gdesklets

Hallo everybody! I have a question concerning gdesklets. I have installed ist and made a nice profile for my desktop. But: Everytime i press the "Show desktop" also the gdesklets disappear. Does someone know how to fix the desklets on the desktop? Version gdesklets: 0.36.3 fedora 15. Thx. Benjamin.

"wireless disabled in software"

WiFi on my Thinkpad T60 has stopped working recently. I'm running Fedora-15/KDE. When I hover over the NetworkManager icon in the panel I read "Disconnected Wireless disabled in software" I'm wondering who gives this message, and what it means? My WiFi card is Intel/PRO 3945ABG The driver seems to be iwl3945. F15 Samba shares: SWAT, smb.conf, system-config or KDE file share properties ? Bug ?

I'm building a NAS server using Samba. Its a mixed OS network. I just spent several hours chasing some really funny bugs. I started out using SWAT in Firefox. I'd make a change in SWAT and commit it. Then I'd view the file. So far so good. Usually the change didn't run like it should have. Ie a share directory didn't get changed, etc. Then I tried system-config-samba. Then I tried using KDE via Dolphin, folder properties, sharing, etc. Then I tried manually editing smb.conf After each attempt I restarted smb and nmb. After a while I realized that the server was running with the settings from several changes ago and that the only way I could be sure that my changes were being used was to reboot after every change. Is there a bug somewhere in here or am I missing something ? Is it ok to mix and match these tools as the need arises or should I be using one over the other ? Thanks

Fedora14: Very very slow NFS write performance

Anyone know why the NFS write performance with Fedora14 may be slow (without async) ? I have Gigabit networking which is all working fine and the systems in question have been running Fedora in various forms for many years. Writing a single large file across NFS is fine, about: 32MBytes/sec without async and 51 MBytes/sec with async. However if I untar a 30MByte tar file that has 2466 files in it into an NFS mounted directory with async it takes about 8 seconds but without async it takes over 9 minutes !! Is this expected ? If not any ideas what is wrong ? Umm?.. thin 1/4" soft copper pipe wrapped around hot things like how a still is made, but not touching anything.. Run a tiny 12 volt pump with plumbing antifreeze in it.. Cool the pump, and a coil of copper near the pump with a small silent case fan.. Be sure to filter the air that touches the fan.. Or use the business parts of a small air conditioner or dehumidifier.. Extreme caution with cooling devices.. Freon is safe in a peaceful environment, but when freon meets flame, it turns the freon into an extremely deadly poison, is why car and house fires are so dangerous.. What if someone built a tower in a cylinder shape..? Properly placed fans might set up a turbo effect for better cooling.. Plus, round towers could be decorated such to be hidden/disguised, or part of a room's décor.. Take a looksee at the bathroom and kitchen fan covers in your home.. Also, heatsinks need to make good physical contact with what they're attached too." _____________ Worded twice as good as I could have.. "perfect!".. Adding to it: There's a LOT more to the "bad-fans syndrome".. If you sweep the rooms while the computer is running, some of that airborne-dust will be sucked into the tower.. Dust in brass fan-bushings causes heat build-up, which bakes the bearing surface, and bakes the dust into abrasive carbon, which is essentially "ultra-fine sandpaper", which wrecks bearings and bushings, which is why corporations spend $millions on clean-rooms for their computers... If the tower is set near a hot air vent, the fans will pull-in heat, and heat what they're supposed to be cooling... You know the CPU fan is failing, and/or plugged with dust, when the OS crashes every hour or so... You really know the CPU's heatsink is seriously dust plugged, when you smell hot dust and overheated electronic components, emitting from the tower... If the tower is set near a cold air vent, the fans will pull-in airborne dust whenever the computer is running... Open your towers, and check to see that the fans are silent, and the CPU's heatsink is absolutely dustfree.. If the fan is plugged-up with dust, your computer will eventually bake its hd into trash... Every old tower that one acquires, the first things to do are: Don't bring it straight into the home.. Bleach wash the case, then open it outside, upwind of it for-sure.. Those things are dust and bug collectors.. Bedbugs is nearly a global epidemic now.. Mites is already a global epidemic... Use air pressure, plus soft brush, to clean the tower inside.. Try to be upwind of the dust, that stuff is seriously bio-toxic.. Bleach what you can... Don't spray it with bug sprays.. Those sprays melt plastic, and damage eyes... Maybe someone could invent, build, and sell "tower dust cover boxes" to be set on top of towers, so all the air the tower gets is already filtered dustfree... Add a plastic duct-pipe for the tower's exhaust.. Not good to restrict cooling fan exhaust... Maybe RedHat could patent this filter-box, and make some good money on it.. a gift for allowing us to use this wonderful Fedora gem for free... fsck exits with error status, even though no errors are found

kernel-2.6.35.14-96.fc14.i686 During boot, when the time comes for fsck'ing the file systems, whatever script is doing that, is exiting with an error status, even though no errors are displayed, and I am prompted to either enter the root password, or type Contrl-D to continue. Cntrl-D simply reboots. Entering the root password, and running fsck manually to check all filesystems in fstab, yields that all is well, no errors are found, and the exit status is 0. Would appreciate some info on identifying the script that does the fsck during boot. Thanx.

Unable to boot from live CD or install from DVD

Hello, I have been using Fedora (KDE spin) for quite some time. There was absolutely no problem till Fedora 14. But now when I try to install Fedora 15, the live CD does not boot. I have tried Gnome Live CD and also the DVD. I even tried the pre-upgrade procedure. All give the same result. The CD/DVD begins to boot, some text messages appear and finally the CD/DVD activity stops with the line [ 1.319497] [<c040377e>] kernel_thread_helper+0*6*0*10. My machine is Lenovo C 200 (Intel Atom D410 dual core processor). I am not a computer expert. But I am moderately familiar with Linux because I have been using it for more than 12 years. How do I overcome this problem? - Vijayan
