Xfce lock screen really not blanking screen
by Robert Moskowitz
On a Lenovo x120e.
It makes the screen blank, but does not turn off the video so there is
this black light on the screen. My Gnome system (same model, different
unit) really turns off the video for blanking the screen.
I should also say that the Xfce system is running F21 final RC1.
So am I missing an Xfce screen option, as I am new to Xfce? Or is
something not right either in Lenovo support or in F21?

Somewhat OT, encryption question
by William Oliver
I was thinking about the infamous "code purple error" for HP computers, where Windows is keyed to the hardware of the machine. If you swap out a hard drive or change a card, it won't boot. Apparently, there is a "tattoo" of various hardware identifiers in static memory somewhere and the OS matches a code put in during installation with that number.
For the HP issue, the fix is easy -- you just delete the command to check during boot up. But, I was thinking about this as an encryption option -- where one could encrypt files in a way that automatically incorporates hardware information with the passphrase. That way, if someone were to intercept a file and knew your passphrase, they would still not be able to decrypt the file unless they did it on one specific machine.
Is there anything like that for fedora? It would probably be pretty easy to hack the gpg source code to add a few lines to append system information to the passphrase, but if there's something already around, I'd like to play with it...

monitor arrangement
by SternData
I just plugged in a 2nd monitor and it's working very nicely. I have it
set so monitor #1 (primary) is on the right and monitor #2 (secondary)
is on the left. I set this from ALL SETTINGS -> DISPLAYS.
On reboot, the system comes up with #1 on the left and #2 on the right,
not physically, but virtually. I have to move the mouse to the right on
the primary monitor to get it on the secondary monitor to the left.
How can I force the settings to be saved across sessions and boots?

Wine + Safari 5.1.7 + Adobe Flash Player
by JD
Hi all,
I repeatedly installed Adobe flash player within wine
so that Safari can play flash vids (under Wine).
But Safari keeps popping a message in the video window
to install the missing plugin.
Any info on how to make it work?

process tbl
by bruce
Hey..
A test app does a fork, creates children processes.
Is there a way to view the procTBL "ps" to be able to see that a
process is a "child" process?
I know you can see when a child has stopped, but the parent is still
running.. but is there a way to see if there are "running" children,
some attribute that denotes i'm a child?
Or, is there some attribute that denotes the process has running children?

Guest OS on VBox and key bindings
by JD
Is there a way to alter key bindings so that key sequences
like Ctl+Alt+Fn (n=1....9) can be intercepted by GUEST and
be able to see a GUEST virtual tty?
Thanx.

grub : how to edit grub config by command / script ?
by santosh
I am using CentOS 6 and grub 0.97
1. Launched a Virtual Machine (VM) with CentOS 6. (This step is done.)
2. After the VM comes up, copy latest kernel and initrd from remote
server to /boot
through a script present at /etc/init.d/ (This step is done)
3. How to edit grub config file either by command or by script (but
not manually), to update
the new kernel and initrd so that next time it boots up with the
new kernel ?
Thanks

Audio level doesn't stay set.

Fedora 20 x86_64, gnome shell
I'm recording off my line input and it's coming in a bit hot so I'm using
the gnome-shell control to drop it from 100% to "unamplified". It stays as
long as the program runs but as soon as I close it (or when I reload the
program, haven't checked) it resets to 100%.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Richard

enscript duplex option works on F17 but not F20 or F21
by Robert Moskowitz
These are the only versions of Fedora I have handy...
I use enscript to print IETF docs off in 2up/duplex:
enscript -2r --margins=:::45 -DDuplex:true -P HP8600
draft-moskowitz-sse-00.txt
Worked fine last fall, then stopped working when I installed F20; I
don't recall what I was running prior, I think F19. What stopped was
the Duplex feature. I put up with this for the past year, no 2-sided
printing. So I tried it on the F21 beta today, and still no duplex.
Then I remembered I have an Asus EE 4g Surf with F17 on it. I set up
the printer and this version DOES do duplex.
So some point, I think with F20 something changed, perhaps in hplip such
that the Duplex option is no longer working.
Any ideas on how to figure this out? Printing IETF docs nicely is not
so easy. They are exactly formated to page size, and you can't pay
around with that so easily. It took me a bit to figure out the margins
to get it to fit.
Oh, Libre office, Firefox, and Thunderbird all do duplex printing just
fine to the HP8600. There is a nice dialog to select 2-sided printing.
