installation issue 2
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I was thinking in making a bootable USB key for the installation.
I read: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_and_use_Live_USB
There is instruction about creating partitions and install the .iso on one
of them and make it bootable. The example is with a single partition:
su -c "livecd-iso-to-disk --reset-mbr
Fedora-17-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso /dev/sdX"
I am surprise taht we could not make the same on a specific partition by
making it bootable, like we do on a usual hardrive.
UNetbootin or liveusb-creator do not seem to have this option.
Am I wrong?
Thank.

compile error: #error "Only <glib.h> can be included directly."
by Ranjan Maitra
So, I have been trying to get sylfilter to compile and execute (since I
could not find a rpm in the fedora 18 repos).
The source code is available at:
http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/sylfilter/
Anyway, I configure in the following way:
./configure --with-libsylph=builtin --enable-sqlite=yes
Then I run:
make
I get:
......
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -I/usr/include/glib-2.0
-I/usr/lib64/glib-2.0/include -I.. -I/usr/local/include -DG_LOG_DOMAIN=

How do I get around this above error? I DuckDuckGo'ed for the above
error but did not find a satisfactory answer, expcept that I should
update the packages. But Fedora usually always have the most updated
packages.
Any suggestions on this?
Many thanks,
Ranjan

Multiboot question
by Christopher Meng
Hi all,
Recently I'm stucked with multiboot.
I have a disk with following partition:
sd1. 157GB NTFS of Win8
sd2. 55GB including:
sd5. 500M /boot
sd6. 4GB /swap
sd7. 50GB BTRFS Fedora 18
sd3. 55GB not parted
sd4. 32GB not parted
Now I want to install Fedora 17 on sd3 or sd4, but I don't know howto. From
Anaconda I failed evrrytime for not enough space or some other reasons.
So any hints availabe? I think two lvm is the way of installing dual
Fedora, isn't it?
Thanks everyone in advance!

rsyslogd and services in general
by Tod Thomas
Ok, old school here, Saturday morning hacking. What is the new method
for managing system services? Could someone point me to some good
documentation? The reason I ask is nothing is being written to
/var/log/messages and /etc/init.d/ doesn't seem to be a viable option
anymore. I tried:
/sbin/service rsyslog status
Redirecting to /bin/systemctl status rsyslog.service
rsyslog.service - System Logging Service
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/rsyslog.service; enabled)
Active: active (running) since Sat, 02 Mar 2013 09:50:50 -0500; 24min ago
Main PID: 2584 (rsyslogd)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/rsyslog.service
└ 2584 /sbin/rsyslogd -n -c 5
Looks good but logger "test";ls -lt /var/log/messages shows:
-rw-------. 1 root root 0 Feb 24 10:48 /var/log/messages
I must be missing something. TIA.

Preupgrade fc15->fc16
by Tod Thomas
I just completed upgrading a FC14 virtual machine running under virtual
box and it went pretty well. Now I am trying to do the same upgrade
only on a FC15 standalone machine to FC16. It looks like it can't find
any of the FC15 repos which is odd since FC14 went so well. Should I
expect this to work or is the FC15 release just too old? Why did the
FC14 upgrade go so well?
TIA - Tod

copy full system from old disk to a new one
by Martín Marqués
How can I pass my whole system from an old SATA disk (which is giving
me some trouble) to a new disk. I have 4 partitions, all of which I
have only passed /home using cp -.a
I'm a bit concerned about the root file system, how to change grub,
and if I'll have trouble with non-regular files from /var.
TIA!

restart install
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I checked twice the DVD, but the install fails during packages installion.
How can I restart it?
I guess that the list of packages which need to be installed are
stored somewhere and yum must be able to manage it!
Thank.

What does "mapping=identity" mean in /etc/exports?
by Greg Scott
Hello -
I'm migrating an old NFS server to newer hardware. /etc/exports in the old environment looks like this:
/shares/IMSHCS01 *(rw,insecure,sync,no_root_squash,all_squash,mapping=identity,anonuid=0,anongid=0
So the old system is exporting the directory, /shares/IMSHCS01 to anyone and everyone who wants to connect, with a bunch of switches essentially making it wide open.
Wonderful.
But on the new system, when I set up /etc/exports the same way, I get this error:
[root@nfs2013 etc]# exportfs -av
exportfs: /etc/exports:1: unknown keyword "mapping=identity"
[root@nfs2013 etc]#
Getting rid of "mapping=identity", my shared directory exports just fine.
I can find no mention of "mapping=identity" in any man pages, but several google references show this option in pasted-in copies of /etc/exports files. My hunch is, this is an obsolete option and no longer supported - but what did it do in case my new server needs to behave the same way the old server behaved?
Thanks
- Greg Scott

Re: F18 grub hang with blinking cursor after kernel update [SOLVED]
by Mike Zingale
Turns out that if you update the kernel with an external USB disk plugged
in, grub gets hosed. When I originally did the system yum update I had a
disk plugged in, that broke it the first time. I still had that external
disk plugged in for each attempt at rescue/grub2 reinstall. Finally it
dawned on me to try it without the external disk, and booting from the
install cd, rescue mode, and reinstalling grub fixed it all.
Weird bug.
