User lock really locks...
by fred roller
Hello all, I am new to the thread and have been away from the community
for a spell. I installed 18_64 on an Aspire7520 laptop and have enjoyed
getting back into Linux again. So you know I am comfortable in CLI and
fairly familiar with some of the inner workings and have been able to
troubleshoot most issues which have come up.
The issue I have is when I select "Lock" from the user options, upper
right hand the system locked the account. Nothing would cause a prompt
for password to get back into the account. Music was still playing from
when I left it, etc. everything seemed to work fine. I do know that
"esc" would give me the password prompt when the system locked from
settings in "System Setting --> Brightness & Lock" so the function seems
to work as advertised except when I choose Lock.
Will be surfing for answers, if anyone can get me pointed in the right
direction it would be appreciated. It's good to be back. :-)

F18 livecd can't play wma files, and no mplayer
by Fernando Cassia
I booted Fedora 18 off a LiveCD, and want to play back wma files.
So far, all my attempts have been unsuccesful. It's clear no wma
playback codecs are included with the files.
Plus, MPlayer, which usually plays back 'everything' is NOT included
in the official repos, and if I try to install mplayer from ATRPMS, it
gets a thousands (I'm exaggerating) dependencies and installation
aborts.
I tried looking around for a STATIC BUILD of mplayer, but that doesn't
seem to exist (someone used to compile mplayer statically, many many
years ago, but it seems there's no static builds of recent versions).
Please, let me know of ANY -preferably tiny and NOT dependencies
encumbered- player I can run on F18 from a LiveCD to play back wma
files....
TIA

NIC lockup in 3.8.8 (forcedeth)
by Sam Varshavchik
Is anyone running hardware with nforce gige NICs that use the forcedeth
kernel module.
Twice now, after updating to 3.8.8, after ~24 hours of runtime the server
drops off the network, with its port on the NIC flashing crazy. ifdown
works, ifup hangs forever.

fuse mount after boot
by Kevin Wilson
Hello,
I have fedora 18.
After boot, running mount | grep fuse
shows:
gvfsd-fuse on /run/user/0/gvfs type fuse.gvfsd-fuse
(rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0)
fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw,relatime)
do I need the second mount (fusectl mount ) ? How can I disable it in
boot in case it is not important ?
for what do I need the first (gvfsd-fuse) on /run/user/0/gvfs type
fuse.gvfsd-fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0) after
boot ?
How can I disable it in boot in case it is not important ?

Can't upgrade Fedora 17

I can't cleanly upgrade my Fedora installation (I use --skip-broken),
below is error reported by yum:

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
This is not rawhide or other testing env. It's frequently updated
"stable" F17 system.
I'd like to ask here if anybody had this problem, before I start
remove/re-install package by package orgy.

OT: "distro" goes mainstream :-)

Todays's New York Times crossword has "distro" as an answer. I don't
think I've ever seen it used in a mainstream publication.

Problems with nc command - F18
by Robert Moskowitz
Hello, I am trying to get Fedora-18-arm on my pogoplug, and having
problems so I as told to use netconsole to troubleshoot. I am
attempting to follow instructions from:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,14,14
I am up to starting nc in listen mode:
nc -l -u -p 6666
I have opened udp port 6666 on my notebooks firewall, but I get a usage
error, indicating the options are not valid.
So I read the manpage, and find out that our nc cannot have l and p
together. So I try out:
nc -u -p 6666
And I still get the warning. Can anyone point me to what the proper
Fedora options are for this?

firewalld files
by Robert Moskowitz
I have just built my first F18 box, and of course it is 'special'; it is
a Pogoplug running the armv5 distro. I have already had a couple issues
with this, and the fedora-arm list told me that these are general fedora
issues, so take it to the general fedora list. So to start:
What are the firewalld files? I have found one, so far, under
/etc/sysconfig. I need to figure out if one failure was I did something
wrong with the firewall-cmd line command.
thanks

F18 - no ifcfg-eth0
by Robert Moskowitz
Again this is the pogoplug armv5 install.
There is no /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 Only an ifcfg-l0
Yet the ethernet works, via dhcp. there is no hostname. No hostname
line in /etc/sysconfig/network and of course not in ifcfg-eth0. In
/etc/hosts, the system is labeled localhost.localdomain. A new one on
me is /etc/hostname that has one line saying localhost.localdomain. Of
course I want a specific fqdn for this system, so I need to change all
of this the right way.
Of course no GUI; this pogo only has 256Mb memory (not the 'bigger'
512Mb unit). Only ssh access; I don't have the serial port adapter. I
do have netconsole setup; but only if the pogo is at a particular IP
addr and to nc at a particular IP addr (set up in uboot).
Any insights are appreciated. Do I create an ifcfg-eth0 and how? Is
there a tool to properly setup hostname, or do I find all places where
it lives and fix it?
I only have a little time to work on this before I head off the first
half of next week to yet another meeting.
thanks

devede embedded subtitles
by Randolph Jones
can dvede make a video dvd using the srt file to embed subtitles?
I have tried several times; I get various errors/crashes.
the dvd does not play subtitles in dvd player
I can make a dvd that plays embedded subtitles in dvd player, but lots
of old movies on youtube have separate subtitle files, and
downloadhelper does not download the srt file with the movie, and the
downloaded movie does not have subtitles.
vlc can play the downloaded movie with the srt file to produce a
subtitled movie.
problem is how to make a dvd from this material that will play in a
player.
TIA
