Cannot control Screen Brightness - Fedora 20
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I have Fedora 20 installed on a Lenovo W540. I cannot control the
screen brightness via the Function F5/F6 keys, nor can I control it via
the system settings (KDE) --> Power Management settings...
Can anyone help me debug this?
Thanks in advance...

Help debugging / correcting wireless speed issue
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I'm switching from Mac back to Fedora, my new Fedora laptop is a Lenovo
W540 with this card:
Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260AC
I posted about issues earlier, which I've been able to resolve via a
clean install. The wireless and wired connections connect immediately
and behave as they should.
However, the Fedora laptop connected to my local access point shows a
download speed of 1.63Mbps, while the mac, running the same test from
the same site (http://speedtest.comcast.net) shows a download speed of
26.89Mbps
Both laptops are sitting on the same desk, same distance from the access
point
I don't expect exact matching speeds but this is a dramatic
difference... can anyone help me debug / correct this?
Thanks in advance

poor font rendering in ffox on f18
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
Running firefox v26.0 on f18 with xfce and trying to enjoy the new Ted
Talks, e.g.:
http://www.ted.com/talks/juan_enriquez_wants_to_grow_energy.
Their new site pulls in its own fonts: helvetica-neue.
On Chrome it displays perfectly (or falls back to sans-serif???) but on
firefox it is extremely difficult to read. Using firebug I can force it
to use sans-serif, which does display nicely.
Here's the link to a screen capture:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19486401/neue.png
that shows the leading vertical edges of n,u,h,p don't display; x is
also broken.
Any idea where this bug lies? ff, f18? and how to force "sans-serif"
without doing it manually for each ted talk. Maybe a ted talk on how to
fix their choice of font ;D
Thanks for any suggestions,
Mike Wright

I want to install the VLC Media Player on my F20. The VLC website is very

Any advice? Thanks!

Can I scale ONLY my primary monitor?
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I have a shiny new 1920x1080 screen on a laptop running Fedora 20.
I've gone into system settings (KDE) "system settings --> application
appearance --> Fonts" and set the "Force fonts DPI to 115 which I sortof
like on my laptop display but not so thrilled with it on the external
display(s) I use
Is there a way to scale ONLY the laptop / primary display?
Thanks in advance

F20 KDE Synaptics tapping not working
by Mark Haney
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I just rebuilt my Samsung netbook with upped RAM and a new HDD.
Finally restored Win7 on it and did a clean install of F20. For some
reason now, my Synaptics touchpad doesn't let me tap to select items.
It's enabled in the settings, it just doesn't seem to want to work.
This is a KDE install of F20. I don't recall having any issues with
the touchpad before I did the clean install, but I rarely if ever use
the touchpad since I have a wireless USB mouse.
Any ideas on where to start with this?

can't boot F19 system
by Paolo Galtieri
Today I needed to power off one of my F19 systems. So I logged out and
selected shutdown from the top right button. Instead of powering off as I
expected, and was told it was going to do from the message that appeared on
the screen, much to my amazement it didn't. Instead it restarted and went
back to the login screen. This happened again when I tried it. So in
desperation I hit the power switch. Well now the system wont boot.
Instead it always goes to emergency mode.
I booted off a F19 DVD, went into troubleshooting and ran fsck on all the
file systems. They all came back clean - no errors, and yet I can't get it
to boot. I have hit the power switch to power off a system in the past
because it was so hung up I couldn't do anything else. Every time the
system has recovered, but not this time.
Anybody know what I need to do to get back to a working system?
This particular system is a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop.
Any assistance is appreciated.

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! after recent update of Fedora 20
by The Walters
After a recent update started seeing messages like what is listed below
and now complete lock up. Tried going back 1 or 2 kernels but same
issue. Wondering if this is a hardware problem? The system is a Dell
poweredge SC420 with an Intel P4 2.8 GHz processor. No special additions
to it.
