[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? nc missing option -z

Hi, I used to use netcat to check if a particular host is up or if I have internet connection before I run a few scripts. I would use the -z option in particular. But now I see that has been removed: $ nc -z imap.gmail.com 993 && sync-my-email.sh ncat: invalid option -- 'z' Here is the excerpt from the old manual page: -z Specifies that nc should just scan for listening daemons, without sending any data to them. It is an error to use this option in conjunction with the -l option. Any ideas what happened to it? What can I use as replacement? Thanks for any ideas. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. Ranter or evangelist?

Why is it that, when I insert an audio disk, I see it as an audio disk on my desktop, but when I click it, GNOME shows the .wav files that are present. No application is suggested, even under "Open", to play the damned music. If I go to Application, sound and video, the first option, "Audio Player", opens XMMS. Great! I click the forward button... I'm presented with a list of the... no, no, no! not the files on the CD, but the files in my home directory!!! Wow, we're really moving forward! I painfully navigate to /media, there's nothing in /media. Let's check mtab, my DVD/CD is on sr0, I believe. Nope, nothing there. Well, if the intend was to scare away Mac and Windows users, I would think that the success rate is 100%. I've been using Linux for 8 years and even "I" am scared! I do understand Fedora is for geeks, but would it make their life that difficult if things kinda worked? Didn't anybody notice that the present set-up makes absolutely no sense? At least, normally, you should go to => System, Preference, File Management, Media to select a default CD and DVD player. Still impossible! No option to change anything. I wrote about this. Nobody replied. Who's responsible for setting things this way? Is anyboby responsible somewhere or is it "We do all this together in a haphazard way" ? If so, never expect any significant market share for Linux. Radio-Canada will continue to use Windows Media because "Linux is too hard for ordinary people" (MSFT trademark). You think I'm a ranter? I've been told this quite often. But, while some people write code, I write to the Quebec Press Council. I explain that a certain so-called journalist is just a Microsoft sycophant. Every time he used Windows Vista, of course, there were a few... almost bugs. but certainly no show stopper. With Linux, the question is more complex. When a new version of Firefox comes out, for instance, instead of waiting for the upgrade, he gets the executable at Mozilla and, then, everything gets really complicated. Of course, the Press Concil understands perfectly what's going on. I made sure my basic complaint was very easy to understand: I explained the journalist NEVER discussed the appropriateness for the State -- television, amongst others -- of using proprietary format and never discussed tied sales. That's it, that's all. Still, after counceiding that the Press organisation lawyers had well understood my POV, the Council judged that the journalist gives a lot of coverage to Linux -- they didn't elabore on the kind of coverage: they can't evaluate, of course -- and, you know, given that Linux hardly has 1% of the market share, they found the coverage was adequate. So, I filed an appeal... and sent a copy to the Professional Federation of Journalists... I got my appeal. But the fight is far from over. The Press Council is heavily subsidized by the employer of said journalist, and Radio-Canada, another member of the Microsoft club. Seeing subsidies vaporize scares the shit out of those learned men: they could lose their precious jobs! So, they'll try every trick in the book to give a very mild tone to their judgement. But I have a few other tricks in my book to set the records straight, though having the support from the Linux community would certainly help. Cause... do you really believe I got any help from local coders for this fight? I got none, absolutely NONE. Why? Cause I'm a ranter. In other words, though I am not a programmer, when I see things that are not done correctly, I say so. They tell me I should fix the bugs. Why is it that there are so many programmers and I can't even set a default application for reading CD and DVDs? While I'm alone to do what I consider my job, why is it that the whole community doesn't get its act together to do such simple things? Sometimes I wished I could proselytize in a more positive way. I'd like to tell Apple users that Linux equals or surpasses OS X in user friendlyness, but it doesn't. It was like this ten years ago, it is still like this now. Countrary to what we could think from the success of Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple, in the Linux world, the only people who count are programmers. They'll fix things... soon. But Linux is not so young anymore. After 18 years, it has 1% market share. I believe there are some organizational bugs that need to be ironed out. For now, from an administrative POV, Linux is a merry-go-round that doesn't make much sense. What do you say, am I a ranter or an evangelist? Is it good for Linux to be ruled by programmers, the alternative not being necessarily the marketing department? :) Red Hat has some clout. How come they don't say "We want a music player that first detects CD files and plays them" and accept to include them on the default CD only on this condition? Etc., etc., etc.

Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work with Fedora 11

Unrelated to topic: I lost quite a bit of messages downloading them from Altern to Thunderbird and not being able to upload afterwards* but I would like to thank Todd Zullinger for reminding me that welcome messages are not just a way for forums owner to be polite :) But somethimes, you have many things to read... * ping smtp.altern.org ping: unknown host smtp.altern.org This used to work, but not anymore, according to lantre.org. So, I'll have to set up a Gmail account. Later. ----------------------------- Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work I discovered a bug with the setting of my printer, an HP 1012. The configuration seemed really easy as it was identified correctly on a USB Port. A few clicks, and I was done. I didn't even check to see if it worked: I never had a problem setting this printer for years. Then, I tried to print and I had a message saying that the printer wasn't connected. Weird: CUPS was installed, the wire was OK. I went back to configuration and I saw there's an option for using HAL, the Hardware Abstraction Layer. I do believe HAL has always been part of setting my printer. So, I selected it but received the message that the HPIJS driver was not available. (Note that I tried the Gutenprint driver when the printer wasn't set to use HAL: it didn't work.) I installed hpijs, now everything is fine. I don't remember ever being asked to use HAL with another distro: it was always put to contribution, I suppose. So, there must be a way around this. Most newbies will never consider an option that isn't selected by default for a printer. Most probably other printers that use HPIJS have the same problem. Those that use ppd files, probably not.

Did I really install Kmod-Nvidia ?

There are all sorts of instructions as to how to install Kmod-Nvidia on Fedora, but I thought yum would do a better job of guessing my configuration (x86_64, 9400 GT) to get the most up-to-date correct package and getting everything right. So, I just typed: yum install kmod-nvidia Now, /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this: # Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AIGLX" "on" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection The file is only a few minutes old... So, I suppose it's a new config for the Kmod driver. But the process was so transparent, I can't help but wonder if all those modifications to the kernel that I read about in the doc have been made. If so, why not provide the documentation that all that is needed is to type the yum command? The Nouveau driver worked very well and, since I'm not too sure I'll install 3D, maybe I could have kept it. But my screen kept blanking once in a while for a few seconds. This happened with my previous computer too -- it had an old ATI card, the same monitor and a very standard open source driver for ATI -- but not so often and not for so long: it was just a quick blank. I thought this might fix the problem. Also, I intend to install a TV card and, it anything doesn't work, I'm sure the first suggestion from Nvidia will be to install their driver. As the material I buy is only on a one week money back guarantee, I prefer to make sure everything works in advance. Also, as it often happens when I download new packages, there was a socket error and a long (~ 1-2 min) halt before another server took over. (I forgot to save the console screen before I rebooted, but the name "liberty" was part of it.) After the installation finished, the rx/tx light of the modem began flashing very fast as if there was a download occuring... or maybe an upload if some information on the installation has to be sent back to rpmfusion or nvidia. No indication of what was going on appeared onscreen. Is this anything to be concerned about? Any idea What this transfer was about?

Hi all Fedora users, I have just joined this list. I am running the latest Fedora but I can't get my 3C900Combo networking card to work. I can see that the card is installed but no IP-address is asigned to it and I can't set it. So I think that there is a bug in that driver. Any other user out there who have a solution for this? RAGE XL Framebuffer

Hi all I know that is not a specific question about Fedora, but I can't find answer on the kernel mailing list. Is somebody having server with integrated ATI RAGE XL video card? Is it possible to patch the kernel to support this video card? If I add VGA=791 in my grub.conf, I will have a resolution of 1024x768 which is good, but the display is very slow (especially when the screen is scrolling). If I use I this: "video=aty128fb:1024x768@70" it will not work. I'm using kernel 2.4.22 but I will try 2.6.0-test11 today. If somebody has a patch, a link or anything else that can help me, it will be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Soundblaster

I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine) In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster is working fine In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig... Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but fine on a router/firewall. Tnx Antonio

WiFi permanently disappeared after booting test kernel

Hi, On my netbook I booted a test kernel 3.8.0-rc4+ I compiled. Now after booting back into my regular Fedora kernel 3.6.11-5.fc17.i686.PAE my wifi network device remains permanently disappeared. No wifi networks displayed in Network Manager gui. Also the Network Manager syslog messages make it look like the device has completely disappeared. Suggestions for restoring wifi welcome. losing WiFi Access - prompted for password

hibernate/suspend immediately resumes

Judging from the results of Google searches about this, this is a problem that has been around for a while, but I have not found a solution that works for my case. Most of the hits were on postings in the Ubuntu forums, and regarding pretty old versions of Ubuntu at that (which means they don't account for systemd, grub2, etc. if any of that comes into play). So I thought I would ask here on the Fedora list. This is for a brand-new machine with an ASUS Z-87 motherboard, Intel i5 Haswell processor (4 core, 64-bit) and fully updated F19 (64-bit). The problem is that when doing a suspend or hibernate, the process completes, but almost immediately the system resumes again. In the case of hibernation, I have tried forcibly powering it off when the resume starts. In that case, when I power it on again, the hibernated image loads, but then the system hangs and never completes the resume. Just for completeness, the system also has a Windows 7 64-bit installed OS, and that one is able to suspend and hibernate just fine, which would seem to rule out hardware issues. The solutions I found for Linux were of two types: disabling ACPI wakeups (using "acpitool -W") and "unbinding" USB drivers (not sure what that even means). I've tried both approaches with no success. More details: I spent an entire evening last night fiddling with this with no success, so I really REALLY don't want anyone coming back and saying I haven't done my homework, or do some Google searches you idiot, etc. (unless you can point me to the exact Google search I need to do). The others show up as "disabled" after doing this, but hibernate/suspend still resumes immediately even after doing this. This does not work either. The most aggravating thing is that I have another machine built from the same hardware, and suspend/hibernate works fine on that one, without any of this being necessary. So it may well come down to determining exactly which drivers need to be unbound. The machine that doesn't work does have a couple of additional cards in it (that provide extra USB ports and some Firewire ports) which suggests the driver for one of those cards is causing the problem. The original script wanted to unbind everything that had *hci* in the name, but I found that if "ahci" was unbound, then I could no longer access anything on the disk, and I had to push the reset button to recover; maybe that is the hard disk driver. So I can't just try unbinding everything. Anything that can point me in the right direction here is greatly appreciated. --Greg

Hello, After a failed attempt to install the manufacturer's nvidia driver, my system (Fedora 19, with both Gnome and KDE, on a Lenovo ThinkPad T430) does not reach the graphical login screen any more, but instead ends up in a white screen with a frowning computer cartoon and the message "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator." I can still do Ctrl-Alt-F2 to log into text mode. When I try startx, I get an empty screen with white or black background and a mouse cursor, extending over my two screens (laptop and external). When I try startkde it says: $DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to X server. The only error in /var/etc/X11.0.log is: Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0) In /var/log/messages, there are a bunch of lines like (I'm typing by hand): gnome-session[2658]: (gnome-shell:2949): Cogl-WARNING **: ./driver/gl/cogl-framebuffer-gl.c:561: GL error (1282): Invalid operation Could not find a solution on Google. I already reinstalled a bunch of packages, including cogl, gdm, gnome-shell, @kde-desktop, xorg-x11-drv-nouveau, kernel, but no change. Any advice? Thanks! [OT] Open Source monitoring tools

I've been out of IT for almost 4 years dealing with some pretty serious medical issues (6 surgeries on my feet in 20 months along with elbow and knee surgeries) and I want to see how much has changed. Before I left IT I used Nagios and BB for network monitoring, but want to see if there is anything new that could replace those in my arsenal or are they still some of the elite software out there. Things change so fast in IT, I want to be sure I'm up to date on all the options and opinions on those options from those who weren't on a sabbatical. I would appreciate any input you might have. install to disk for another system

I'm looking for strategies that support installing fedora to a removable disk that will then be removed to run in another system. Ideally this will be automated (as opposed to clicking on 'Next' buttons like the standard anaconda install from CD). Basically I'm picturing something like: - set up partitions / filesystems based on some config file - install packages from local repository - post-package configuration (e.g., configure etc files) - remove disk, insert another, repeat This sounds very kickstart-ish, but kickstart is usually used to install onto storage on the actual target system. I want to install to a disk in a separate machine, then move the disk to the target system. This might even be an installation for a target system that is not the same architecture as the installer system. Fire away. What solutions are out there?

Laptop screen blank when using second monitor

Hello, Until this morning, my Lenovo Thinkpad T430 running KDE on Fedora 19 was working fine sitting on a base with a second monitor attached. I removed it from the base and connected another second monitor (a projector) and things were still fine. When I put it back into the base, the laptop screen went blank, and it was using only the second screen. When I remove it from the base, it uses the built-in screen, but as soon as I put it into the base, it only uses the second screen. Interestingly, when I restart, it uses both screens properly until after I log in. Any advice? Thanks! Installing NVIDIA Driver on Lenovo ThinkPad T430

Hello, I'm having some problems with using dual monitors on my Lenovo ThinkPad T430 with Fedora 19 and KDE and want to see if installing the manufacturer provided driver helps. This laptop has two GPUs: - Intel Integrated HD Graphics - Discrete NVIDIA NVS 5400M (1 GB VRAM) with Optimus Technology So I want to install the driver provided by NVIDIA for 64-bit Linux. I tried http://forums.if-not-true-then-false.com/index.php/topic,595.0.html where step 5d caused some warning or error I did not understand and step 5e failed saying you can not install the kernel module except on top of a driver configuration. Firefox - gedit is the best!

Why, Firefox on Fedora 19 wants to open all different sort of files of well known types with gedit? It's ridiculous that torrent files, zip and gz archives and even doc file are suggested to be opened with gedit. Creating new FF profile doesn't resolve this issue. Is it that hard to recognize file type and open it with correct application? Now, you can slaughter me but Firefox on Windows suggests apps correctly so it's more likely Fedora related bug. F19: "yum groups mark convert" problem

Like suggest from "yum groupremove 'Cinnamon desktop' (why I must run this command?), I have run 'yum groups mark convert', at the end the command have show 'Converted old style groups to objects.' and all seem work fine. But now, if I run 'yum update', the system want download and install 1,6 Gb of software! latest F19 version of openssl breaks ssh on i686 machine with old CPU

I have an old i686 machine with a Cyrix M II CPU which is (barely) capable of running Fedora. The latest version of openssl (openssl-1.0.1e-28.fc19.i686) breaks incoming and outgoing ssh. Outgoing fails with the error "Illegal instruction (core dumped)" (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1022346 ). I installed the necessary debuginfo packages to get a stack trace from the core file (see the bug). I guessed that the problem has to do with my CPU not supporting the NOPL instruction, but can't tell from the stack trace. Has anyone else had similar trouble with old CPUs, and is there any other information that would be useful to collect? The maintainer hasn't responded so far.

Sharing EFS / EFI partition between Windows 8 and Fedora 20

Hello! I've installed Fedora 20 on a Asus N550jv with no apparent issues. Thing is, I accepted Anaconda's suggestion of having two EFS / EFI partition, one for Windows (left untouched) and other for Fedora. It is done, installed but... sounds messy. Questions: 1- What are the advantages of having two EFS / EFI partitions? I know some UEFI allow for one boot entry only per partition, thus forcing to choose between Windows or Linux and leaving one with no way to boot again the other; is that the only advantage of having two EFS? I also know Windows 7 installer seems to balk when it sees two EFS; I'd venture a guess Windows 8 has fixed this, can anyone confirm? 2- Any quick way to test if it would break, on my particular machine, to have just one EFS with both Windows and Linux EFI boot files? Maybe add two similar Windows boot entries and see if one of them disappears after I boot Windows? Thanks in Advance! -- Pedro

Hi; In Gnome there used to be a facility for establishing your favourite program for basic functions. Example, to call up a specific browser when you clicked on a link. I used to use Firefox as my main browser set to start on startup in its own workspace. I would also choose "Web" (formerly Epiphany) as my favourite so whenever I clicked a link not in Firefox, Web would open in the workspace where I was working for a quick search. How now in Gnome 3 can I set this favourite or preferred Browser to Web? [P.S. I have never found a Gnome help site that actually answers questions or gives help. Fedora 19 screensaver

Since updating last week the Fedora 19 screensaver is causing me grief. I have it off and time delay set to never but it blanks the screen and defaults to a time display after 30+ minutes , on any key press it gives the login dialog which cannot be accessed either by tab key or mouse so there is no way to log in. Ctrl Alt F2 gives me a new user I log in as me and startx to bring up gnome then shut down and restart. Googling shows it's difficult to get rid of the screensaver. That's half the problem and raises a peripheral question. I am developing an app on Heroku. Have had access until Tuesday evening at which time starting heroku produces 30 of the below errors. Same in accessing Heroku logs. Can it be that in starting a new login and desktop it messed up access to ssh keys and could this be the cause of the heroku error regime. If so what can be done to resolve the issue? If not, what then? I have posted on Github as heroku requires. I note on Github there are an increasing number of similar complaints and google is rife with these also. What's the difference if any between my pc's ssh keys and the rsa-keygen keys? in the .ssh directory? I generated a new rsa.pub key and entered that in Heroku but it did not resolve the issue. Can yum resume??

As I reported this morning, `yum --releasever=18 distro-sync' told me when I got to it "killed." Just that (on a line by itself). No hint of when, why, how, nor anything else. Can I get to start back up from where it left off, instead of from the beginning? The man page is not just hard to read (as usual) but downright confusing. Should I try 'yum redo' or 'yum history redo'? Hi Gang: I called journalctl and got two lines that sparked a question: Parsing /etc/bluetooth/input.conf failed: No such file or directory Oct 17 15:17:36 localhost.localdomain bluetoothd[502]: Parsing /etc/bluetooth/serial.conf failed: No such file or directory Should I be creating a bluetooth directory and perhaps touching the files: input.conf and serial.conf? Hi, I am the current maintainer of the emacspeak package, and have been for a long time. However I have never really used the package so I don't know how well it works. F18: Bind-chroot & Dovecot mount errors, how to fix?

I at one time installed bind with chroot but decided to remove the bind-chroot package but it did not clean up and remove chroot mounts so I manually removed the chroot mounts, reconfgured bind, restarted named, with no apparent errors. FC19, 3.11.6-200, and ATI video

I've just updated a user's FC19 box to the latest. No X. Period. I can use xinit to get a window, but no fonts at all. Startx from init 3 gives me a black screen. When I look at Xorg.0.log, no matter if I have the radeon driver blacklisted or not, whatever driver it uses is not for this kernel. The proprietary one fails to build - as a start, it's still using create_proc_entry. The box has a FirePro 2260. What can I do to get my user up and running, other than, say, installing CentOS...? mark -- grub2 MUST DIE!!!

Got myself in a bind

I'm running F19 with all the latest updates. I did something as a normal user that has made my system unusable. I'm running the mate desktop and here are the issues I'm having: 1) No applets in the notification area except the date/time applet. 2) Only one of 2 Ethernet interfaces comes up. Even after rebooting. 3) The only desktop I can use is Mate, there is no option for me to choose something else. 4) Why is one network interface labeled em1 and the other enp4s4? What I did that may have caused the problem is to change the name of the network interface as shown in nm-applet. nm-applet showed the name as enp4s4 while ifconfig showed it as p5p1. After I did this I could no longer get that interface to start. I tried deleting the interface and adding it back in and I still could not get the interface to come up. In fact at some point in time after stopping and restarting Network Manager the p5p1 interface no longer showed up in nm-applet. Finally I killed nm-applet assuming it would restart, but nothing happened. I tried to add the notification area back in, but this doesn't work. I can click on add to panel and select the notification area and click on add, but nothing happens. I even tried logging in as a different user and there was no nm-applet in the notification area. Running ps showed nm-applet to be running as the user id I was logged in as, but it didn't show up in the notification area. So how the F*** do I get the notification area restored? and how the F*** do I get Network Manager to see and configure both network interfaces? Of course I can re-install F19 and re-download all the updates, but I hope there is a better way than that. Paolo

Bit of a problem

I have a HD with 2 partitions. Ubuntu 13.04 on one, primary boot is through ubuntu grub and Fedora 19 on partition 2 which I use all the time. Ubuntu13.04 ran into a problem yesterday during software update, it lost the internet connection and errors out with a dialog to say internet connection is lost. I tried it again this morning with same result after checking the internet and ensuring connection with fedora and ubuntu on eth0. I do not understand why ubuntu loses internet during update when it can download files and emails ok. Ubutnu 13.04 has problem for me, I have run all the cleanups and tests and run only the minimum of apps and there are no errors reported, but it takes >30 seconds to start a terminal and another 50 seconds before the prompt appears. Because Fedora 19 is booted from the ubuntu grub partition I am reluctant to reinstall a fresh ubuntu because if it trashes Fedora I have major hassles re installing Rails and Drupal which are day projects on both linuxes. Is there any way I can change the boot to Fedora? I am seriously considering reverting ubuntu to 12LTS which my daughters run without a problem. Will it be safe as in not trashing Fedora to do a fresh U-LTS install, are there any gotchas I need to be aware of? Does anyone else experience difficulties with Ubuntu 13.04? fedora19 cups 1.6.4 released Oct 11 broke printer

I print from Mac OS 10.8.x to a Fedora 19 print server using hplip and the latest cups upgrades broke printing. The output is severely stretched and large and some pictures are black. Reverting to cups 1.6.2 using: yum downgrade cups cups-filesystem cups-lpd cups-libs cups-ipptool cups-devel fixed the problem. I would have gone back to the previous release cups 1.6.3 but yum downgrade seems to have picked the base fedora 19 cups not a previous update. Core file location and abrt

I'd like to ensure core files go to a local partition rather than the default location ($HOME), which is network-mounted in my case. Googling a bit, I found this: https://access.redhat.com/site/solutions/61536 In light of that, a few questions... Does this still apply to abrt in Fedora 19? That page suggests that when abrt is in use, core files would be generated in the location set by abrt, which defaults to /var/spool/abrt. However, I have abrtd running and I'm definitely getting core files in $HOME. Does abrt just make a copy to put in /var/spool/abrt? Might my problem be resolved as simply as telling abrt not to make a copy? I'd be fine with just having the core files in /var/spool/abrt. Otherwise, I imagine I'd like them somewhere named /var/users/$USER/dump (or similar). How do I do that and continue to play nicely with abrt? -- Braden McDaniel <braden(a)endoframe.com>

Can't boot Live from USB - unknown fs type, can't mount root

Hello, I downloaded Fedora 19 Live CD and copied it to a USB flash drive via dd. When I try to boot from it on a Lenovo Thinkpad T430s, I do get a screen that says that Fedora Live CD is going to load, but then it fails. The first error message I see is: kernel: SQUASHFS error: unable to read id index table Then, some lines later, I get several lines that say: dracut-mount[361]: mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_snapshot_cow' and then: dracut-mount[361]: Warning: Can't mount root file system And then I seem to be in a "dracut emergency shell" Any ideas? Juvenile BASH question

This may sound like a rather juvenile BASH question, but I'm rather stumped and hope it's something simple to fix. I hope someone has the answer since I don't really have time (swapping out firewalls and half my network is down) to research it. I have a BASH script that is pretty simple, it backs up postgresQL databases using pg_dump. It runs as root since I am copying data to a SAN and don't really want to configure the postgres user to have access to it. But, in order to get everything dumped properly, I do this: su postgres - -c <pgdump command> Now, this has worked perfectly for 3 months now, but the last few days I started getting errors about failed authentication to the databases. Here's where it gets weird. I can su postgres - from a BASH prompt just fine,but when I run the script, it asks me for a password, which it didn't do before. IIRC, I had to change the postgres user from /bin/false to /bin/bash for one of our software devs to be able to monitor the DBs via Jenkins, could that have something to do with it? I can't imagine how, since I can su from the root prompt to the postgres user without asking for a password. Help! Greetings, I have a fedora 17 x86_64 box with abiword 2.8.6 installed via RPM in /usr/local/bin Yesterday I decided to try for a moment, just for the fun of it, abiword 3.0 from source. I ended up with a binary in /usr/local/bin/abiwowrd. Hello, I have a Lenovo T430 that had Windows 7 Pro pre-installed, but I wiped out Windows and installed Fedora 19 instead (actually, I first installed Ubuntu and then Fedora). Now I want to turn it into a dual-boot machine with Fedora and Windows based on the license for the pre-installed Windows. I see on the web some recommendations to first install Windows, and some say you can install first Linux and then Windows, but it may not work for (some?) pre-installed versions. So, now I'm wondering whether I should first wipe out Fedora and then put first Windows and second Fedora, or whether I should try to keep Fedora and add Windows next to it? F19 --> F18 feasible?

My old Thinkpad T30 (on which I ran fedup from F18 to F19) is beginning to seem like more effort than it's worth, ever if eventual success of the effort were a sure thing. Is there a FedDown lurking out there somewhere? Will an install DVD for F18 (preferably one with both gnome and xfce4) let me treat the installation as if it were an upgrade, and preserve my data and tweaks? I'm sitting here watching F19 try to downgrade itself to F18, with screenful after screenful flashing by. I know that, if/when it completes, it will tell me how many rpms it means to change; what I want, though (out of admittedly idle curiosity), is the number of all the rpms on the whole machine. Hi, An upgrade to Thunderbird 24 (Fedora 19) broke integration with Gnome Shell notification mechanism. Currently the notification are displayed using the default Thunderbird notification mechanism instead of the Gnome Shell one (as it has worked with Gnome 3 since I remember). virtualized guest use only 2 cores

Not sure if it is Fedora/KVM problem, but: I'm trying virtualize MS Win7 Pro 64 guest under Fedora 19 x86_64 host. In virt-manager I allocated 4 cores (host machine has Xeon E3-1230 CPU with 8 cores incl. hyperthreading) to guest. But after installation guest OS uses only two cores - as report its task manager and OS properties info page. But what is weird, its device manager report all cores (see attached picture - where I increased no. of cores to 6, again without increased number of used cores). Guest OS should support up to 4 cores, according to manufacturer: http://technet.microsoft.com/cs-CZ/library/cc794868.aspx But from this referenced URL it seems as they are considering hyper-v as virt. supervisor - maybe then this result be some KVM problem or nature? Evolution - keeps losing mail filters

Hello, I'm using evolution 3.8.5 on F19, and for the third time now, in as many days, it has suddenly 'lost' all my incoming mail filters. I have no idea why it happens, all I see is a yellow banner saying: Mail filters automatically updated. The filter rule "Xymon" has been modified to account for the deleted folder "Xymon". The folder name (here 'Xymon') changes for each of the filters I have. The filters actually still exist, but they now do nothing. They previously all moved mail into various folders, and it is the location of those folders that has been removed from the filters. My mail is still all present, and the folders exist. I can read new mail in the folders so I do not know why it thinks they are deleted. I can, of course, add the filters back in, but I have 20 or so filters so it takes a bit of time. I have been using evolution with no problems since upgrading to F19 a couple of months ago. As said, this has only just started happening. Has anyone else seen this recently? Suspension problem last 2 days

I've been having a problem on my Thinkpad T61 for the last 2 days. In fact since "yum update" installed kernel-PAE-3.11.1-200.fc19.i686, though that is probably a coincidence. The problem is that when the laptop lid is closed and then opened later the machine is in a confused state. For example it is impossible to shutdown the machine except by pressing the power button for 10 seconds. I just wondered if anyone else has had similar symptoms recently? F19: Issues with PDF-XChange Viewer + WINE

Hello, I'm unable to properly run PDF-XChange Viewer [1] in Fedora 19 x86_64, under WINE 1.7.2. When a changed PDF is saved twice or more, the program crash. E.g., try to highlight some in this PDF [2], save it, highlight some other text and then save again. I've just signaled this to WINE Bugzilla ( http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34617) but I'm not sure if this is a problem of WINE or WINE+Fedora. What is your experience? Thank you very much! Weird yum or rpm effect since some days in F19

Hi all, having a very weird effect since some days: installing a new package with yum or rpm inside a gnome3-session resets the gnome-shell some seconds after the installation has been done (the screen flickers, window frames disappear and re-appear, like a gnome-shell restart). Sometimes, the gnome3 session crashes so it loggs out (with the "oh, no, something..." screen). This happens too in a gnome-classsic session. No such effect inside other session types (mate for example) Anybody sees this too? Hi, I've just updated F19 and after reboot I do not get the usual kdm login screen. The graphic screen with the F stays there forever. I can login in text mode and run 'startx' and I get to the normal KDE session. Excluding devices from udev rules?

I've been trying to set up rules suggested by powertop to be applied by default. Unfortunately, the wireless mouse receiver gets shut down randomly when the usb powerdown rules are applied to it -- so I tried excluding it from the udev rule: ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}!="046d", ATTRS{idProduct}!="c529", TEST=="power/control", ATTR{power/control}="auto" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}!="046d", ATTRS{idProduct}!="c529", TEST=="power/autosuspend", ATTR{power/autosuspend}="2" For some reason that doesn't work.. udevadm test ... clearly shows that the rule matches. I've tried matching only by idProduct and still same result... is != just broken?

Thunderbird unread message count

Has anyone else had problems with Thunderbird showing incorrect unread-message counts on IMAP folders since the last TB update (in the past week or so)? I don't see any bugs reported on it in the Fedora bugzilla. I'm using dovecot as the IMAP server. I shoved an sd card into the computer to save something to it, and failed as it was write-protected; I decided to email the file to the device I wanted it on. As this was taking place, the computer was going through an upgrade and needed rebooting. At the encryption password I decided that I couldn't wait and pulled the SD card out. After doing this, as anyone can guess, the dracut command line came up, and thinking of it now, I should have left it rather than entering the reboot command. Do I need to do anything to correct any problems that I may have?

Hello, when I do man exp10, it appears that this function should be in the math library. However, when I look inside /usr/include/math.h, there is no function like exp10! I'm printing to a Samsung ML-1660 B/W printer. Since that cups version update, the gray parts of my document are signifinatly darker printed than with the previous cups version, and the gray areas are not smoothly printed. I have the impression that the color management now fails in cups. Anybody has similar problem? All comments are welcome. Yesterdays update

Hi Yesterday evening got updates to f19, somethin 900M. Update went smoothly, but reboot didn't manage. Again got that Plymouth stuck. Renamed /var/log/journal Journal.org and got things working again. Now I disabled plymouth in start, adding to kernel line plymouth.enable=0. All working fine, now question, where and why we need this Plymouth? Because of candy? First feeling was, that f19 started little bit smoother without plymouth. Ofcource my computer is somewhere 2007 intel "dual" core wit 2G ram, so should work still. Using Xfce4 as wm.... Jarmo

"Copy To" & "Move To" options missing in Dolphin & Konqueror

Hello Everyone I recently moved my old ~/.kde directory out of the way because of issues that I was having. Those problems are now fixed :) But I just noticed that the "Copy To" & "Move To" options are not in the right click context menus anymore. I can't even find where to configure it... I should say that the options to configure that are no longer where they USED to be... Any help you can give me on getting this feature back is greatly appreciated. Steven P. Ulrick

I don't have any fingerprint reader connected to my machine. Why is systemd starting this useless daemon in this case? I've heard somewhere that systemd tends to be more intelligent version of sysvinit that does only what is really needed to save time and system resources. Status of Samsung F2FS support?

Hi there, I wonder what is the current status with regards to Samsung F2FS boot support. When I first heard about F2FS I thought it'd be a nice solution to finally be able to get a full R/W Linux installed on a pen drive, without tricks like ram drives... So far, I haven't seen a Linux distro that allows placing /boot /root and /home into a F2FS filesystem. The ideal scenario would be to boot an install ISO from one pen drive, and create a permanent installation on a second pen drive inserted into another port, then afterwards boot from that second F2FS formatted drive... How to keep an old kernel?

I'm running Fedora-19/KDE on a Thinkpad T61. I had serious problems with hibernation when kernel-3.11 first came on the scene. Things have slightly improved now, but I still occasionally have what seems like the same problem, one symptom being that I cannot shutdown except by pressing the power button. In any case, I have one 3.10 kernel in my three grub kernels. I'm yum-updating with exclude=kernel* to avoid losing this kernel. we are testing a 3D printer, with Marlin driver.With Repitiert Host at first test we didn't get any connection with 250000 baud rate.From googling around I am confused if 250000 baud can be accepted by Fedora (I think so) Printer works fine in Windows with same baud rate.Are we missing some point?? F19 : getting to GUI (or anywhere)

I have F19 on a T30 Thinkpad, installed by fedup from F18 (which ran fine), and running xfce4 with some software from Gnome and KDE (such as gnome-terminal) also installed. The display has elephantiasis, as if it were on a screen big enough to cover the room wall. It is a deep reddish brown (on black), and hard to see despite the absurd magnification. It's also way slow, at least when I use its own keyboard and mouse. I have my desktop PC connected to it over ssh -Y; it seems to respond at a normal rate here. (But, despite the -Y, I can't get to any display other than a terminal, on the PC any more than on the laptop. Or, maybe, I just don't know how.) . Different results with Fedora 19 and older nvidia card

Booted machine from livecd image, and the gnome3 worked. Used Fedup to upgrade an Fedora 18 setup to Fedor 19, and gnome3 doesn't work (Opps screen), but KDE and Xfce does. Did a clean install from the DVD image of Fedora 19 to a new hard disk, and gnome3 doesn't work, kde regular doesn't work, kde failsafe works, and xfce works. The machine has a nvidia geforce FX 5200 card, which I know is old, but that is what my classroom has in all 20 machines. So, not just a matter of getting a different card. Long ago was using the nvidia driver from there site, but they dropped support for the older cards, so had to switch to the nouvea driver. Any suggestions, or just have to stick with xfce.. Strange error message

I update my Fedora 19 every morning. Booting up over the last 3 weeks pops up a peculiar error message: Software update failed to complete The dialog says: Failed To Update the off line update failed in an unexpected way Detailed errors from PackageManager follow: The transaction did not complete. /var/log/messages shows nothing of note. /var/log/boot.log has one error: [FAILED] Failed to start Wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit. I am referring to Bill Oliver's essay that appeared under the "Fedora = "the darker side of the Internet?"" thread, just recently. I just wanted to say how wonderfully well-expressed this essay was. It is widely applicable and should be required reading for "gurus" in ever-so-many areas. (There are many contributors to the R-help mailing list to which I subscribe who would benefit from taking this essay to heart.) I hope that Harald Reindl reads it and takes it to heart. I have no patience with those on this list who slang off at Harald. He is a brilliant guy and provides a great service to the Fedora community. Hello, I installed OOolatex on my fedora 19 i686 but the equation edition fails (from libreoffice): BASIC runtime error. Property or method not found: getDocumentInfo. I tried to contact: Geoffroy Piroux (gpiroux(a)gmail.com) But I did not get any response. So I have been on the website: http://ooolatex.sourceforge.net/ where the rpm is supposed to come from, and tried to download the package, but there is not tar or any sort of package here (only fonts). f19netinst boots but no X-windows, only black text screen

OCT10 2013 finally got my f19netinst booting! This used the .iso in: menuentry 'Fedora 19 netinst' { linux /vmlinuz-install stage2=hd:/dev/sda9:root/Fedora-19-i386-netinst.iso initrd /initrd.img-install } BUT no X-windows yet. I am still stuck in that black text-only screen and I don't knw how to proceed. I also had/have difficulty in accesing the ctrl-alt-F2 which seems to be necessary to login. I often had to hit power button and reboot to be able to login. so far all I have done is explore what has been installed by using "yum list installed" or "yum list installed |grep -i xorg" for example /tmp is missing .X0-loc there many xorg, many chrome. Assuming I can get get X-windows going I would like to switch to xfce. My experience on installing new fedora versions is limitad to: 1)hard disk install using the dvd.iso, and using repo= 2)preupgrade neither of which left me in text mode, so I don't have any idea how to proceed here. Any help much appreciated Jack

new acer, no mouse?

Hi Gang, The new computer just arrived (FINALLY!!!! after about 4 weeks) installed Linpus, without X, or X didn't boot up straight away - instead it booted root. I rewrote the hard drive with our software and when getting up with the recognisable Fedora 9 GUI I find that the mouse-pad doesn't work. Can one of you fine people please let me know the keyboard combinations to get into the system settings? Wait! I can get there with a command, can't I? but how do I get there in the GUI? I created an azvuze.service to automate restarts (during the night) Sometimes openjdk stays, sometimes crashes out. If it stays, it prevents restart. by either service file, manually typing # azureus. What happened to my printer!?!

Hello all, Sometime in the last couple of weeks, I lost my ability to print to the office printer. If I check (KDE) System Settings, the printer's status reads, "Paused - 'Unable to connect to CIFS host after (tried 3 times)'". Everybody else can still use this printer, and there have been no major network reconfiguration events recently. I can't figure out how to bring this back online. I tried to simply re-add the long-existing printer again, but the "Add a New Printer" dialog won't let me browse the network for any printers at all. The [Browse] button under "Windows Printer via SAMBA" is greyed out, so I would have to type the URI by hand. But the URI is correct in the configuration of the current, non-working, printer, as far as I know. Is there any way to figure out why the current printer is offline, beyond "Unable to connect"? Not being able to print is really messing with my workflow. -Alan

Fedora 19: qtconfig has no "Oxygen" option

I installed a new Gnome F19 desktop. qtconfig has no "Oxygen" option. Why? qtcreator itself looks great, but when I build and run Qt4 apps, they look terrible. On F15 I ran Qt4 apps under Gnome3, and didnt' have this problem.

Basically, all I want to be able to do is plug the device into my network, and then plug 2-3 additional fedora boxes into the 4ports I've disabled the dhcp settings on the box: -set the static ip of the box to be 192.168.5.200 -set the gateway to be 192.168.5.254 -set the dns to be 8.8.8.8 (google) -turned off every filter I could find -plug the computers/main eth into the lan ports only the network for this system/test already uses dhcp on 192.168.5.x the 1923.168.5.200 isn't used so using it for the box should be ok. the issue I have, is that I can only see one of the boxes when I plug both in, as if there's a conflict of some sort. Pluging one or the otther works, so I know the boxes/eth cards are ok. I am trying to do a remote install of Fedora 19 using an iso on the /home directory (/dev/sda2). The only thing I have found during my searches is setting /dev/root up for a cdrom/dvd. Currently the computer is running Centos 6.4. Kernel 3.11.2-201 rebooting issue

I just installed the latest kernel, and subsequently the latest akmod-nvidia drivers from testing. Whenever I boot into XFCE and then choose to reboot, it goes to a black screen which says "rebooting," but it hangs there. If anybody can point me to a fix...thanks ahead of time...

Installed wireless NIC, cannot configure...

I swapped a USB wired nic for a PCI one last night in my Fedora machine last night. The wireless card (Linksys WMP54G PCI) is recognized by the machine, I see the kernel modules (rt61pci + others) loaded and I can see in /var/log/messages that the hardware's present. But I can't get NetworkManager to setup the card. I've rebooted the machine and was able to get nm-connection-editor to let me create a new connection based on the mac address of the card. But every time I try to bring it up I get an I/O error. I know the card works: I took it from a machine that was working perfectly on the network. But I'm not sure of how to proceed with getting the card configured in an already setup machine. Any recommendations are appreciated. -- Darryl L. I have a classroom that currently has Fedora 17, and tested a machine booting from the livecd via flash and the gnome3 worked? I then upgraded a machine to fedora 19, and gnome classic, KDE, and xfce work, but the gnome comes back with an error. The is also openbox, but it comes up with a blank screen, but clicking will bring up a menu and then seems to work? Gnome come up with this error, and goes back to the login screen. Oh no! Something has gone wrong. With a notebook had an issue, but setting up dmlight fixed that problem, but did the same here, and still same results. I installed fc19 on an a55m-e motherboard with builtin hd7000 gpu on boot screen has garbage at login; fiddling around gets me past login to gnome. the display is unusable; no text on icons, screen flashing, etc booting into fc14 no problems; runs fine what is wrong? TIA rfjones

Hi. Looking at a trying to work/walk through a problem. I have a gearman daemon/server app running on a master machine. The master gearman process places the jobs on the queue as a background process, ie it doesn't wait for a return from the worker/child app. I also have 10-20 client machines, that are workers/children of the master gearman process. All of the machines are connected, via ssh (bidirectional). The local/client machines/apps can easily recieve the jobs from the master process. However, I'm considering an issue where I want the client processes to be able to return their results back to the master when the client apps have completed their work. So, as far as I can tell, I've got a couple of potential approaches: --I can have the client push the returned data back to the master system, via ssh, where I invoke a remote process running on the master system --I could implement a webservice kind of approach and pass the returned packets back via the service -I was wondering if it wwould be possible to have each client app also act as a gearman master app, with all the client apps running on the same localhost/port, and then using the ssh forwarding process, have all the clients be received by an app running as a worker on the masterside. The masterside would have to have the ssh tunneling/forwarding setup to "listen" to the same port on all of the client systems... (Is this even possible, without conflicts??) I ran a short test with two different clients and a 3rd master app to listen/process the work/jobs, and got a port conflict error, but it could have been due to something not being configured correctly. Hi, i setup a FTP server on our local development server. So as a developer i can upload and modify websites structure in development steps. everything works well except for 1 thing. - ftp root is /var/www/html in this directory i have several other directories like /joomla, /magento etc... in existing directories, i can easily create new subdirectories and files. however, under the ftp root so under /var/www/html i'm not able to create a new directory. i check the user it is the same as the other directories owner (/joomla, /magento, ..) so what am i doing wrong ? thx. While updating my Fedora 19 system today using check-update I discovered this: ** Found 1 pre-existing rpm db problem(s), 'yum check' output follows: cronie-1.4.10-7.fc19.i686 is a duplicate with cronie-1.4.10-6.fc19.i686 [root@localhost frank]# It seems a few weeks ago Yum attempted to update cronie. as I recall it failed because of a script problem in the package. I tried it a second time and seemingly it installed. But now I have the duplicate problem. What's the best way to resolve this ? Thanks

Unattended install right from the ISO boot to a working SSH login?

Is there a way to make Fedora install unattended, right from the boot until I can SSH into it?. I'd like being able to boot a new Virtualbox virtual machine right from the Fedora XFCE ISO, and then from the Virtualbox host, ssh into the brand new VM client and customize it using SSH shell scripts (SU, yum install, etc). Is there any way to tweak the ISO to specify "unattended install" and the root password (to be later changed after VM is installed).? The main idea is turning this into a bash script so I can download whatever new Fedora version and to the VM install "automagically". Thanks in advance. when I want to share files in a easy way, I was used to Personal Files Sharing. I've installed Fedora 19 on a HP Proliant ML 110 server. It has run an ownCloud CentOS testinstallation but should now be used for something else so I reinstalled. This has proved easier said than done, litterally. After installation I get an update for some 500+ files, and this seems to seriously fubar the system. It looks and behaves like this bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=789758 I haven't tried the solutions yet, prolly need to reinstall as now it takes ages and ages to reboot (I killed the thing with the power switch). On CentOS I simply get kernel panics after *that* update, which is why I switched to Fedora to see if it was something local to CentOS (and still RH derivative). I'm going to leave the system booting, now hopefully it's up after lunch in an hour or so (it's at the blue "f" icon at boot atm). Meanwhile, any ideas what's going on? -- Regards, Martin S

I also have a cron job which checks for kernel updates every hour and sends me a message if an updated kernel has been installed. I'm running F19 on a T30 thinkpad, upgraded iirc by means of fedup from F18 (which ran fine). Boot messages seem fairly normal (apart from being faint and red- shifted), until they reach sendmail. I get "Started ....Agent" followed (on the same line, not a new line) by "Starting ....Client ..." Gimp text tool crashes

I can reproduce this 100% by either trying to scroll for a font or selecting something else than the default a couple of times. Extremely annoying, anyone else seen this and fixed it? I just updated Fedora 19 and now terminal fonts are ghastly, ergggh, ugggly, awfulll, nothing like the clean crisp font when installed. For that matter Thunderbird fonts changed to uggerly at the same time, I have completely forgotten how to change terminal fonts. Still haven't found how to fix Thunderbird fonts either... Weird network problem

Hi, all. I've got several machines on a LAN behind a NAT with DHCP assigning always the same addresses from a dynamic IP. A couple of days ago the IP changed & since then, one of the machines running Fedora 17 always fails first time to connect to the network: launch Thunderbird, no start screen, first attempt to check mail, it tells me that there's no network connection, second attempt it connects. The scheduled DejaDup backup always fails with no network but will run manually no problem. Firefox can't find Google but the Nagios web interface is fine as is all the cli stuff (ping, ssh, etc). Most annoyingly, yum update goes through every mirror before partially downloading part of the updates & if the updates are large, it takes about three attempts to get them all installed. I'd like to clear this up naturally especially as in the next couple of weeks I'll be upgrading this box to Fedora 18 & the last thing I need is a dodgy network connection. All the machines below are on the same LAN & they all work fine after the IP address change, it's only the Fedora box that's causing problems. Any help appreciated. I'm stuck. When I right click on a date (not an event) in Lightning, many of the options are greyed out (and don't work). Exactly: New Event: Grey/inactive (NOT Normal), Double click works properly New Task: Grey/inactive (NOT Normal) Previous Week: Black/active Next Week: Black/active Cut: Grey/inactive (Normal) Copy: Grey/inactive (Normal) Paste: Grey/inactive, Even after copying an event (NOT normal) Copy appears to work properly; an event copied shows up in KDE's Klipper tool. I am running Fedora-19 with all updates installed using the KDE desktop on 8x6_64 hardware. In particular: KDE 4.11.1 thunderbird-17.0.9-1.fc19.x86_64 thunderbird-lightning-1.9.1-2.fc19.x86_64 Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas for a cure? Thanks - jon

HDA jack retasking

I have Intel HDA Audio on my motherboard (Asus P9X79 PRO). This chipset has the capability to retask jacks for another purpose, for example changing a line out jack to a headphone jack. Has anyone successfully retasked an audio jack (specifically, on my motherboard, the blue Line Out jack) to a headphone? I found a post on pulseaudio-discuss re. this hda-jack-retask program which seems to imply it can be done, but it didn't seem to work (I didn't try every available combination however): http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/pulseaudio-discuss/2011-December/0123… Regards, Raman

I have done hard disk installs using dvd.iso in the past several tilmes: f11,f12, f14, all using something llke title Install Fedora 14 hd0,0 sda1, repo=hd:/dev/sdb1:/root/df14iso root (hd0,0) #sda1 kernel /f14install/vmlinuz-install repo=hd:/dev/sdb1:/root/df14iso initrd /f14install/initrd.img-install I presume the above would still work for f19 with obvious changes using grub2. lately I have attempted using f19 netinst.iso., for which I found following advice menuentry 'Fedora 19 netinst' { linux /vmlinuz-install stage2=hd:/dev/sda9:root/Fedora-19-i386-netinst.iso initrd /initrd.img-install } Note "stage2=' not "repo=" Is "stage2=" intended only for netinst.iso, and "repo=" intended only for dvd,iso ? or, just when can I use "stage2=" just when can I use "repo=" ? I tried the above menuentry 'Fedora 19 netinst' with its "stage2=" and the installer came up but I couldn't manage the installer-- it seemed to insist on using all available space, and I could find no way to change that. and the install failed, with my usb external now forrmatted with 4 more large partitions. These I probably can remove with gparted........ If there is any general advice re using dvd.iso vs netinst.iso it would be greatly appreciated Jack

Blank Screen after login on Fedora 19

I have a laptop in a dock with an external monitor. In Fedora 18, I configured it use the external monitor as the primary display and to turn the laptop screen off. The machine in question has the following configuration: HP EliteBook 8560p Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz 8GB RAM ATI Radeon 6400M Docking Station with 1920x1080 monitor (connected via DVI) and wired network. Fedora 19 64-bit If I create a new user, I can log into the new user just fine. I see both monitors with the laptop screen being primary. If I change it so that the external monitor is primary and the laptop screen is off, I can reboot and login just fine. After I customize the desktop a bit, when I reboot and login, I get a blank screen with a mouse pointer, but it never goes any further. I've seen comments about changing the display manager to either kdm or lightdm, but neither of those helped. It still behaved the same. I even found a comment about logging in to a text system (no display manager) and using 'startx' to start the desktop. I tried that, but it still behaved the same. Is there some way I can regain control of the user? Is there a way I can reactivate the laptop screen without using the Display applet in the gnome-control-center? Craig
