fedup - luks encrypted system
by Robin Laing
Hello,
In the past, using fedup was a disaster due to encrypted systems.
Is this working in F21?
Don't use LVM's and partitions are encrypted using LUKS. This includes
/tmp swap. /boot isn't encrypted.
Have had issues installing in the past with encrypted partitions.
Seen many bug reports about fedup and encrypted partitions.
Will be going from F19 and F20 to F21.

Successful install of F1-Xfce on my Lenovo x120e
by Robert Moskowitz
I don't do fedups; I somehow start fresh each time. This time I have
another unit to install to.
So it went smoothly. Remember, you use the server netinst for
workstations. Just select which workstation you want from the software
list. Kind of like what we always had with server in selecting which
type of server. They just added workstation as another set of options.
Have a good weekend all.

how to store hidden WIfi passwords/VPN passwords without gnome-keyring
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I only use gnome-keyring to store my hidden wifi passwords and vpn passwords (one each in number). How do I do this without gnome-keyring? I looked around and (as usual) Arch has some documentation but the fields mentioned there are not there in the fedora configuration files.
Btw, I use the SLiM login manager and there is a /etc/pam.d/slim but I am not sure how to eliminate gnome-keyring in favor of this to store my passwords, etc.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Start here: http://www.linuxatemyram.com/
It's _probably_ Linux working as designed.
And you say you have 8gb of RAM, so using half of it for your running
programs gives you a lot of breathing room. What is the problem you're
looking to fix?
If you want to investigate further, you might want to look at the
ps_mem command (sudo dnf install ps_mem; sudo ps_mem). That will give
you a better idea of where the memory is going (outside of kernel
usage).

Latest systemd news
by Sam Varshavchik
Making the rounds of various technical mailing lists yesterday, with a
subject that's typically a variation of "Just for yucks, and giggles" is a
link to a commit to systemd's git, adding DNS caching to systemd; in one,
huge 857 line glop. Here's its entire commit message: "resolved: add DNS
cache".
And, it's beauty to read. Made me teary-eyed to know that systemd will cache
my DNS queries. Not sure why systemd, all of a sudden, needs to make DNS
queries. But if it does, it's going to cache them now! Such a sight to
behold makes my heart skip a beat: now, not just bind, or pretty much every
DNS server that automatically caches DNS for you – but so will systemd!
But, seriously folks, systemd's DNS caching achieves absolutely 100%
nothing. Really. Surprised? Well, you'll be shocked to know that the DNS
server that systemd queries for that DNS RR, such as the stock "bind",
already automatically caches all recursive DNS replies!! systemd's own
caching produces absolutely zero useful results. On the oft chance that it
sends a query for a non-cached RR, the local DNS server will cache the
response, before returning it to systemd, and then use the cached response
for all future queries. That's what DNS servers do: provide caching for
local clients. It's inherent in DNS's design: DNS was explicitly designed to
use aggressive caching, it's an internet-wide, distributed, locally cached
database.
Isn't modern technology amazing?
I'm willing to consider the possibility that I missed something obvious,
some obvious value-added result from caching DNS RRs directly by systemd,
and I'll stick around for someone to enlighten me; or if Occam's razor
applies, and the author of that commit had no idea that bind already
automatically caches DNS responses, and, more importantly, that its caching
algorithms are a result of painful lessons learned from various DNS cache
poisoning attacks, that have circulated around the intertubes, for the last
couple of years.
The only possible use case for this kind of caching approach would be if:
A) You do not have a local DNS server nearby; and you have non-negligible
latencies to whatever DNS server you use.
B) Your queries tend to be for domains that your DNS servers are not
authoritative for, so they'll benefit from local caching.
So, can someone explain to me how likely this is going to be the case in a
typical deployment scenario that systemd is targeted for; in an average
corporate environment where systemd's alleged benefits will supposedly shine?
I would guess that a typical systemd deployment, in a corporate/business
environment, will certainly have multiple, low-latency DNS servers nearby,
won't that be the case? And, if so, then this is just another potentially
exploitable security hole in systemd, nothing more.
P.S. After I wrote the above, poking around, Google dumped this onto my
screen:
http://seclists.org/oss-sec/2014/q4/592
Mental note to myself: go back and check the timestamp of the systemd git
commit – before, or after, this was disclosed…

Bassically this suggest avoid collisions with nouveau. However, even

hangs when starting gdm

fedora 21 and xen
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
2 part question.
Just installed f21. I like the way the distro has a common base and
"flavors" that build on that. Nice approach. yum also seems to be
*much* faster.
1) Does anybody know where the standalone xen packages are?
2) Is there a virtualization group or is that what the "cloud" flavor is?
Thanks,
Mike Wright

F21 rpc-gssd and systemd
by Ian Chapman
Hi,
I use NFS4 with Kerberos. How do you enable the rpc-gssd service so that
it starts on boot? If I manually start the service after boot,
everything works as expected, but I'm suspecting a bug in the nfs-utils
systemd service files. Thanks.

Backup solution
by Ali AlipourR
Hi
I'm new to Linux and unix-like systems, I need some advice on backup
solution for file level and block level backups
for file-level backups I found fsarchiver, dar, tar and for
file-system-level fsarchiver, clonezilla/partclone and dd appropriate
based on my requirements
(data integrity and confidentiality, mount and single-file-restoration
capabilities, btrfs and GPT support, ACL/Selinux preservation, xz
compression)
Advantage of tar and dd is that they are available every where but I'm
mostly concerned about file integrity with tar
and dd copies all unused blocks of file system too (fsarchiver or
clonezilla/partclone will only copy file-system + MBR)
I need some advice on Backup solutions, what is your personal methods
and solutions?
Any advice would be most welcome
Thanks
