ZDNet Recommends Linux
by Temlakos
Everyone:
This might seem a little beyond scope to most of you, but:
Windows XP is approaching its own EOL.
Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols released this article:
http://www.zdnet.com/five-operating-system-alternatives-to-windows-8-and-...
at ZDNet: Five OS alternatives to Windows 8 and Windows XP. And they
are, in his view:
5. Using AndroidOS or iOS in a tablet. (In his view: /not/ for the
"information producer." Looking things up is one thing. But creating the
things for others to look up is quite another.)
4. Mac
3. Linux
2. Google ChromeOS, which he describes as the Chrome browser running
on a bare-bones Linux desktop and accessing Google's SaaS offerings.
1. Windows 7. Interesting: he doesn't recommend going all the way to
Windows 8.
And at the bottom, he adds this:
(Quote)
You should keep in mind that in the long run, it appears Microsoft
really does want to switch you over to a Metro-style interface as part
of the "evolution" of Windows 8. If that idea gives you hives, then now
is the time to start looking for alternatives.

F18, selinux & sensors
by Cristian Sava
Hi all,
I want to monitor hardware temperatures using sensors.
sensors is working ok lunched in a terminal but i want to display the
output on the web.
So i have this simple php:
<?php
echo exec('/var/www/cgi-bin/my_sensors.sh');
?>
and my_sensors.sh in cgi-bin:
#!/usr/bin/bash
/usr/bin/sensors
exit
Why the problem showed in /var/log/messages (and blank web page)?
sensors is supposed to run ok, is it?
my_sensors lunch sensors = OK
sensors try i2c-adapter = deny
Do i miss something?
setroubleshoot: SELinux is preventing /usr/bin/sensors from read access
on the directory i2c-adapter. For complete SELinux messages. run sealert
-l 94ef69e6-5109-4c22-b464-ef220948dd6a
[root@s194 cgi-bin]# sealert -l 94ef69e6-5109-4c22-b464-ef220948dd6a
SELinux is preventing /usr/bin/sensors from read access on the directory
i2c-adapter.
***** Plugin catchall (100. confidence) suggests

If you believe that sensors should be allowed read access on the
i2c-adapter directory by default.
Then you should report this as a bug.
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.
Do
allow this access for now by executing:
# grep sensors /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol
# semodule -i mypol.pp

I would think it madness to use Fedora in a commercial activity, the upgrade cycle is to frequent and the risks of failure due to the "bleeding edge" to great. What advantage do you think Fedora would give you over whatever you currently use.
If you can't convince him to use RHEL/CentOS then I think it wrong to convince him Fedora would be better.
Obviously I have know knowledge of your actual business.

I wouldn't do it on moral grounds:
If you want to play/learn/experiment/contribute: use fedora by all means!
If you make a living from it / other people depend on it: use RHEL

Off Topic - Block iCloud -
by Bob Goodwin
Can anyone tell me how to block Apple iCloud in my router? I've tried
filtering icloud.com as mentioned in Google but it still downloads at
about 3GB per hour, a rate that would use up my month's allocation in
about 8 hours! There seems to be a dearth of information on Google on
the subject although it is a recognized problem.
Presently I am forced to block all the Apple devices on my LAN. I would
like to be more selective and allow them other functions, e-mail and
browsing, etc. They can use the 3g/4g system for their iCloud needs.
iCloud is really a very inefficient solution to a problem I didn't know
existed until my daughter subscribed and put a half dozen devices on it.
Any information or suggestions will be appreciated.

XDG_CONFIG_HOME
by Jonathan Ryshpan
Font control files and a bunch of other stuff for per-user configuration
is supposed to be stored relative to $XDG_CONFIG_HOME . I would assume
that this is be set by default by either a standard login script, or by
the window manager, which in my case is KDE. But it isn't. Is this a
problem? If it is a problem, how do I fix it?
Thanks - jon

Don't know what to tell you.
I have two F18 boxes that are both using the presto plugin for yum.

[OT] How to get all packages belonging to a group?
by Joachim Backes
Hi all,
is there a method to list all packages belonging to an installed group?
For example, "yum grouplist" lists LibreOffice as installed group, and I
want to know which rpm's are belonging to this group
(not by using "rpm -qa libreoffice*").
Kind regards
Joachim Backes

Yes, we do - during the *configuration* of moodle
either using the web route, which is broken in F18 :(
or running some php configuration scripts from the command line as the apache
user. This is the recommended way according to the official moodle docs.
BUT which scripts in which sequence? - that was my original question.

Try install presto yum plugin.

Summary : Presto plugin for yum
URL : http://www.lesbg.com/jdieter/presto/
License : GPLv2+
Description : Yum-presto is a plugin for yum that looks for deltarpms
rather than rpms
: whenever they are available. This has the potential of
saving a lot of
: bandwidth when downloading updates.
:
: A Deltarpm is the difference between two rpms. If you
already have foo-1.0
: installed and foo-1.1 is available, yum-presto will
download the deltarpm
: for foo-1.0 => 1.1 rather than the full foo-1.1 rpm, and
then build the full
: foo-1.1 package from your installed foo-1.0 and the
downloaded deltarpm.
