distro with current kernel that still supports ISA-PCMCIA? (DSL?) Thanks in advance... FC

Ideas for securing OpenVPN on an OpenWrt router

ok, i putted an OpenVPN server on port 1194 on an OpenWrt 10.03 router. https://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=xEZTvnhT http://pastebin.mozilla.org/1138443 Questions: what could i do to increase security regarding this OpenVPN server? - i mean on server side! 1 - i sed 's/1194/50000/' the port number to a higher one - it's against the automated robots, ok! 2 - iptables? i should only allow ip ranges [on the input chain] that i will use in reality? - ok! 3 - if i don't use my router - e.g.: when i'm sleeping i just turn it off. 4 - ? what else?? Plese write down you're idea/solution!!! OpenWrt isn't OpenBSD, so from the "ps" command i can see that the OpenVPN is runned by root. it's not so secure. How can i make it more secure?

Speeding up boot time?

Hi all, Has anyone got any tips for decreasing boot time? I've done the usual things, such as disable (what I think are) unnecessary services for a desktop, but are there any other tips? These are the services I'm disabling, please tell me if you think any of those are a stupid choice: capi, iscsi, iscsid, isdn, netfs, network, nfs, nfslock, pcscd, rpcbind, rpcgssd, rpcidmapd, rpcsvcgssd, sendmail There used to be a cheat's way of allowing an early login, I think it was gdm-early-login, but it doesn't seem to exist any more (and that's probably a bad idea anyway).
