How to change from gnome to KDE and back?

Hello, I would like to try KDE But I don't want to reinstall f14. Is there way to switch to KDE and then back to gnome? I did select the KDE also during the installation. at the present time I have gnome running.

hostname issues

hello everyone, i had to add the chosen name for my machine on /etc/hosts manually. That name was chosen during installation. Such problem caused strange bugs on jboss and glassfish, maybe others servers which relies to the name machine to do they business. I want to know if some other person had this problem, and what was the solution, if any other than /etc/hosts edition. Thanks in advance.

how to install glabel

Hello, I downloaded glabel but I was not able to install. ./configure went through OK make: returned "no targets specified end no makefile found there is makefile.am and makefile.in. what am I doing wrong? Vinny.

I agree with those asking to extend F14. Extending support will allow more time to fix F16 to better address the GUI issues with Gnome 3, hopefully. Cheers, -- Wade Hampton

problem with fonts when using root-tail

Greetings, I run into the following error when running root-tail (*) on a Fedora 14 x86_64 system: root-tail -g 800x250+100+50 /var/log/messages,green -font 12x24 /var/log/secure,red,'ALERT' Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion (ISO8859-7) Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion (ISO8859-1) unable to create fontset for font '12x24', exiting. I've already searched online a bit, but didn't find any info as to which other packages I should install, or what else I should read/check to get more info and fix this problem. Question on DNS setup change not working.

Our MIS department just decided to not allow the use of the public IP addresses of system from local machines, so I made the additions to the hosts file with the private ip and the name. restart named and restarted squid, and squid picked up the change, and would bring up pages using the name. Unfortunately, dig and other options would still be using the public IP instead. Tried restarting the machine to see if something might not have been changed, but it remains the same. In the past, I had done this same thing for local services I have. redhatgcc.dyndns.org has a public ip of 202.128.73.24, but on the inside it has the private ip of 192.168.50.41. So, the hosts file has the link between the 192.168.50.41 and the redhatgcc.dyndns.org, and it reports that. But now the college web sever that has a public IP of 202.128.72.2 is now mapped internally to 10.10.10.11, so I added the same mapping but dig still reports the 202.128.72.2 number, and that will no longer work from the inside? Is there something that might be caching the old information even after a system restart? At this point to get it to work, I've had to point to there DNS server that using 172.16.0.4? We've got less than 1000 machine on campus, but they now have 10.x.x.x networks, and 172.16.x networks and a number of 192.168.x networks... +----------------------------------------------------------+ Michael D. Disable "import photos" automagically running whenever I plug a pen drive

What is the official procedure to PERMANTLY DISABLING -without removing it- the autorun of this POS piece of software that automatically starts accesing my pen drive trying to index pictures? I want to stop this, forever. TIA FC

Problem with blacklisting kernel modules with boot parameter

Hi, I was playing with Fedora 16 Alpha and I've got a problem with Kernel 3.x and a camera in my laptop preventing me from installation [1]. The workaround seems to blacklist a uvcvideo kernel module, but because it's an installation process and can't just add module to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf (without a LiveCD customization). I've read about rd.blacklist boot parameter [2] which should work starting with Fedora 12 (as I understand it) [3], but in my case it doesn't. I've tried with rd.blacklist=uvcvideo and blacklist=uvcvideo at boot time, but uvcvideo is still loaded. Is there something else I've missed or this could be a bug in Fedora 16 Alpha? any way to control disk order?

My poor old system died, and I resurrected it by moving the disks to an older system. For who knows what reason, the kernel has decided to call the external USB drive I use for backups /dev/sda (the old system called it /dev/sdc). My internal sata disks are being called /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc. This screws with things like hddtemp where you have to give it args like /dev/sda /dev/sdb. I don't suppose there is any available mechanism for forcefully inducing the kernel to enumerate removable drives last?

These are a few thoughts that have been fermenting in my mind, but I view this email as only a possible set of discussion topics. Anyway, I feel better having said this. I am a long time user of UNIX/Linux distributions: Slackware, RedHat, Fedora, Suse and Ubuntu. I am of the opinion that Linux may be at or close to a crossroad moving from a computing genre in which the users and developers make cooperative decisions on alternative development paths to one in which changes are imposed by developers. In my view this represents A move from an open computing environment to a closed (or more closed) one. For me it is not just that the Gnome2 environment is being replaced with a new version, it is that this new version, Gnome3, was seemingly developed without much consideration of how the former version, Gnome2, was being used and then imposed on users. If I am off base here I am confident that this forum will point out the nature and extent of the perceived errors. I have long hoped for a future in which the UNIX/Linux computing environment would become a more significant player in the desktop world of user currently stuck with Microsoft Windows. But what seems to be happening is that the user interfaces (UI) being developed being developed for the Linux future are trending towards UI in Microsoft Windows. What this seems to imply is that in the future the mainline Linux UI will be characterized features imposed, and by lack of flexibility. This lack of flexibility means that users are presented with a computing environment with features thought desirable by developers and which provide little or no way for users to modify their computing environment in ways that meet their needs and preferences. I suspect without knowing that this is someones idea of how to turn a profit by moving Linux to more profitable place on corporate desktops. I am not directing this criticism solely at the Gnome3 developers or the RedHat role in the Fedora background. One need only look at the Unity desktop with which Canonical is trying to replace its version of the Gnome desktop. It seems to suffer some of the same inflexibility and misfeatures as I see with Gnome3. I say a pox on both these developments. At least in Ubuntu you have the option of selecting the "classical" (Gnome2 or Gnome2 like) desktop on log in. Having started an experiment with Ubuntu on a laptop to see if Windows users might find it more usable than Fedora, I have now converted my laptops to Ubuntu while waiting to see if there is anything left of the flexibility and utility I used to see in the UNIX/Linux UI. If not, I despair. As a footnote: I have observed over my decades using and developing computing environments to replace a manual system or formerly use software which users had used, any number of developed systems that were unused because the people using them were not consulted about the new system. There any number of expensive developments in the Government that have failed because developers failed to consider the actual job to be supported by software. The recent failed (or failing) computing system being developed for the FBI. The beauty of Federal Government computing projects is that their failures make news. I suspect business entities are more successful at concealing the failures. he bottom line is that in he absence of consultation with users s/w developers are not very good at meeting the needs of users As a country is the US becoming incompetent? The aforementioned s/w development failures, NASA sending the Hubble up without checking the collimation of the telescope first, the poor performance of our schools and the failure to produce the scientists and engineers we need now. This does not seem to be an exhaustive list of problems we face. dlg David L.
