Uninstallation failure during update on F19
by Suvayu Ali
Hi,
While updating my system today, I came across this issue:
Running transaction
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.ARyh47: line 1: fg: no job control
error: %preun(nscd-2.17-13.fc19.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
Error in PREUN scriptlet in rpm package nscd-2.17-13.fc19.x86_64
Verifying : nscd-2.17-13.fc19.x86_64
Failed:
nscd.x86_64 0:2.17-13.fc19
Now I have two versions of nscd installed:
$ rpm -q nscd
nscd-2.17-13.fc19.x86_64
nscd-2.17-14.fc19.x86_64
How can I remedy this? Thanks for any help.
Cheers,

F19 not able to boot by UUID
by Mark Haney
Hi all, I've had this problem with Fedora since I got this netbook, and have been able to fix it until F19 came along. Here's my problem, for whatever reason the system can see the HDD and install just fine on my Gateway (Samsung) netbook but won't boot after install using the UUID. With F16 and 17 I could do this at the GRUB prompt to fix the boot issue:
set prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot
I FUBAR'd my system by upgrading from 17 to 18 using fedup. The upgrade boot option bombed and dropped into dracut. At the time, I didn't have a need to investigate and when F19 was released I had hoped the problem would be fixed and upgraded to it from the bastardized F17/18 system. Still no go.
So, I blew away that partition and installed F19 fresh. It still drops to dracut with the error 'UUID does not exist'. I rather expected to be able to use the commands above to fix that but obviously the boot process isn't the same now as I'm getting '/boot/grub/i386-pc/linux.mod not found' when I enter lines 3 and 4 above.
What can I do to fix this?

systemd service spawning packagekit daemon
by chandan
Hello all,
On Fedora 19, the packagekit daemon runs once in while in the background.
Can somebody please inform me about the systemd service that is responsible
for spawning the packagekit daemon?

How much ram does gnome-shell need?
by Sam Varshavchik
According to top:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
31671 mrsam 20 0 2485468 1.367g 30832 S 3.3 8.7 177:39.99 virt-manag+
1976 root 20 0 1127408 29764 13276 S 3.0 0.2 172:12.81 libvirtd
4342 mrsam 20 0 4731588 2.905g 39776 S 2.7 18.5 354:05.36 gnome-
shell
Does gnome-shell really need 3 gigabytes of RAM, to do WTF it does, and does
virt-manager really need 1.3 gigs?

Reinstall over LVM
by Roger
Is it possible to do a re installation of Fedora 19 where the file
system is LVM on a 2nd partition on my hard drive without losing files
in the /home directory structure?
There was a discussion about this some time ago but I didn't take much
notice then.
TIA

canon network scanner
by Hiisi
Hi there!
We have the following configuration in our lab: multifunctional
(printer+scanner) device canon mf4410 is connected to the usb port of a
router. Router is netgear WNR3500L and is configured to share this printer
to every computer in the lab. What steps should I take to make my fedora17
laptop to scan on this shared device? According to sane-project web-page
it's supported completely.
TIA

MATE desktop
by Howard Howell
My wife doesn't like the GNOME3 desktop. She did like GNOME2, so I have
found that MATE desktop is a fork of GNOME2. I have looked at the
software menu (on x86_64 F19) and see lots of stuff related to MATE.
What is the key to getting MATE installed and run on a user? Will the
GNOME3 version of Evolution, Firefox, etc all run?
If you have installed and used the MATE desktop, please give me your
opinion.

unprivileged users can update the system !
by jehan procaccia
I am using Fedora19 on hundred of stations for students, to my surprise
I noticed that anyone connected locally can update all packages of the
station !
the thing is that when the user connect to the station, there's a
notifcation that pops-up saying that there are updates available
accepting to proceed leeds to an update of all the station packages ;-(
apparently cliking on the notification start gpk-update-viewer (seen
that with ps auwx)
if the student tries to issue a yum update on the cli, then he is
refused "You need to be root to perform this command."
we need to maintain an homogenous state of update on all station, how
can I prevent users from update stations themself ?
Thanks.

F19: Wireless not working - dhclient not running?
by John Horne
Hello,
Updated from F17 to F19 with a fresh install, and have hit a few
problems. The main one is that my wireless interface does not come up
(it is an Atheros AR9170 device).
I configured it in F17 without NetworkManager by modifying
the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 (with NM_CONTROLLED=no)
and /etc/sysconfig/wpa_supplicant files. This worked fine, no problems
at all.
With F19, after making the same changes, the wlan0 interface appears but
is not assigned an IP address. It seems that wpa_supplicant works okay,
as does the general startup of the network (the loopback interface
appears okay), but running dhclient to get an IP address either does not
happen or fails. 'ps auxww' does not show dhclient as running. I can
find no errors in the log files.
If I run 'ifdown wlan0 && ifup wlan0' then the interface comes up with
an IP address (and this is recorded in the log file and ps shows
dhclient as now running).
Anyone any ideas why dhclient might not be running? I'll keep working on
this (obviously), but have already spent most of the day on it and got
nowhere.
Thanks,
John.
