[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? Ranter or evangelist?

Why is it that, when I insert an audio disk, I see it as an audio disk on my desktop, but when I click it, GNOME shows the .wav files that are present. No application is suggested, even under "Open", to play the damned music. If I go to Application, sound and video, the first option, "Audio Player", opens XMMS. Great! I click the forward button... I'm presented with a list of the... no, no, no! not the files on the CD, but the files in my home directory!!! Wow, we're really moving forward! I painfully navigate to /media, there's nothing in /media. Let's check mtab, my DVD/CD is on sr0, I believe. Nope, nothing there. Well, if the intend was to scare away Mac and Windows users, I would think that the success rate is 100%. I've been using Linux for 8 years and even "I" am scared! I do understand Fedora is for geeks, but would it make their life that difficult if things kinda worked? Didn't anybody notice that the present set-up makes absolutely no sense? At least, normally, you should go to => System, Preference, File Management, Media to select a default CD and DVD player. Still impossible! No option to change anything. I wrote about this. Nobody replied. Who's responsible for setting things this way? Is anyboby responsible somewhere or is it "We do all this together in a haphazard way" ? If so, never expect any significant market share for Linux. Radio-Canada will continue to use Windows Media because "Linux is too hard for ordinary people" (MSFT trademark). You think I'm a ranter? I've been told this quite often. But, while some people write code, I write to the Quebec Press Council. I explain that a certain so-called journalist is just a Microsoft sycophant. Every time he used Windows Vista, of course, there were a few... almost bugs. but certainly no show stopper. With Linux, the question is more complex. When a new version of Firefox comes out, for instance, instead of waiting for the upgrade, he gets the executable at Mozilla and, then, everything gets really complicated. Of course, the Press Concil understands perfectly what's going on. I made sure my basic complaint was very easy to understand: I explained the journalist NEVER discussed the appropriateness for the State -- television, amongst others -- of using proprietary format and never discussed tied sales. That's it, that's all. Still, after counceiding that the Press organisation lawyers had well understood my POV, the Council judged that the journalist gives a lot of coverage to Linux -- they didn't elabore on the kind of coverage: they can't evaluate, of course -- and, you know, given that Linux hardly has 1% of the market share, they found the coverage was adequate. So, I filed an appeal... and sent a copy to the Professional Federation of Journalists... I got my appeal. But the fight is far from over. The Press Council is heavily subsidized by the employer of said journalist, and Radio-Canada, another member of the Microsoft club. Seeing subsidies vaporize scares the shit out of those learned men: they could lose their precious jobs! So, they'll try every trick in the book to give a very mild tone to their judgement. But I have a few other tricks in my book to set the records straight, though having the support from the Linux community would certainly help. Cause... do you really believe I got any help from local coders for this fight? I got none, absolutely NONE. Why? Cause I'm a ranter. In other words, though I am not a programmer, when I see things that are not done correctly, I say so. They tell me I should fix the bugs. Why is it that there are so many programmers and I can't even set a default application for reading CD and DVDs? While I'm alone to do what I consider my job, why is it that the whole community doesn't get its act together to do such simple things? Sometimes I wished I could proselytize in a more positive way. I'd like to tell Apple users that Linux equals or surpasses OS X in user friendlyness, but it doesn't. It was like this ten years ago, it is still like this now. Countrary to what we could think from the success of Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple, in the Linux world, the only people who count are programmers. They'll fix things... soon. But Linux is not so young anymore. After 18 years, it has 1% market share. I believe there are some organizational bugs that need to be ironed out. For now, from an administrative POV, Linux is a merry-go-round that doesn't make much sense. What do you say, am I a ranter or an evangelist? Is it good for Linux to be ruled by programmers, the alternative not being necessarily the marketing department? :) Red Hat has some clout. How come they don't say "We want a music player that first detects CD files and plays them" and accept to include them on the default CD only on this condition? Etc., etc., etc.

Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work with Fedora 11

Unrelated to topic: I lost quite a bit of messages downloading them from Altern to Thunderbird and not being able to upload afterwards* but I would like to thank Todd Zullinger for reminding me that welcome messages are not just a way for forums owner to be polite :) But somethimes, you have many things to read... * ping smtp.altern.org ping: unknown host smtp.altern.org This used to work, but not anymore, according to lantre.org. So, I'll have to set up a Gmail account. Later. ----------------------------- Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work I discovered a bug with the setting of my printer, an HP 1012. The configuration seemed really easy as it was identified correctly on a USB Port. A few clicks, and I was done. I didn't even check to see if it worked: I never had a problem setting this printer for years. Then, I tried to print and I had a message saying that the printer wasn't connected. Weird: CUPS was installed, the wire was OK. I went back to configuration and I saw there's an option for using HAL, the Hardware Abstraction Layer. I do believe HAL has always been part of setting my printer. So, I selected it but received the message that the HPIJS driver was not available. (Note that I tried the Gutenprint driver when the printer wasn't set to use HAL: it didn't work.) I installed hpijs, now everything is fine. I don't remember ever being asked to use HAL with another distro: it was always put to contribution, I suppose. So, there must be a way around this. Most newbies will never consider an option that isn't selected by default for a printer. Most probably other printers that use HPIJS have the same problem. Those that use ppd files, probably not.

Did I really install Kmod-Nvidia ?

There are all sorts of instructions as to how to install Kmod-Nvidia on Fedora, but I thought yum would do a better job of guessing my configuration (x86_64, 9400 GT) to get the most up-to-date correct package and getting everything right. So, I just typed: yum install kmod-nvidia Now, /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this: # Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AIGLX" "on" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection The file is only a few minutes old... So, I suppose it's a new config for the Kmod driver. But the process was so transparent, I can't help but wonder if all those modifications to the kernel that I read about in the doc have been made. If so, why not provide the documentation that all that is needed is to type the yum command? The Nouveau driver worked very well and, since I'm not too sure I'll install 3D, maybe I could have kept it. But my screen kept blanking once in a while for a few seconds. This happened with my previous computer too -- it had an old ATI card, the same monitor and a very standard open source driver for ATI -- but not so often and not for so long: it was just a quick blank. I thought this might fix the problem. Also, I intend to install a TV card and, it anything doesn't work, I'm sure the first suggestion from Nvidia will be to install their driver. As the material I buy is only on a one week money back guarantee, I prefer to make sure everything works in advance. Also, as it often happens when I download new packages, there was a socket error and a long (~ 1-2 min) halt before another server took over. (I forgot to save the console screen before I rebooted, but the name "liberty" was part of it.) After the installation finished, the rx/tx light of the modem began flashing very fast as if there was a download occuring... or maybe an upload if some information on the installation has to be sent back to rpmfusion or nvidia. No indication of what was going on appeared onscreen. Is this anything to be concerned about? Any idea What this transfer was about?

Problems with 3COM 3C900Combo

Hi all Fedora users, I have just joined this list. I am running the latest Fedora but I can't get my 3C900Combo networking card to work. I can see that the card is installed but no IP-address is asigned to it and I can't set it. So I think that there is a bug in that driver. Any other user out there who have a solution for this? Hi all I know that is not a specific question about Fedora, but I can't find answer on the kernel mailing list. Is somebody having server with integrated ATI RAGE XL video card? Is it possible to patch the kernel to support this video card? If I add VGA=791 in my grub.conf, I will have a resolution of 1024x768 which is good, but the display is very slow (especially when the screen is scrolling). If I use I this: "video=aty128fb:1024x768@70" it will not work. I'm using kernel 2.4.22 but I will try 2.6.0-test11 today. If somebody has a patch, a link or anything else that can help me, it will be appreciated. Thanks for your help. I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine) In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster is working fine In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig... Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but fine on a router/firewall. Tnx Antonio

Fedora hangs driving me nuts, in Windows it works without problems!

My work Fedora 17 64bit box gangs without reason, and I can't track down issue causing it! When I reboot into Windows 7 32bit it works for days without any hangs. This is a company PC so IT installed Windows 7, but I don't use it, that is why I installed Fedora and use it as my primary desktop. I'm not some guru sysadmin, but I'm not a newbie, as I have been using Linux over 10 years as my primary desktop and have few private servers that I maintain, I have troubleshooted and fixed numerous issues with mine and friends machines. My desktop works perfectly for hours, sometime for days, but after some time (usually 1-2 days) it just freezes. It doesn't matter how many free memory I have, which apps I'm runnig or which desktop I'm using. I tried leaving just desktop running with no apps, still freezes, changed desktops, kde - hangs, gnome 3 - hangs, mate - gangs, tried leaving multiple apps doing something, still hangs. I ran memory test utils, memory is working ok. These gangs are driving me nuts! Is anybody having unexplained hangs with Fedora 16 and 17 64bit? Could it be some 64bit issue because Windows is 32bit and it works? How can I troubleshoot what is causing hangs of my machine? Print Job Not getting to Printer

Fedora 17 Samsung CLX3175FX, CLX3170 Series driver. The driver for this printer does work in Fedora 17 on about ten other boxes with Fedora 17. But not on this HP Pavilion S5510F PC, in Fedora 17 , I had it working on Fedora 15. Here is some simple commands I have run and the printer in seen . The Router even sees the printer at 192.168.1.127. Cupsd is running in Services. What are the limitations of preupgrade

Preupgrade used to be quite limited in capability, and restricted to a single version upgrade at a time. I have some systems I would rather not upgrade by hand if possible, but they need to go from fc13 to fc17, and I'm sure doing it insteps would take more effort on my part than a single step and some fixup. I noted that preupgrade offers to try to go to to fc17 in a single step, but it's not obvious if it's kidding me or itself. Downtime should be minimized, so it's worth at least considering. Renewing sendmail.pem, and other self-signed certs

I have an original sendmail.pem that was generated with /etc/pki/tls/certs/make-dummy-cert (which is similar to /etc/pki/tls/certs/Makefile), but it's now expired. Bugzilla - Modeset - Kernel 3.4 to 3.6 upgrade no longer boots

Good afternoon, I have been running my laptop on various versions of FC without a problem and am currently on FC16 running Gnome 3 in full mode. Recently the FC16 Kernel was updated from 3.4.11 to 3.6.2 and my laptop (Dell Latitude D610 ) would no longer boot - although I could go back to any 3.4 kernel and it booted ok and worked under Gnome 3. There were no messages on the failed 3.6.x boot - the screen just went blank. After a bit of delving it seemed that a similar problem had been reported in relation to Plymouth and modesetting. Following that track lead me to 'Bug 845745 - kernel version 3.5.0-2 hangs at boot with modesetting: "conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver" ' on Fedora Bugzilla. I did try the 'nomodeset', and that does allow a boot under 3.6.2, but then Gnome 3 goes into fallback mode. Does anyone know if this will be fixed under FC16, or is this a generic Kernel fix that will appear across all releases that use that kernel?

Hello, How can be used EBTABLES in addition to IPTABLES to forward traffic from an internal LAN to an external? Suppose that I have an internal LAN with private IPs, and a Gateway that control the traffic to the outside, and I only need forward traffic for certain MAC address regardless IP address. Hello why is html/css display on fedora on firefox and google chrome alike is different than on other os ? some times the size of a font can break the display of a site which looks right on windows and not on fedora. is there a way to work around this issue by tweaking some settings on firefox and google chrome ? thanks

First f17 install -- on an ee701

I have 1Gb of memory upgrade, so I have enough memory. My SSD is only 4Gb, but I have a 16GB SD card. So the SSD is setup for /boot with 300Mb, swap with 1.6Gb and the rest is /var. The SD is / The challenge with the install is the small screen size. I complained about this and submitted a bug on it with f14 (which was the only install I have made on this ee701). Apparently the developers did not feel it necessary to do anything about adjusting the dialog sizes to the actual screen size. For the most part I was able to guess what keys to hit for the buttons cut off below the bottom of the screen. I could not see how to setup a LVM on the SD, so it is just and ext4 partition. Also I could not go into customizing the packages for the install and although I did provide my local repos so I grabbed all the updates right off, I had to just go with the standard graphic desktop package install.... Next I will have to do the gnome 3 customizations. Though I MIGHT just leave it for the defaults for a while, rather than all the customzations I did for this f16 notebook a year ago. I actually would like to wait for f18 for upgrading my main notebook; I kind of like skipping releases... Anyway. so far so good.

Dynamode PCI serial card into Fedora 17 system

My system already had one serial port, ttyS0 which is working. I've installed a Dynamode 2-port serial card and the kernel sees the two ports. This provides two ports is: PCI Spec Revision 2 compliant Compatible with 16C550 UART and says that it supports Linux. However, I can't use them. I've tried using both minicom and faxxaddmodem (I'm setting up a Hylafax modem bank). Can anyone suggest what I need to do please. Not a lot of visual differences although I like the new wallpaper, but I liked the 16 wallpaper too. One BIG nit for me was with CD/DVD burning. It would calculate the checksum, burn, check the disc, but then it would give an error saying it couldn't eject the disc, but the button worked and good 'ole eject /dev/sr0 worked as well. This has been a problem since F15 but it seems to have finally been fixed. Thanks for a great release! Richard

Newbie setup issues - Hylafax 6.0.6.tar.gz on Fedora 17

This is my first attempt at installing Hylafax. I have managed to install 6.0.6 from the tarball onto a brand new F17 system. I am wanting to use this as an automated fax receive and forward system so I haven't looked at the sending side of the system yet. I'm also new to systemd having being used to old init based systems. So far I have two problems. 1) Through googling I have managed to get faxgetty running and can receive faxes if I first start the system by issuing the command systemctl start faxgetty-ttyS0.service However, if I reboot the services doesn't start automatically. I'm running Fedora-17/KDE on my laptop, and am trying to run wireshark. I've yum-installed wireshark, wireshark-gnome and wireshark-devel. Fixing a crashed disk

I quite stupidly unplugged my computer today when my foot got tangled in the power strip. On reboot, I was notified Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 8 Offline uncorrectable sectors Smartctl tells me the problem is at LBA 2014551336 (this is a 2TB disk). Following the info here http://kaivanov.blogspot.com/2010/09/fixing-disk-problems-under-linux-with.… I'm not able to determine what file might be sitting on this block. tune2fs -l /dev/sda5 |grep Block Block count: 472552448 Block size: 4096 Blocks per group: 32768 [root@sds-desk-2 ~]# debugfs debugfs 1.42.3 (14-May-2012) debugfs: open /dev/sda5 debugfs: icheck 235992741 Block Inode number 235992741 8 debugfs: ncheck 8 Inode Pathname This suggests that the problem is not in a currently extant file. I'm now trying the suggestion of writing from /dev/zero to a file in /home while in single users mode. Given that I have 1.5TB to fill, this could take a while. Here's the question: If I just reformat and restore /home from a recent backup, will the disk automatically deal with the sectors pending reallocation?

Hi all I have: $ rpm -q bc bc-1.06.95-3.fc15.i686 I was searching the web for bc funs to calculate cube roots and other arbitrary roots. Almost all of the func I found assume that bc has the built-in funcs l and e which take a numeric arg. Yet my bc has no such funcs. Is the version above broken?

No Music or Movies Play in F17 - Missing Gstreamer?....

I have a Gateway T-6321 that I recently had to re-install Fedora Linux v17 on. I've put just about everything that was on there from before (Totem, Clementine...Thunderbird etc.) but when I try to play movies in Totem or music in Clementine I get errors such as: Clementine: - "Your GStreamer installation is missing a plugin." Totem: - "A program requires additional plugins to decode this file: The following plugins are required: H.264 decoder MPEG-4 AAC decoder Do you want to search for these now? getting dumped to emergency console on boot

Anyone else seeing this? I'm getting dropped to emergency mode during boot since my last F16 yum update. It included a kernel update, but I'm not certain yet that it is the kernel, because it's not 100% reproducible. Issuing a ^D gets me to GDM and the system appears to work. I googled this and came across 2 purported solutions, neither of which worked. 1. Uninstall package biosdevname and reboot. That did not prevent udevd from renaming eth0 to em1. 2. Add the line biosdevname=0 to /boot/grub2/grub.cfg That did not work either. Any other way to get around this renaming?

I am trying to reduce the size of the image to a fixed width (usually about 20%) while keeping the text as readable as possible. If I do this in GIMP, "cubic" will not produce the desired result. Lanczos comes close. I assume that I can get even closer with "convert." Slow is fine. Can some kind sole, more clever with graphics than I am, suggest the -filter * that I am looking for? TIA

Remote Amarok music collection?

Hi folks! :-) I am trying to migrate from XMMS to Amarok, with the hope of improved functionality and ease of dealing with my music collection. So I have a very trivial problem: my music collection is now on a http server. How do I get Amarok to make a collection database out of that, short of downloading all that to a local disk? The very point of having all the files on a http server is that I *don't* want to have them on a local disk. So I want Amarok to create a database of the files present on the server, from which I can later create playlists. The music would stay on the server, and Amarok would read the files over http and play them one by one. I can do all this trivially with, say, mplayer --- I just need a text file containing lines of http://www.myserver.com/music.mp3, and it would play if I do a "mplayer -playlist myplaylist.txt". What I want is to do the equivalent in Amarok, since I expect to have a better UI regarding the order of files, shuffle&repeat stuff, etc. Amarok doesn't appear to have a "load playlist from a txt file" kind of option. N.B. I've been using Amarok for about 20 minutes total, so please tell me that I have missed something really obvious. ;-) :-) Marko

systemd shutdown/reboot problems

Hi, I have a home server which runs F17 and for a long time now it just doesn't reboot or shutdown cleanly. I've had the same issue since it was running F16 and possibly F15. When the server shuts down, I get spurious messages about some services failing or a dependency was not met for the shutdown target, or sometimes a black screen with a line which just says "Adding Swap target" (really, on a shutdown?). The output seems to vary every time, sometimes wildy different but the end result is often the same, having to hit the reset button. How do I about starting to diagnose these problems with systemd? Given that the system is left in a state where I can't do anything with it. The usual places such as /var/log/messages doesn't turn up anything useful. Maybe because syslog has already been stopped by then. -- Ian Chapman.

Dual boot with Windows question

Hi, I'd like to install Windows 7 and fc17 on my laptop that has two disks. I'd like to use one disk for Windows and one for Linux. Should I just install Windows first, then Linux? How do I replace the Windows boot loader with grub and still be able to boot Windows? Thanks, Alex

Failed Displaying jpg or png pictures in kde

F17 /KDE-4.9.2-1 I did a fresh install from F10 to F17 ,but I kept the old User directory in the /home partition. I did delete the old .kde /user/directory from the F10 install. I can view most of the jpg or png pictures in /home/user directory, but there is a number of jpg or png that I can't view, I get this error message: "Failed Loading Meta information, failed" This problem is all over a Google search ,but no solutions on correcting the problem.

Chinese written character input support?

Installed Fedora 17 on a laptop and trying to get Chinese input working for a user who doesn't know pinyin (therefore he needs to write the characters using mouse/tablet). I've tried WritRecogn and while it recognises characters, doesn't input them anywhere (like into Firefox). I've installed cellwriter but can't get past training mode after drawing all the characters. I've installed tomoe but can't find a way actually use it. There used to be scim-tomoe package (presumably for scim support) but it no-longer exists since F12. So is it possible or am I trying in vain? Thanks, -c

Newbie question abt network install

Sorry if this is the wrong forum -- if it is, please direct me to the right one. I rent a virtual personal server in another city that runs Fedora 16. I want to upgrade it to 17. I did the yum-based preupgrade and such, but am stuck. The instructions I read said to reboot and then choose upgrade at the boot screen. Since this is a network machine that has no boot screen, I need to tell the box to upgrade in some other way. Is there a way to to a yum upgrade over the network without seeing a boot screen? logrotate/logwatch error on fc15

Hi, I have an fc15 box and I'm having a problem with logwatch. I'm using bzip2 for the compresscmd for logrotate, yet it somehow is giving the compressed files a gz instead of bz2 extension. Logwatch uses this to determine which command to use to read the compressed files, so it therefore is using the wrong command. However, the files seem to be begin rotated. I hoped someone could help clarify what's going on. Chrome + nVidia insta crash

Hi, I have a problem on my current systems running Fedora 17 x86_64 where the latest release of google-chrome-stable (google-chrome-stable-22.0.1229.94-161065.x86_64) crashes X and logs the user out. This used to happen on previous versions sporadically on flash sites due to Chrome's built in pepper flash player and the NSAPI one installed for firefox being both recognized and enabled, but now it's completely unusable so I'm reverting to an older version. Trying to isolate this I discovered that if I pulled my nVidia cards that we use and use the onboard video it doesn't crash. I also applied all available yum patches including kernel/nv driver but still happens. My questions: 1. Anyone else having similar problems? 2. If I file a bug on Fedora's bugzilla for this will it even see any attention since chrome/nVidia are not officially supported? Thanks, Josh

problem with bbswitch module on reboot

I am using the 'bbswitch' module to disable the nvidia card and save power on a laptop with optimus. I removed nouveau permanently by blacklisting and then running dracut. I compiled bbswitch with 'dkms' and then added the following: #!/bin/sh if [ ! -c /proc/acpi/bbswitch ] ; then exec /sbin/modprobe bbswitch load_state=0 >/dev/null 2>&1 fi to /etc/sysconfig/modules. This works perfectly if the laptop is started up after powering off ('power off' from the menu or 'shutdown -h now') However when I 'restart' (from the menu or 'shutdown -r now') this does not work: 'bbswitch' can't find the discrete VGA device! Unsupported Hardware with 3.6.2-1.fc16.x86_64 on FC 16

Everyone, With the update of the new kernel 3.6.2-1.fc16.x86_64 on FC16 I am getting a new message on the lower right hand corner of my desktop that is about an 1 inch by 1 inch in size telling me that there is "Unsupported Hardware" present. The title in this box appears to be "AMD" with an blocked arrow pointing up and to the right. I am using an HP Pavilion g7-1117cl Notebook. Also with this new kernel it appears that "kernel-tools-devel" appears broken. "Error: Protected multilib versions: kernel-tools-3.1.0-7.fc16.i686 != kernel-tools-3.6.2-1.fc16.x86_64" Anyone have any ideas??? Greg Ennis

How to build an USB driver/data extractor?

I have a Magnetic card reader and two linux machines (ubuntu and fedora) I would like to build an USB driver/data extractor with something like Ruby or Python (preferably ruby) The device plugs and powers on, and sliding a card results in outputing a strange code from wich I would like to extract info like the owner's name and stuff... Hi, Videos (e.g. 350MB avi file of 40 minutes playback) don't play properly, goes out of sync, momentary stops (they play ok on laptop, so not corrupted). The problem seems to have started after I enabled some assistive technology, which nearly paralysed the performance of the computer. After disabling and deleting the assistive stuff (su -c "yum remove at-spi*") the computer is still performing somewhat poorly, not being able to do as much stuff as before and being generally much slower (notably when opening multiple web pages, e.g. several weather reports, about 10 tabs). I assumed that there could be something that is still kicking in and slowing the system down. Sorry to be so vague, but I don't recall any better what I did. I'm running Fedora 16, GNOME 3.2.1 is installed but I use XFCE, Kernel Linux 3.4.11-1.fc16.i686.PAE, RAM 1.2GB, Processor Intel Celeron CPU 2.4GHz, Available disk space 84GB. My computer is about 7 years old. I could reinstall the system, and I'm confident that would remove this problem, but I would much prefer to find the problem, and fix it. I have looked at some top output, but don't notice anything relevant (if anyone wants to see any of such, let me know what to do to get useful output). Any suggestions where I could start or what to look for would be welcome. TIA, Joe

Hi, Just a heads up, in case anyone else decides (against all sanity) to try using Skype, *and* get a webcam working, on 64-bit Fedora 17, you get stymied by: Skype being only released in 32 bit Skype wanting video for Linux 1 Fedora 17 uses video for Linux 2 Web pages offering advice for Mint and Ubuntu So, yum install libv4l-(whatever).i686. In my case, today, that was: yum install libv4l-0.8.8-2.fc17.i686 Make yourself a script to launch skype with a compatibility library #!/bin/bash # # force preloading of a 32 bit video for linux 1 # compatibility library for video for linux 2 LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype Use that to start up Skype, instead of its own menu item. No doubt you could put that command line into a desktop launcher, with out the bin bash shebang. And my comments aren't needed, they're just so I don't have to remember why I use that script. And you're, now, related to Bob. Tested with: skype-4.0.0.8-fc16.i586 libv4l-0.8.8-2.fc17.i686 NB: If you simply name your launch script "skype", and put it in your file search path, I don't know whether it's safe to launch Skype in the script with a one-word "skype" command. It might go around in circles. You could change my sample launch script to use the full path to skype, instead. i.e. LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype Anyone care to try this and confirm that it works for more than just me? Prior to this, I just got a black screen in Skype, instead of my webcam (which does work, if tested in VLC). Hi, I have been trying to setup Fedora 17 via boxgrinder as a LAMP server. What I am stuck at is getting apache httpd to use a umask of 002. I have added "umask 0002" to /etc/sysconfig/httpd but it doesn't seem to be used. I built a Fedora 15 configuration which did use the umask, then tested with Fedora 16 and found it did not work. Is this a bug or is there now a different method for setting apache's umask? Thanks Ron

I do hope someone can help me here. I am learning Ruby on Rails. It requires javascript to be installed for both Firefox and Chromium browsers. Following the instructions at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_x64rpm_install.xml jre installed, made link sudo ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_07/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so Restarted firefox but it does not find jre. I have <Enable Javascript> enabled in preferences. Still get Ruby on Rails ExecJS::RuntimeError. Can someone instruct me in what to do to get jre working on firefox and Chromium in Fedora 16 please. I have also installed as per instructions at: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_x64_install.xml This also fails, it appears to be only an upgrade. Thanks in advance Roger

I've just joined the Fedora Project and, after a fair amount of fumbling around, managed to add Bernhardt as a suggestion to the bottom of the list at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Name_suggestions_for_Fedora_19#Suggestion_Ta… As a comment, it wasn't at all obvious that the only way to do this was to edit the wiki page to add your idea to the list. Here's hoping that it gets accepted!

About 'cost' in repo conf?

In the yum.conf manual is: "cost: relative cost of accessing this repository. Useful for weighing one repo's packages as greater/less than any other. defaults to 1000" At first I thought I could use that to set a repo priority but it doesn't work (I set cost to both >1000 and <1000 and ran 'yum clean all' after any change to check). The latest version of a package is offered regardless of those settings. So that 'cost' setting is only for packages of the same version in different repos? I know there's a priority plugin for yum and I'll use it. Best regards.

Unable to run systemd in an LXC / cgroup container.

Hello, This is being directed to the systemd-devel community but I'm cc'ing the lxc-users community and the Fedora community on this for their input as well. I know it's not always good to cross post between multiple lists but this is of interest to all three communities who may have valuable input. I'm new to this particular list, just having joined after tracking a problem down to some systemd internals... Several people over the last year or two on the lxc-users list have been discussions trying to run certain distros (notably Fedora 16 and above, recent Arch Linux and possibly others) in LXC containers, virualizing entire servers this way. This is very similar to Virtuoso / OpenVZ only it's using the native Linux cgroups for the containers (primary reason I dumped OpenVZ was to avoid their custom patched kernels). These recent distros have switched to systemd for the main init process and this has proven to be disastrous for those of us using LXC and trying to install or update our containers. To put it bluntly, it doesn't work and causes all sorts of problems on the host. To summarize the problem... The LXC startup binary sets up various things for /dev and /dev/pts for the container to run properly and this works perfectly fine for SystemV start-up scripts and/or Upstart. Unfortunately, systemd has mounts of devtmpfs on /dev and devpts on /dev/pts which then break things horribly. This is because the kernel currently lacks namespaces for devices and won't for some time to come (in design). When devtmpfs gets mounted over top of /dev in the container, it then hijacks the hosts console tty and several other devices which had been set up through bind mounts by LXC and should have been LEFT ALONE. Yes! I recognize that this problem with devtmpfs and lack of namespaces is a potential security problem anyways that could (and does) cause serious container-to-host problems. We're just not going to get that fixed right away in the linux cgroups and namespaces. How do we work around this problem in systemd where it has hard coded mounts in the binary that we can't override or configure? Or is it there and I'm just missing it trying to examine the sources? I loaded some images to my facebook account but when I see some image I get some blueish colour. In Shotwell colours are fine, same as in the Gimp: furthermore on a different computer running Ubuntu, colours are fine. Fedora 17 NetworkManager is changing Nameserver in resolv.conf to 192.168.1.1 my Router gateway and my setting in /etc/sysconfig/network- scripts/cfg-p128p1 (eth0) are as such. keyboard failure that doesn't seem to be hardware

Hello: I am doing my first F17 install on i686 Xfce and, for the most part, everything is coming up nicely. However, I am noticing that sometimes the keyboard becomes unresponsive. I can't seem to find a reason, it just happens. My first sense was that it was a hardware problem. However, one time I decided to let the session time out so that when I had moved the mouse, I got the "re-enter passwd" dialog box to get back to my session. As could be expected, I couldn't type my password in. So I tried selecting new user login and, lo and behold, if I clicked on myself, it let me enter a password. However, it then immediately went back to the "re-enter passwd" from the session time out and the keyboard was dead. Net result is I find it hard to believe that the hardware is the problem. But I can't figure out what would be locking up the keyboard so that it would appear dead. I also note that I had multiple windows open plus firefox and the keyboard wouldn't work in any of them, so it isn't shell based. One time I ran a tail of /var/log/messages and nothing showed up in it once the keyboard died and it did give me other standard messages when I waited about a half hour to new messages to be flushed to the file. Any ideas about where to start? Everything I spotted online didn't seem to relate ... and I am having a hard time figuring out what a good set of search terms for this problem is. X hangs when screen blanks on docked laptop

I have a Dell Latitude E6410 with nVidia graphics, using the nouveau driver in F17 and gnome-shell. When the machine is docked and using the remote display, all is well until the screen blanker times out. After that, I'm unable to wake the screen up. Opening the lid doesn't help (not too surprising, given that the main screen is set to be off when the remote is attached); switching to a VC doesn't help (which is surprising). The keyboard still works, so I can blindly switch to a VC and reboot, but it's not workable to have to reboot after every 10 minutes of idle time. I created a second userid and tried working with that, and the problem does not recur there, so it apparently has something to do with the configuration of my main userid. I had at one point installed the weather extension and the system monitor extension, but they were problematic so I deleted them (before I tried the experiment with the other userid). That fixed a problem where the screen wouldn't wake up even when undocked, but hasn't fixed this. So any idea what I should look for in my userid's configuration files to fix this? Switch eth0 and eth1, how?

In my server I have eth0 and eth1 (previously were em16, em17, but I hated it so I changed to the traditional approach). Each NIC port is connected to a different ISP. However, more often than not while moving things around I get the cables reversed so ETH0 goes to ISP2 and ETH0 goes to ISP2, or vice versa, ie the cables are interchanged. So... is there a way, in such situation, to manually (say, from a bash script) bring down both eth ports, and re-arrange those? (so that eth1 becomes eth0), and do so without a reboot?. I´d like to make eth0 and eth1 consistent regardless of mixed cabling so every time I bring down eth0 I know what isp I´m bringing down. What IP each port is connected to I can figure out via a query to www.whatismyip.com, but the question remains if it´s possible to change the naming of two ethernet ports without a reboot. What would be the best way? ethtool? TIA FC

enable second monitor in F14?

I tried to uninstall OpenOffice before installing LibreOffice and found that my proprietary ATI X driver was uninstalled too. After sorting that out I wound up sticking with OO after all. But now my monitors mirror each other and I don't see where/how to change to the pan view I had before with independent display content. Suggestions? Laptop doesn't know which display to use when docked.

I am running xfce on F17 completely patched and current. My laptop is a HP probook 6460b. When I boot it docked the grub screen appears on the external display. When the boot has completed the background screen is displayed on the external display. I get no login prompt on the external display. I press enter a couple of times the login display will appear and I'll log in then the external display goes dark. I open up the laptop and it's display has the desktop on it and I have to manually switch to the external display and discontinue use of the laptop display. If both displays are selected for use the whole thing wants to act like a twin head setup which I don't want. What do I have to do to get the laptop to use the external display when docked and it's own display when it isn't automagically. To undock the laptop I have to reverse the display procedure of course. This also makes it impossible to "undock and run" without making manual changes as to which display to use.

Hi, After updating the kernel of the Fedora-17 installation on my laptop (from 3.5.4 to 3.6.1), both of my umts-modems aren't found anymore. The first one (was usb0) is integrated into the notebook, the one I typically use is an external ZTE MF652. The ZTE's cdrom emulation (used for windows setup files) is detected, however I can't see any new network devices created. Is this a known issue, or should I open a bug-report? As far as I can see, KAddressBook/Kontact has become completely non-functional, with entered contacts being entirely invisible except when exported as a CSV list. In my experience, KAddressBook has always been pretty bad, but it has now become, as I said, completely useless. (I asked about this on the KDE mailing list, but the only response I got was from someone else who said he had the same experience.) The biggest issue being the dreaded "Access Denied" error when trying to open the share from Dolphin, though Samba4K does the same thing. What I really need is a concise guide to setting up Samba that includes everything. Most guides talk about setting up samba.conf. I need one that covers everything. An update to the weather app used in gnome-shell was introduced in the testing area but it does not work. Does anyone know if there is a bug report filed for this problem. It works for every area but Aurora, Co. who uses yahoo.com for their weather code source. -- All things are workable but don't all things work. Prov. 3:5 & 6

why is a .txt file being run as a php script?

On my local system I have apache running so I can test web pages before I upload them to my ISP. I have a sample .php script which I explicitly named with a .php.txt suffix so it would be treated as a plain text file, not a php script. Yet apache is clearly running the php script rather than just uploading the plain text copy of the script when I click on the link to the .php.txt file. Anyone have any clue what is causing this to happen? I can't imagine this is something that would be desirable behavior :-). I made it stop by turning off php completely in the subdirectory holding the pages, but I still what to understand what on earth was making it run the script in the first place.

Plans for anaconda LVM/RAID support

I'm sure that this information is somewhere on the Fedora Wiki, but my search-fu apparently isn't up to the task of finding it. What are the plans for LVM and/or software RAID support? Currently (F18 Beta TC2), it seems to be impossible for those of us who have fully allocated our storage to either (or both) of these technologies to install Fedora 18 at all. Hi all, I'm having a bit of trouble setting up a new web server. The last time I set up up it went smoothly, but for some reason I can't connect to the HTTP port on this one. Any clues what I'm missing? I can: 1. SSH into my server from an external workstation. 2. Ping my server by DNS name from an external workstation. 3. Hi all, Is it possible to install OOo alongside LO on F17? When I try, rpm complains that "file /usr/bin/soffice from install of openoffice.org3.4-freedesktop-menus-3.4-9593.noarch conflicts with file from package libreoffice-core-1:3.5.6.2-4.fc17.x86_64". Is there a workaround? Thanks.

PowerShot G2 When I try to import the picture by using shotwell I get an error message: Unable to fetch previews from the camera: I/O problem (-7) But When I do the same from root, this glitch disappears. How can I fix it? F16 on Lenovo x120e - cannot resume out of suspend mode

This started last friday. Basically if I suspend the system comes up but no video and no keyboard response. Power switch off does not seem to work, I have to pull AC and battery and I hear the drive stop. This started when I had some runaway tasks that were eating up all my CPU (only single core model) so I was switching to terminal 2 <ctl-alt-sft-F2>, running top, figuring out what might be going crazy, switching back to terminal 1 and stopping programs. After about 5 of these switchs, no switching back to terminal 1 and reboot and poweroff did not do anything (actually no keyboard response). I ended up pulling the battery. Since then suspend has stopped working right; don't know if they are related. This evening, I powered up, applied all updates, powered down, powered up, powered down, powered up, THEN tried suspend and no dice still. I WAS traveling and thursday, the notebook was in my backback on a 9 hour drive, but not particularly bounced around. It came out of suspend just fine friday morning. Or so it seemed. Advice for trouble shooting? I really don't want to reinstall Fedora, I was hoping to wait until F18 for the next OS install.

Hi, I am running hostapd on top of backfire (hostapd) on WRT54GL LinkSys device with b43 driver. I have very simple, minimalistic hostapd configuration. Now , I run on the LinkSys device: hostapd /etc/hostapd.conf and it starts OK. On a nearby Fedora 17 Linux machine I insert wifi USB card, and the Network Manager identifies the BSS (of the hostaod on the LinkSys device). Hi list mates, Using GRUB2 of openSUSE 12.2 in dual booting with Fedora 17 is not problem as it is automatically listed by openSUSE 12.2 installer when Fedora 17 system is installed first (AND in single "/" partition) , but there is an issue when it is opposite, using GRUB2 of Fedora 17. (AND with separates partitions -- /boot = hda2, & /boot/efi = hda1) parted -l: http://paste.kde.org/567956/raw/ How to solve this issue? When dual booting using GRUB2 of Fedora 17 with seperate "/boot" (+ /boot/efi) partition? Thanks in advance. Best regards, -- Andi Sugandi.

yum upgrade problem

Hi, i sorry if this was already posted in the list; i was a long day and tomorrow holds no promises. Today i check for updates (using a cli) and it listed various things to updates (i have updates-testing enable), and some of them was from other repos (more specifically the remi repo). I always try to check the change log to know if something can affect my system and one way of doing it is firing up the gui and checking the details option, but today the gui only displays the firefox 16.0.1, this was strange but i didn't have much time and i updated using the cli (using the yum update firefox). I come back later and both the gui and cli say to me that there is noting more to update. First i think is something related to the mirrors and sync, and decided to do a yum clean all. Fedora 16 User Manager: can't edit Group Properties

Hi: My f16 installation has been successively upgraded from about f12. My tv cards are recognised by the kernel, but ioctl problems have interfered with the setting up of new cards while not affecting the use of those already known. A post I saw today claimed that apparently similar problems in Ubuntu could be cured by re-adding a user somehow lost from the video group. http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/16/html/System_Administrators_Gu… My attempts to add a user with the User Manager fail. I'm told the video group already exists, try a new name. I deleted and re-created the (empty) video group and still could not add any users to it. Now the two User Manager windows cannot be closed; attempts to minimise them just redraw them. Any suggestions gratefully received. John P

Fedora 17 install dualboot with Windows 7 Home Premium goes nowhere

Friends, After years of providing services to students for free in installing Fedora, I hit a wall this afternoon and don't quite know how to get out of it. The offending laptop is a HP Pavilion DV6 with Windows 7 Home Premium on it. We paritioned the HDD using Windows 7 creating a separate partition and went off to install Fedora on the new partition from a Live CD. Installation went off as a breeze, however, after reboot all hell broke loose. Grub did not show up, what is worse is that a broken Windows Error Recovery did with the Launch Startup Repair, etc. However, it asks for the original installation disc for Windows 7 which the retailer never provided. I tried using PW o fix the MBR as mentioned here: http://www.sevenforums.com/software/135486-how-do-i-repair-mbr-without-disk… but no luck: it goes back to this screen. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this? I feel embarrassed and responsible for this student's fancy laptop now. He needs to have W7 to use the BluRay so we were thinking of a dual boot originally, but at this point, I am trying to salvage whatever. F17: How to overcome NetworkManagers /etc/resolv.conf ?

Hi ALL, on my just installed Fedora 17 I've a problem with /etc/resolv.conf: Beginning of /etc/resolv.conf reads: # Generated by NetworkManager domain domain_not_set.invalid search domain_not_set.invalid The following lines for nameserver definitions are fine. How can I ensure to have *correct* domains (I know which ones I need) in the domain and search statement? On my old F14 I use a "supersede" statement in /etc/dhclient.conf but this isn't used anymore on F17 which uses /var/run/nm-dhclient-wlan0.conf (created by NetworkManager). On my old F14 machine, I updated /etc/idmapd.conf and updated the "[Mapping]" section of the config file: Nobody-User = paulbsch Nobody-Group = paulbsch No other changes were made and this works as expected. File ownership under the nfs4 mount is correctly mapped to "paulbsch" instead of "nobody". With F17, this no longer works properly. File ownership under the same mount is still mapped to "nobody". Can't print txt file

Fedora 17/ KDE Trying to print a k Kwrite txt or a image file, open file and click on Print and another window opens and it will only let you print as a pdf or ps output. No other options. What could be the problem ?? I wished there was a way that I could send a Snap Shot of the window that opens, to select how you want to print file.

K3B won't burn Imaqe

Fedora 15 an 17 Trying to burn Fedora image on CD-R , the disk is new. When opening the k3b Create window it shows blank media in cd/dvd burner, but in the burn window it is telling you place blank cd in drve , even if you open and close drive it sill does not show a blank Cd and you can't burn. I have burn cd/dvd's in this drive.

Repeated segfaults in F17

Beginning about an hour ago, I've been hit with a ton of application terminations. All of them say the same thing: "Signal 11 (SIGSEGV). Which I believe translates as "Signal segmentation violation." If it were the same application, that would be one thing. But at least two, and maybe three, applications are running into this: vlc skype-2.2.0.35-2.x86_64 (And by the way: that program worked for the past two days.) And maybe: thunderbird Thunderbird, as I said in another thread, has been crashing with every action I try to take, especially composing new messages, replies, and forwards. -- Temlakos <temlakos(a)gmail.com>

Bit of a problem with FireFox in Fedora 16

Using my Fedora 16 on a home installation as a development system. I have 2 sites on VPS remote server, one for dev and one as a live site both using Drupal 7 fully updated. Developing on the dev site, using Drupal 7 firefox locks up for about 3 minutes with one of my CPU's running at 98% with 2 gig memory running at 88%. Other CPU at 12-14%. Once the CPU and memory drop off it's back to normal. I do note that it seems to be only one function in Drupal where this happens, changing a Content Type settings. Does not happen with making similar changes in the the live site which is on the same server but different directory. Is it likely that SELinux may be causing this, if so how do I check and what should I look at to try to fix please. What other things would cause a lock up of firefox for such a long time. Other apps work but slowly because of memory and CPU usage, mouse and keyboard works. None of this happens with the same drupal install on my home dev system. I have run out of ideas on where to look to find causes so if anyone can advise that'd be great. Thanks in advance Roger

Fedora fails to boot with systemd-journald failing

I posted this question on ask Fedora ( http://ask.fedoraproject.org/question/2612/fedora-fails-to-boot-with-system…) but didn't get any answer so I'm asking here also. My computer is in a totally useless state, as I can not boot at all. What I did was I tried to join my root, boot and home partitions into one. I copied the files, updated the grub config and /etc/fstab and recreated the initramfs, all this from a live Fedora environment. Now I can't boot, instead the system hangs at an endless loop printing something like (typing it here from memory) "[FAILED] can't start systemd journal service" over and over again. Screen stopped blanking

I have a Dell Latitude E6410 with an nVidia graphics card, using the nouveau driver and the GNOME desktop on F17. Recently, the laptop screen stopped blanking when idle in X mode. I've modified the screen-blank settings, to no avail. If I switch to a virtual console, blanking works fine. It's possible that the change occurred with a kernel update or an X update, but the nouveau driver hasn't been updated since June. Boot problems with fc17

Hi, I installed fc17 x86_64 on a 1TB disk and it boots fine. I have an old fc15 2TB disk that I'd like to add to the system without making any changes to the disk itself. The problem is that when I boot the system with the fc15 disk installed, it boots the fc15 system using the fc17 kernel. I've tried to switch the boot order in the BIOS, and despite it saying the 1TB fc17 disk is first, it uses grub and initrd from the fc17 disk but mounts the fc15 disk as root and starts to boot from it. How can I either change the grub config on the fc17 disk to properly boot the fc17 system, or otherwise configure my system to support this fc15 disk without having it be accessed during boot? He's running JBoss... Java apps won't drop privs. Non-root can't bind to 80, so he gets JBoss to bind to 8080 then redirects. In the Options tabs, I tried both Mic1 and Mic2 (Not sure which is internal and which is external - as I do have a headset plugged), but still, aurecord exist with the same error message.

Problem with wpa_supplicant

Has anyone else noticed a problem with wireless authentication using wpa_supplicant? Following a router change and consequent messing with passphrases, my Thinkpad with iwl4965 chipset has ceased to authenticate. It can easily connect with the wireless router if the router is 'open' but fails on WEP, WPA and WPA2. The household's mac airbook, ipad, iphone and android phone have no difficulty. I have tried deleting all /etc/sysconfig/network* files, as well as those in wicd and wpa_supplicant and recreating but no joy. Interestingly, the psk reported by a 'iwlist wlan0 scan' for my router is nothing like the psk produced by 'wpa_passphrase essid mysecretpassphrase' scan: 1382882a0e39633131ca70df0db2a9bff9a8f142d47cdde921740e27aea26c77 wpa_passphrase: f389062374809e11f7c30b39b6e34f221b311a963dcb866a318bcee1e4ce0337 Anyone have any idea what's going on? The rep was barely understandable, he finally got around to to having me pull the power cable from uverse modem. This had the effect of also cutting off our phone, something I had not realized, that the uveerse bundle now has our phone line subject to problems/disconnects of the uverse modem. And of course, even though the uverse rep had our phone number which they dutifully take down every time we call, "so that we can call you back in case of a disconnect", he never did call back. That uverse rep also seemed to know nothing about the added 3 pieces of electronic gear that came with the uverse install, so I don't yet know what they are, why such a mess needed. When I crawl under my desk I can see a jumble of 1) aluminum? ~1ft square 2in high box-- a large 'W' on one face. 2) a grey plastic Belkin box ~8in square, 3in high-- another router? 3) a small vanilla box All 3 I think are connected to the uverse modem. there is an additional very thin green wire coming of somewhere in that 3-box mess, that is also connected to the uverse modem. --------- Is there any command sequence to restart/stop/start NetworkManager? Fedora 17 lost+found in / directory after install

Hi all. I am a new user of Fedora 17. I am studying for the Linux certification. I installed Fedora 17 using Vmware Workstation 8. After I completed the installation I checked the directories to insure that everything was installed correctly. When looking at the / directory using the ls command I discovered that /lost+found file was there. I thought that this file is supposed to show up when you choose a directory as a mount point. Could anyone help me understand why this happened and if the lost+found file is not supposed to be there how can I correct the problem? Thank you. George

Hi there, the following code fails on my fedora 17 box: <?php mysqli_init(); ?> PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_init() in /home/gbuday/public_html/init.php on line 3 doing a grep around php -i, /etc/php.ini and /etc/php.d/ I get a seemingly ok configuration, see below. What I had just before the attuverse: an old pacbell adsl modem a linksys router, plugged into that adslmodem. my f16box i think connected into that router. from another room, the imac ethernet connected i think into that router. 2 more things connected but not used for several yrs: a laptop, also i think plugged into that router. some type of wless access point plugged into that router. What we have now since the att uverse install --above adslmodem, router,laptop, access point disconnected. --new uverse modem, tech said it had a router in it, with its own fwall. I can't see any off/on switch on that uverse modem. Would it be worth trying to unplug, and plug back in the black power cable? There is also a uverse WAP, used only to get the uverse tv signals to our two tvs. As far as I know this has nothing to do with our computers. f16box, imac both ethernet connected to that uverse modem. 3 new pieces of some type of electronic gear now under my desk also connected to the uverse modem. The uverse install tech did not explain their use to me, or even point them out to me. Evidently necessary electronics parts needed for the uverse setup. I only noticed them after the tech left. NM has always just been a silent thing, not to be messed with. If it is worth trying how would I do this? I am not at all up on systemd. I haven't had cause to use chkconfig for years, no need. dump/restore selinux query

Hi I have recently used a bootable F17 memory stick (fully updated) to dump/restore an un-mounted Centos 6.3 system root (/) partition to a "clone" backup partition on a separate disk. I obtain SELinux error messages during the restore phase Does anyone (Daniel?) know: Will this be a problem if/when I need to use the backup? A note on youtube-dl

Hi folks! :-) Just a small note... I just tried and found out that the youtube-dl doesn't work anymore. Reading the youtube-dl FAQ page, it says that YouTube has changed the protocol again (since September 2012) and that we should update the script to the latest version. The "sudo youtube-dl --update" works as expected (and once updated, it downloads stuff fine), but I guess someone should notify the relevant package maintainer to update the rpm package, so that it gets pulled in with an ordinary yum update. I wasted half an hour hunting this down, so that noone else needs to. ;-) HTH, :-) Marko
