Understanding my network
by Arthur Dent
Hello all,
I am part-way through a bare-metal rebuild of my small home server (it
was F15, I am rebuilding as F17). This machine serves up my IMAP mail
with Dovecot and Squirrelmail and hosts my small (mainly static)
website.
The machine in question sits on my home network at 192.168.2.2. I have
opened port 993 on the firewall. I have a domain name (let's call it
example.org) with dyndns.org which points to my IP address (let's call
that 123.456.789.123) and my router forwards port 993 to 192.168.2.2.
So here's the thing - and I don't remember having this problem with F15
(or previous):
I can access my mail using a client on another machine in my network if
I configure it to use 192.168.2.2, but for my mobile devices I configure
the email client to point to example.org. If I am outside of my network
they can access mail fine, but if I am at home and they are connecting
via my own wi-fi... no joy...
The same by the way is true of SSH. Although I use a non-standard port
for SSH the principle is the same.
I have obviously messed up or missed out some configuration step, but I
can't understand where I have gone wrong.
Can anyone help me to fix this?
Thanks
Mark

No suspend on lid close
by Artifex Maximus
Hello!
I have Fedora 17 x86_64 installed on my Samsung N145Plus netbook.
Sometimes when I close the lid the machine keep on running instead of
suspend. I need to open and close the lid again to suspend. Any idea
why? Any solution?
Is there any good tutorial on how to lower the power consumption of my
netbook? I mean sysctl, proc, etc. settings. I had Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64
and laptop-mode-tools on this machine but I had problems then I
changed my OS to Fedora 17. Most of those problems gone but instead
7-9 hours I only get 2-4 hours on battery.

F17: Manual monitor adjustment required after each boot
by Corinna Vinschen
Hi,
since upgrading from F16 to F17, I have a weird problem with the
monitor settings on my desktop machine.
I'm using the nouveau driver. The controller is an Nvidia GeForce 7100
GS. The controller is somewhat older, it has one DVI and one VGA plug.
Attached are two LCD monitors running a single desktop spread over both
monitors.
Running under F16, everything worked as expected. With F17, every time
I boot the machine, the monitor attached to the VGA plug is wrongly
adjusted, but always in a different way. Sometimes it's just a bit off
and text on the screen is flickering. Sometimes the entire picture is
too wide, sometimes it's off to the right, or to the bottom, etc.
Either way, every morning I now have to press the magic key sequence
on the monitor to readjust the picture.
Did anybody encounter the same problem? Does anybody know how to fix
this, perhaps?
Thanks,
Corinna

To telnet or to netcat... that's the question
by NoSpaze
Hi. If I do:
# telnet 127.0.0.1 5038
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
Asterisk Call Manager/1.0
Action: Login
ActionID: 1
Username: youwanna
Secret: uwanna
... And asterisk responds:
== Manager 'youwanna' logged on from 127.0.0.1
But if I use nc and do...
# nc 127.0.0.1 5038 << EOF
> Action: Login
> ActionID: 1
> Username: youwanna
> Secret: uwanna
>
> EOF
Asterisk Call Manager/1.0
... Asterisk responds:
== Connect attempt from '127.0.0.1' unable to authenticate
Notice the TEXT is EXACTLY THE SAME (pasted in both cases) tried 762753 times or something less. Tcp port.
Why is that difference? Is nc sending a different string sequence or what?
TIA...

lines to /etc/my.cnf on tag [mysqld] with no luck (yes I restarted the
daemon):
long_query_time=0
general_log=1
general_log_file = /var/log/mysql.log
Any ideas?

f16 preupdate from f14, xfce logout error
by Jackson Byers
A few days ago I successfully got f16 installed
via preupdate from f14.
It came up in gnome i think but it wasn't too good,
even some warnings that I didnt capture.
Couldn't find logout panel for a long time,
seemed to be accessed on top row, on far right off screen.
Why isn't logout-restart in a more obvious place?
So I tried xfce via "yum groupinstall xfce"
That seemed to complete without error
but it seemed that I was still in gnome;
not sure now, but I think gnome persisted even with reboots.
I was/am mostly ignorant of any xfce details, how to start it.
Fumbled my way in the "Add/Remove Software"
and tried to get xfce working, which it did after
a reboot.
I had originally thought that doing just
"yum groupinstall xfce"
would be sufficient to get xfce operating but that does not
seem to be the case.
Is getting xfce to replace gnome, a multiple step process?
1)"yum groupinstall xfce"
2)"Add/Remove Software" and click on all or most all "xfce"?
When I finally got up in xfce,at least partially working,
I could not find the logout-restart panel.
I must have finally hit someething but it kept coming up
with a "failed-logout" message
and left me with a blank window
To try to fix I had to go to a console and
login and use "startx"
then xfce came up again but still couldn't find logout-restart panel.
Upshot: continually coming up with:
Failed to receive a reply from the session manager
The name org.xfce.SessionManager was not provided by any .service
files[root@f16a9 ~]#
any hints, help
would be appreciated

Google settings
by Timothy Murphy
Is it possible to change the google search settings in some way
so that only get sites changed in the last year are listed,
at least by default.
I know I can do this for one search by clicking on the Advanced icon,
but is there any way of making it the default?
Alternatively, is there any way of listing the search outcomes
by their age, with newer entries first?
Incidentally, is there any mailing list of forum
where one can ask googly questions like this?

As far as I know, the Big 2 are empathy and pidgin. Both use libpurple,
so I guess it depends on where the lockup is occurring.
FWIW, I'm using pidgin with F17 / XFCE and have seen no lockups from it.

Disconnect
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
The NetworkNamager provides a disconnect option. I undertand that it
can be manager through /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d
However, when I disconnect the ppp0 connection, ppp0 is already
down (due to the disconnect) and prevents me to collect information
through ifconfig.
How can I avoid this problem. I wish to collect information of the
ppp0 just before it is turned off.
Thank for your help.
Regards.
