problem: system freezes.

Good afternoon, This is Fedora-19 on a 64 bit quad-core i7; with an Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 660. I most recently updated Fedora last Wednesday, Sept. 04. At least once each day, the system just locks up with no advanced warning or symptoms. It just stops responding to the trackball and keystrokes. The display simply stops changing. The only things I can do is a hard reset or cut off the power. I am not aware of any pattern to what I'm doing when such a freeze-up happens. Once it happened after logging in and simply launching a terminal window; another time I was doing a "more" on a test file; another time I was reading e-mail through Firefox; another time I was listening to a CD; another time I was preparing to burn an audio CD. No error messages show up on the screen. This problem has been occurring for a few weeks now, and was occurring when I had Fedora-18 also. I just now think I have the time to try to handle it. (I'm guessing this will take some doing!) I'm just a home user. I have no sys. admin. training or experience. How do I diagnose and fix this? Thank-you in advance for your help. Bill.

Hi group, Since I've lost X and my screen - only being able to see it by plugging about external screen into it - I have a document that I saved as *odt; is it possible to change the encoding through a command since I can't call up open office in a text environment? Thanks, Richard

strange issue with notify-send

Hi, I have a strange issue with notify-send (using either window-manager: openbox or pekwm). So, what happens is that the pop-up (on the top right of the screen) appears to fall off the edge of the screen (on the right) with occasionally the rightmost part showing on the top left of the screen. As an example, consider the following: notify-send "Hello World! for he's a jolly good fellow who says hello world to all the world" the following is what happens on my 1920x1080 resolution laptop -- there is a popup and I see the following on the right side of my screen: I see upto "Hello World! for he's a jolly good fellow" (with only half the "w" displayed) and on the next line, I get "world to all the world". Clearly, the line goes beyond the workspace and eventually wraps around. On the other hand, I get notify-send "Hello" all right without any issues (because I guess the number of characters is too small to make a difference?). Anyone have any suggestions as to what is wrong? Or what I can look at to fix? I am using libnotify 0.7.5-5.fc19 on a completely up-to-date F19. fedora 17 yum update

I did a fresh install of fedora 17 a couple of months ago. I did yum update after the install. After almost two months, I don't have any new updates, which I find odd. I've done a yum clean all. package-cleanup --problems, orphans is all clean. How can I diagnose if the yum/rpm installation is okay? Printer slowed way down in fedora 19?

There is a networked Toshiba color printer at work I use maybe once every 6 months or so: Toshiba e-Studio 3530c Foomatic/pxlcolor (recommended) I just copied all the ppd files and wot-not every time I upgrade fedora, so I'm not sure how old the ppd I have is at the moment, but it has been working fine. On Fedora 20, however, while it still works, it now seems to be sending an infinite amount more data to the printer than it used to do. It would formerly print an 8.5x11 color drawing almost immediately (as long as the printer was warmed up :-), but now the network monitor goes to about 1 megabit transfer rate and stays there for a few minutes when I send a full page color image to the same printer. Anyone know what is going on here? Should I maybe just delete the printer and reinstall from scratch to see if an updated ppd would work better?

LAN driver problem

Dear List, first of all I wish to greet all members. My name is Giovanni and I'm a chemist in Naples, Italy. The problem I found is as follows: at work I use Fedora 10 and a few days ago I changed the motherboard because the old one is broken. With the new motherboard LAN connection to the network has stopped working. The new motherboard is as follows: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3505 # sp and as a controller LAN has, as you can see, the Atheros AR8151 chip (10/100/1000 Mbit). I saw on the net that there were many problems with this AR8151 chip. I also tried to download the latest drivers and install them, but nothing to do. I only found drivers for Atheros different versions of the chip, but not for AR8151 Unfortunately I am forced to not being able to upgrade the operating system to the new Fedora 19. I also tried to live to start both Fedora 19 and Ubuntu 13.04 and the LAN is working properly. So I think it is intended solely as a driver problem. Hi The following message (its one line) is swamping /var/log/messages, occurring many times per second. Does anyone know what it means, and especially how to fix it, or at least turn it off. f19-64: gnome3: screen is blocked when resume after suspend

Many time, when I resume my notebook after suspend, the screen show last image of last desktop used (not blank screen or unlock screen!) and I do not get control via mouse or keyboard of my application: gnome 3 is freeze or timeout to some network call or other kind of block . To get control of my notebook I must go to CTR+ALT+F2, login with my user and "pkill -9 gnome-shell", then go to CTRL+ALT+F1. Now all work fine, and I get control to my application open. ssh tunneling

Hi. Not sure if this is the right list, but I'm trying to figure out how to allow an app running on an external machine to be setup to access a "port"/app running on another machine through a ssh tunnel... machine A is the machine running an app located on port 4725 machine A is running sshd, and I can ssh into it machine B is the client machine, running a test app that wants to connect to port 4725 via the foo app. machine b can ssh into machine A by doing ssh fuser(a)1.2.3.4 and giving the password when foo runs on machine B, it's looking to connect to port 4725, so I'm trying to figure out how to allow port 4725 from machine A to be forwarded through to port 4725 in machine B... any pointers would be useful thanks
