System doesn't shut down properly under Fedora-18
by Jonathan Ryshpan
Recently installed F-18 system doesn't shut down properly. The symptoms
are:
* I click Shut Down, using KDE
* System appears to stop normally: fan stops, screen goes blank,
etc. EXCEPT that the light around the power switch doesn't go
completely dark; it continues to glow faintly blue. I don't
know what this means; no documentation.
* The system won't restart till it is reset. This can be done
either by pressing Reset on the computer or by powering the
system down and then powering it up.
* When the system is restarted, a message from systemd-fsck
appears to indicate that the disk drives were not closed
cleanly. /var/log/boot.log is attached.
Apart from this, the system runs fine.
Motherboard is ASUS M3A78-EM with a 4-core CPU.

F-18 display setting problem -
by Bob Goodwin
In a new Fedora-18/64 bit install in a new computer I am unable to set
the resolution above 1024x768 at 60HZ and would like to set it higher.
I found the following:.
[root@box10 ~]# ll /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
total 4
-rw-rw-r--. 1 root root 161 Feb 28 04:42 00-anaconda-keyboard.conf
To which I attempted to add configuration data for this ViewSonic
VX2035WM monitor, trying to increase the resolution to the
manufacturer's spec.
The following does not work. I got a black screen and had to bring up
another terminal and remove the file in order to reboot. The truth is I
don't really know what I'm doing, perhaps someone who understand this
can point out what needs to be done?
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor-conf
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "vesa" #Choose the driver used for
this monitor
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0" #Collapse Monitor and
Device section to Screen section
Device "Device0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16 #Choose the depth (16||24)
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1680x1050_60.00" #Choose the resolution
EndSubSection
EndSection
Any suggestion appreciated.

omp_get_thread_num
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
In Fedora 16, I used to use a call to the function:
omp_get_thread_num
which was probably provided by one on the openmotif package.
I cannot find such a library anywhere now.
On I wrong?
In fact this function is required by Minuit2
Thank for your help.

cups-1.5.4-18.fc17 & /etc/cups/cups-files.conf
by Gregory P. Ennis
Everyone,
The f17 update of cups to cups-1.5.4-18.fc17 on Feb 25th caused cups to
fail to start. This update had some security updates with a creation of
a new file /etc/cups/cups-files.conf that apparently can not be written
to by cupsd.
Log errors demonstrated that the lack ssl certificates on this unit
caused cupsd to fail. I commented the certificates out of
the /etc/cups-files.conf file, and got cups to start, but I still could
not get it to communicate with the cups print server on the network.
I finally gave up and added the line :
ServerName cupsserver.domain.com
to the /etc/cups/client.conf file and was able to get printer service to
this unit.
Has anyone else had this problem and found the solution other than the
use of the client.conf file.

preupgrade f16 to f17: can't find mainimage path in .treeinfo: /dev/root does not exist
by John Pilkington
Hi: This box is running f16. It has been upgraded in stages from f10.
Two disks, and when last tried could boot Win Vista, Vista recovery,
f12 and f16. It usually runs MythTV under f16, 24/7.
Preupgrade appeared to run ok, with the expectation of downloading the
installer on reboot, as previously. Curl reported error 404, with later
error messages as in the Subject.
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/...
I have saved a download of squashfs.img
Earlier this year dracut reported that ...lv_root contained a file
system with errors, inodes 'part of a corrupted orphan linked list', but
things still seemed to work. Eventually I ran fsck on ..lv_root.
Changes were made and the boot complaints stopped.
Last month, prompted by a post here that I can't now find, I ran fdisk
-l and saved the result. It sees /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, and one
partition on each is marked as bootable, but none of the lvm volumes
contains a valid partition table. I've looked for grub and grub2 files,
and although grub.conf has a recent date its contents are pre-f16.
I really don't want to wipe everything and start again. Help please.
TIA

sendmail & Verizon
by Kevin Cummings
Sorry, just re-subscripbed after a long absence. Not sure if my
original went through, so I'm resending. Sorry if it is a duplicate, I
wouldn't have seen any of the early responses....
Once upon a time, I was using a standard, out of the box, sendmail
configuration to send email directly from my computer to any other on
the internet. Nice.
Then, while RCN was my ISP, RCN decided that home users couldn't send
email (something about stopping SPAM) directly to the internat, and all
email had to be forwarded through RCN's email servers. Fine, I added:
> define(`SMART_HOST',`relay:[smtp.rcn.com]')dnl
to my sendmail.mc file.
Then, later, I switched to Verizon from RCN. I not only had to change
the SMART_HOST line to:
> define(`SMART_HOST',`relay:[outgoing.verizon.net]')dnl
> define(`RELAY_MAILER',`smtps')dnl
> define(`RELAY_MAILER_ARGS', `TCP $h 587')dnl
but I also had to set up /etc/mail/authinfo and add support for it to
sendmail.mc:
> FEATURE(`authinfo', `hash -o /etc/mail/authinfo.db')dnl
and my /etc/mail/authinfo file looks like:
> AuthInfo:outgoing.verizon.net "I:userId" "P:password" "M:PLAIN"
And everything works fine.
NOW: Verizon wants to:
1) change the outgoing server name to smtp.verizon.net
2) change the port from 587 (MSA) to 465 (SMTPS), and
3) require SSL for communication.
Sure, I can change my iPhone settings, and each Thunderbird instance in
the house (and it works), but I want to keep the home network using *my*
sendmail server for email, and have *IT* forward to Verizon. (Besides,
I have a few scripts that want to send a few housekeeping emails without
invoking Thunderbird.) I tried the obvious changes, but I think I'm
missing something:
> define(`SMART_HOST',`relay:[smtp.verizon.net]')dnl
> define(`RELAY_MAILER',`smtps')dnl
> define(`RELAY_MAILER_ARGS', `TCP $h 465')dnl
> AuthInfo:smtp.verizon.net "I:userId" "P:password" "M:PLAIN"
This configuration results in "Communication Timed Out with
smtp.verizon.net" or "read error from smtp.verizon.net", and mail justs
sits in my local mqueue waiting to be delivered.
Can some sendmail guru please point out what I've missed?
Please keep the "switch to another MTA" to yourself. I've been using
sendmail at home since 1996!
THANKS!
