Installing Fedora on a Fedora machine

As a matter of interest, are there "official" instructions anywhere for installing a new version of Fedora on a spare partition of a machine already running Fedora, after downloading the DVD ISO to the machine?

smartd reporting disk failing

I purchased a 1Tb Seagate Go drive a few months ago. It's formatted as NTFS. Today I started getting reports from smartd that the disk is failing. Specifically it's telling me that there are many bad sectors. There are no messages in /var/log/messages indicating any failures. Why is smartd claiming the disk is bad? This is the second drive (also a Seagate Go) that I get reports that the drive is failing less than a year after buying the drive. I can't believe that a drive would go bad after a few months use. I have other Seagate drives that have been in use for years without any issues. The problem seems to be specific to drives that are powered via USB. Any assistance in the matter is appreciated. Keyboard doesn't work in GDM

Anyone else ever seen this? My computer got restarted (presumable by my 3 y.o. daughter) and now all of a sudden my keyboard doesn't work in GDM. Works fine in the BIOS, plymouth, it will even wake up the monitor when it goes to sleep, but when GDM comes up I can't do anything. Not even numlock. For the time being I have been booting up to run level 3, logging in, and starting x manually. Everything works that way. I didn't see anything suspicious updates in the yum log so I'm at a loss. Please help me installing RT3070STA

I asked about errors installing fedora(H67,i5-2300,GT240,SATA3 500Gbps, remember?) But after I changed the port, it worked successfully. And this is software problem. I use wireless internet and I tried to install the driver. The chipset of it is RT3070, so I visited 'http://www.ralinktech.com/' and downloaded the driver, and I unpacked the compress file(the file ended with 'bz2' but the real format was 'gzip'). Logged in root and after I edited the settings, I did 'make' and 'make install' in terminal. Certainly, there was no error, but some warnings about difference between variables. And when I did 'modprobe rt3070sta', there was an error - 'Unknown symbols in module' and 'see dmesg'. f15, pulseaudio, line-in, volume control

Hi all, I've installed f15 from the livecd and am exploring this new beast. I should also state I'm using Gnome3. One of the things about pulseaudio that is not intuitive is how to control the line-input. By default it is not connected and requires command line instructions to connect it: pactl load-module module-loopback On f14 this added a microphone icon (another volume control) to the taskbar which allowed independent control of its sound level separate from the "master" volume control. On f15 that doesn't happen. The line-input seems to get attached directly to the master channel which destroys the useability of the sound system as a "mixer". In fact, there isn't a mixer application in the "out-of-the-box" install of f15. So I guess this is really two questions: 1) How do I control the line-input volume independent of the master volume level? 2) Is there a sound mixer available for f15? Thanks in advance! Mike Wright

Is it just me or did the upgrade from bash-completion-1.2-5 to 1.3-3 break ls, rm, mv, etc? Now, when tab-completing a directory, the name of the directory completes with a trailing <space> rather than a / (Doc<tab> completes as "Documents " rather than "Documents/").

Reasons for choosing Fedora over Debian

Hello, I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years, and I am increasingly unhappy with it. I dislike the Ubuntu One integration, I think upstart is irritating, and I am sick of my bug reports vegetating forever in Launchpad. Therefore I want to switch distributions, and I have already narrowed it down to either Debian unstable or Fedora (but a release, not rawhide). Unfortunately I have a hard time deciding between the two, because I am very much biased by the fact that I have already used Debian in the past and a lot of experience with it. So I invariably come up with random nice Debian features which then turn out not to exist in Fedora. But on the other hand, all the nice Fedora features that Debian can't offer are unknown to me. Hence, to allow me to make a good decision, I would be very happy to hear about your favorite Fedora feature that I would totally miss if I went with Debian. Just to be clear: I am *not* interested in starting a Debian vs Fedora thread here. So am only asking for your pro-fedora points, so there shouldn't even be the possibility of a flamewar :-). To those who supply Fedora yum install/update sites with Perl rpm pkgs: thank you! I would like to learn how to do this so that I could contribute. I know a little bit about cpan2rpm, I know a little bit about rpm; I'd like to learn more and contribute. Could someone who knows, point me in the right direction?
