mount shows mounted partition as /dev/mapper/HGST_HTS721010A9E630_JR10006P0BSEEF3

/dev/mapper/HGST_HTS721010A9E630_JR10006P0BSEEF3 on /sdc3 type ext4

So, how come I do not see it listed as I see /dev/sda3. To wit:
# mount | grep sda3
/dev/sda3 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)
If I unmount /dev/mapper/HGST_HTS721010A9E630_JR10006P0BSEEF3
# umount /dev/mapper/HGST_HTS721010A9E630_JR10006P0BSEEF3
and I try
# mount /dev/sdc3 /sdc3
mount: special device /dev/sdc3 does not exist

Can't re-create initrd
by CLOSE Dave
I'm working on a local change to the initrd used by PXE for Fedora 20.
The standard version works great for me. As an experiment, I ran these
commands.
# ls -l initrd.img
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 34631660 Dec 12 2013 initrd.img
# mkdir newrd; cd newrd
# unxz <../initrd.img | cpio -i
# find . | cpio -o -c | xz >../initrd2.img
The resulting initrd2.img has exactly the same size as the original file
but the contents are not in the same sequence. That is, "cpio -t" on the
two files shows the same number of files but not in the same order. I've
also tried creating the new file with this command.
# unxz <../initrd.img | cpio -it | cpio -o -c | xz >../initrd2.img
This results in a new file with the contents in the same order as the
original.
But when I put initrd2.img in place of initrd.img and try to PXE boot,
the boot fails with the message, "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS:
Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(2,0)". There may be more
details before that message but they roll off my screen too quickly.
What am I doing wrong?

sony-ericsson p910i
by Walter Cazzola
Dear Experts,
since I'm moving to a new phone my old sony-ericsson p910i is going to
retire but before that I'd like to get all the SMS, phots and phone
numbers I've stored on it and that I can't move to the SIM (too small).
It connects to my laptop through a craddle and a usb cable and lsusb
gives the following:

But the KDE "device notifiers" (I don't know the application name) don't
recognize its presence not mount it automatically.
Googling around seems that the tool to connect to a smartphone (also old
generation as mine) is gnokii but seems that it needs to be configured
before detecting the phone and I'm not able to do that. Google doesn't
help either: I didn't find any configuration for gnokii supporting my
phone.
So, some of you can help me?
Best

outrageously newbie question about playing with GPS on fedora
by Robert P. J. Day
(note: even though i'm running rawhide, this issue has nothing to do
with rawhide itself, so i'm using the regular list.)
having never messed with GPS software running on linux, one or two
truly beginner-level questions. if i want to simply buy a GPS receiver
and set up my fedora laptop to start receiving raw NMEA data, once i
purchase the receiver and install something like gpsd, is there any
additional expense in terms of a monthly service subscription or
anything like that? (i warned you this would be a dumb question.)
i'm interested primarily in experimenting with receiving/parsing
NMEA data, the kernel modules involved, etc., so i don't need
spectacular performance or precision. i'm in california next week so i
figured i'd check out these two USB GPS receivers:
http://www.embeddedworks.net/satl114.html
http://www.embeddedworks.net/satl116.html
then i'd install gpsd (or equivalent if one exists), fire up a client
and start reading data. is there any more to it than that? also open
to recommendations for other GPS receivers if anyone has good
experiences.

Creating a static ethernet connection, once again
by Geoffrey Leach
Sorry to be a bother, but ...
To recap. I have an ethernet port that's wired to a HDTV tuner that converts OTA HDTV to ma4 and streams it down the cable to a program that collects and stores it. All of this is known to work under Fedora 17. No so under Fedora 19. FirewallD is stopped.
The ethernet port has a ifcfg script with
HWADDR="E8:40:F2:05:DE:1C"
BOOTPROTO=none
IPADDR="198.168.20.5"
but is otherwise as created by Anaconda.
To test the interface, one asks the tuner to say what connections it has, hdhomerun_config discover. This is the basic interface. Tracking this with Wireshark, I see:
Frame 1: 62 bytes on wire (496 bits), 62 bytes captured (496 bits) on interface 0
Ethernet II, Src: Pegatron_05:de:1c (e8:40:f2:05:de:1c), Dst: Broadcast (ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff)
Internet Protocol Version 4, Src: 198.168.20.5 (198.168.20.5), Dst: 198.168.20.255 (198.168.20.255)

Flags: 0x02 (Don't Fragment)
Fragment offset: 0
Time to live: 64

I interpret this as saying that I sent 20 bytes of data via the UDP protocol from 198.168.20.5 to anybody on the 198.168.20 subnet. As I received no response, presumably that's not what I wanted to do.
Is this significant? I can ping 198.168.20.5 successfully, but Wireshark does not see any packets.
Thanks.

Question about Thunderbird
by JD
Running current TB thunderbird-31.1.1-1.fc20.x86_64
Received a message from a vendor I deal with, via paypal.
The message content was alright as I expected it to be.
However, TB displayed the From field as some other name,
other than <vendor's name> via paypal
which is usually how invoices come to me from paypal.
Except in this message (first time I see this), the from field
is from another entity.
I examined the full headers and I did not see the entity that
TB claims the message was from.
Does anyone have an idea how this can occur?

usb/wifi -
by bruce
hey...
i'm testing on a couple of fed/centos boxes, using cheap ralkink 5370
chipset usb/wifi adapters
i'm getting the following msgs in the /var/log/messages which
indicates that i've got a major wifi issue!!
i'm looking for input/thoughts on trying to debug this to see how to
correct my data issues!
basically:
-how to see/determine exactly how much throughput (download) i'm getting
-what can be done to "throttle" if this is needed..
the boxes are on a "shared" wifi router, could this be causing an
issue with other boxes attached to the router as well??
thanks

A login annoyance
by JD
My login shell is /bin/ksh.
My ~/.profile makes no calls to /etc/profile, directly or indirectly
that I can see.
Yet every time I login (console or gnome-terminal (which is set to run
as a login shell)), I get this annoyance:
/etc/profile[68]: .: line 921: warning: line 932: `&>file' is
nonstandard -- interpreted as `>file 2>&1' for profile input only
/etc/profile[68]: .[1716]: local: not found [No such file or directory]
/etc/profile[68]: .[1690]: local: not found [No such file or directory]
/etc/profile[68]: .[1691]: local: not found [No such file or directory]
/etc/profile[68]: .[1692]: local: not found [No such file or directory]
My .profile file sets a lot of env variables for things that I use,
and this was not an annoyance until fc20.
Guess I have to constantly remind myself: It's all beta stuff :)
