Posting issues?

I cannot get posts to go through my domain email account. I am testing to see if this gmail account will accept posts. I posted a question but never got a acknowledgement email. It was working, then it just stopped... And nothing is going to the spam folder neither. this is odd. Thanks ~ CHRISTOPHER~ chris(a)marlows.org

I am using fedora or rather redhat based distribution since there was Redhat 5 ( probably in middle ninteies or something ) As far as I can tell the disk partitioning scheme under F1/20 definetly needs some kind of rework to make it unambigious to users. The developers must understand one thing from user's perspective that: 1} The systems being installed are mostly dual boot having other OSes &/Or partitions, already having precious data in them. 2} The users are always jittery if they do not fully understand where the whole thing is leading to, especially in regard to partioning. So a bit of more verbosity & transparency of what exactly the installer is doing will go a long way in mitigating the user's complaints. 3} Developers have built the UI & know its INs & OUTs. If they try to use the UI 'as a user', it will always lead to false analysis because their knowledge will always warp the UI experience & they will always make the right decisions even if those decisions are the most difficult. So in order to understand the UI from a User's Perspective they should always listen to users & give weightage to their complaints because that is exactly what the UI is delivering & not what the developers are thinking. But then point 3 goes for all the UI in place be it installer or full fledged Desktop GUI. In case of installer, it just becomes a very dicey from the user's point of view with so much at stake & so little information. Developers must understand that even if what appears to be a very dumb question/complaint, it actually is not dumb but just plain ambigiousness in UI. Confusion mostly arises from inadequate info where decision making is required, which is amply available with the developers but to the users, due to bad UI. --

NAS not detected

Hi, i have a NAS at home and my laptop does not find it when i open : Browse Network laptop (running F20) and NAS (running Ubuntu 10 server) are both in the same network. weird xzcat behaviour

I chose Fedora's ARM image since I'm more comfortable with using Fedora. In the process of trying to using xzcat to dump the image to the microSD card I noticed something strange. When I tried: sudo xzcat Fedora-Minimal-armhfp-20-1-sda.raw.xz > /dev/sdb I would get a 'Permission denied' error. But when I ran the same command as root directly, it worked just fine. I'm not sure I've ever encountered a situation where sudo wouldn't work like this before. Is there a particular reason for this? Or is this a bug? KDE desktop icons disappear regularly

Every second time I run KDE, the icons on the desktop are not there and the desktop is empty. Why? I am speaking of icons that are shortcuts to launch applications. KDE graphical component are still there. Frédéric

F20: fail to suspend with ext monitor, and backlight off

I've a laptop that was fine under F18, but since upgrading to F20 over the weekend, now has difficulties with suspending, and with turning the laptop's backlight on again. The symptoms are: On a freshly booted system, login, and where I *haven't* yet connected my external monitor, closing and opening the laptop lid suspends and resumes fine. If I plug in the external monitor, wait a bit, unplug the external monitor and wait a bit more, then from then onwards, closing the lid causes a suspend followed immediately by a resume (i.e. with the lid still closed). The second issue is that once suspend is broken, if I halt the machine, power off (and even remove the laptop battery), then when I reboot, at a late point in the boot process (where the Fedora teardrop/speech-bubble is nearly full), the laptop's backlight turns off. At this point the laptop becomes useless. Almost nothing I try will cause the backlight to come back on; not mouse or keyboard activity, or Alt_Ctl-F<n>, nor suspending, rebooting etc. (Well, rebooting gets the backlight on again during the early part of the reboot, then it turns off again as before.) The only way I managed to get it back on again was ssh-ing in from another host and messing about with xrandr and xbacklight. power options on laptop

Hi, i installed on my laptop Asus G73SW Fedora 20 and i would like to know if it exists in linux, some tools to setup different power options like "silent office mode", "full performance", "games"... so CPU fan speed can be tuned (so reducing noise), GPU fan also, etc... thx. A.

My tax software has endless lists of financial institutions it can import data from, and none of them are ever any of my financial institutions :-). So over the years, I've developed the habit of downloading the PDF tax forms so I can at least cut & paste the correct numbers with no transcription errors. Lo and Behold, this year everyone seems to have discovered the wonders of protected PDF files locked against cut & paste. Sigh... :-(. Enter the pdf2ps and ps2pdf tools on fedora! Convert the stoopid protected pdf to postscript then the postscript back to pdf and the furshlugginer protected flags are gone! Now I can cut & paste again...

Steam on Fedora

I'm not a gamer but I thought I'd check out the Steam engine on F20. This is on the RPMfusion nonfree repo and installed with no problems. However when running it I get a popup error saying: OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems. For more information visit https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9938-EYZB-7457. A glance at the above URL reveals that the problem is probably due to Steam being a 32-bit binary and I only have 64-bit libraries. I'm using a GT630 video card with the NVidia proprietary driver (also from RPMfusion). Is this solvable without jumping through many hoops? poc
