Yes, that's one of the options I began contemplating, since I see that Amarok
always asks for a location of the music somewhere inside /. I'll look into it,
thanks!
I just want to be sure that there is no simpler way, before I go on to mount a
remote filesystem. Also, will a remote filesystem give me trouble in the
situations where I don't have an Internet connection? Will Amarok be able to
cope with occasional (but regular) loss of the mount point?
On a side note, why do you say that pure http is wrong for this? From where
I'm sitting, I see absolutely no reason to make a distinction between local
music and remote music. It looks like an unneeded limitation of Amarok (or
short-sightedness of its devs?) to require music to reside on a filesystem.
Everything is becoming remote and "clouded" these days. :-) I would prefer the
functionality of having a music collection which contains local files, remote
http files, youtube links, .iso images of audio CD's, etc... Somehow I naively
expected that Amarok already has this functionality... ;-)
Best, :-)

aurecord problem/question
by JD
# aurecord /tmp/a1.wav
Can't connect to audio server
What server is that?
pulseaudio daemon is running:
jd 8829 1 1 Oct02 ? 00:44:46 /usr/bin/pulseaudio
--start --log-target=syslog
Also, in the mixer settings, Capture and Microphone Capture are checked.
In the Options tabs, I tried both Mic1 and Mic2 (Not sure which is internal
and which is external - as I do have a headset plugged), but still, aurecord
exist with the same error message.

Problem with wpa_supplicant
by R. G. Newbury
Has anyone else noticed a problem with wireless authentication using
wpa_supplicant? Following a router change and consequent messing with
passphrases, my Thinkpad with iwl4965 chipset has ceased to
authenticate. It can easily connect with the wireless router if the
router is 'open' but fails on WEP, WPA and WPA2. The household's mac
airbook, ipad, iphone and android phone have no difficulty.
I have tried deleting all /etc/sysconfig/network* files, as well as
those in wicd and wpa_supplicant and recreating but no joy.
Interestingly, the psk reported by a 'iwlist wlan0 scan' for my router
is nothing like the psk produced by 'wpa_passphrase essid
mysecretpassphrase'
scan: 1382882a0e39633131ca70df0db2a9bff9a8f142d47cdde921740e27aea26c77

f389062374809e11f7c30b39b6e34f221b311a963dcb866a318bcee1e4ce0337
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Why graphics drivers are proprietary

The header is self explanatory. I always wonder what bad would it bring to the vendor if they open source their graphics driver? Thoughts?

FWIW, the following is my ifcfg-eth0 in my f16box
Note static IP, NM_Controlled=yes
$ less ifcfg-eth0

NM_CONTROLLED=yes

PEERDNS=yes
DNS1=206.13.31.12
DNS2=68.94.156.1
DOMAIN=pacbell.net
ifcfg-eth0 (END
does anyone see anything wrong, questionable?
I have been using this at least through
f12, f14, f16
I can't recall where I got all of this, especially
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=yes
I don't know the meaning of, or the impact of either of these.

Above is consistent in that
my /etc/resolv.conf says Added by NetworkManager
For many years, I have been using static IP and
NETWORK=192.168.2.0
in contrast the imac is using DHCP
and network 192.168.1.0

------
This 10-digit key was first response I got from uverse on phone
after the uverse install.
At that time even the imac had no internet.
The uverse rep on phone had me go thru a
sequence of 2 things to set up wireless internet on the imac,
including giving him/her that 10 digit key, read off from side panel
of the uverse modem.
Then a day later I had another phone exchange with uverse
where at my request they led me through the steps on the imac
to turn off wireless (Airport) internet, and
to turn on wired internet, and the imac has wired internet since.
I suppose it remains possible,
that 10digit key encryption/authentication on the imac
is affecting my wired connection on my f16 box.
Seems unlikely but maybe?
---------------
Tim, I have yet to try your suggestion of
turning off both computers,
and then pull the power cable from uverse modem, wait,
and then put power cable back in, all with the computers turned off.
Will try this soon.
------------------
Had the worst/most frustrating uverse phone exchange
yesterday oct 3.
The rep was barely understandable, he finally got around to
to having me pull the power cable from uverse modem.
This had the effect of also cutting off our phone,
something I had not realized, that the uveerse bundle now
has our phone line subject to problems/disconnects of the
uverse modem.
And of course, even though the uverse rep had our phone number
which they dutifully take down every time we call,
"so that we can call you back in case of a disconnect",
he never did call back.
That uverse rep also seemed to know nothing about the
added 3 pieces of electronic gear that came with the uverse install,
so I don't yet know what they are, why such a mess needed.
When I crawl under my desk I can see a jumble of
1) aluminum? ~1ft square 2in high box-- a large 'W' on one face.
2) a grey plastic Belkin box ~8in square, 3in high-- another router?
3) a small vanilla box
All 3 I think are connected to the uverse modem.
there is an additional very thin green wire coming of somewhere
in that 3-box mess, that is also connected to the uverse modem.

Is there any command sequence to restart/stop/start NetworkManager?

I have already rebooted many times, no help.
My request on how to restart NetworkManager is
more out of desperation, in the mad hope that
kicking NetworkManager via "restart"
might make my f16 capable of not getting that DNS failed error.

Did anybody successfully install the proprietary Nvidia driver on Macbook Pro(EFI boot)?

Hi!
I am running fedora 17 on a Macbook Pro 6,2 with an integrated intel
and a nvidia graphic card,
lspci -v | grep VGA
gives:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 18) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce
GT 330M] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Unfortunately, there are two issues which the open source driver nouveau:
1. The laptop does not resume from suspend to ram after having been
connected to an external monitor, this is bug
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=858798
2. I intend to work with Nvidias CUDA framework and therefore have to
use their driver :(
I tried to use both the nvidia-graphics.x86_64e kmod-nvidia* package
from rpmfusion repo and the nvidia-graphics package from the atrpms repo.
Using standard boot options, the boot process seems to hang just
before gdm is started. Adding the kernel option nomodeset,
the monitor gets dark after the boot process and after having
connected a 2nd monitor I realized that actually the laptop monitor
light was completely switched off. Is there any possibility to switch
it on during the boot process?
Any ideas or experience how to get the Nvidia driver running?
Of course, any pointers or hints are very much appreciated!
Best,
Andre
