[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? ATA2:00: link is slow to respond....

Hi, my computer boot only in emergency mode ... Looking the journalctl (command journalctl -xb), I found (in thejournalctl ) these lines in red color : ATA2:00: link is slow to respond.... (and after..) ATA200: SRST failed (erro 16) That seem indicate that it is a problem to access the HDs.. I found a possible solution to the problem in this post: http://codeverge.com/opensuse.org.help.install/-solved-ata1-srst-failed-err… There is wrote that :...the problem can depend by the physic set up of the HD (as "master", "slave", "single drive", ...): this set up can be done by changing the position of a jumper on the HD... I know that, in the past time, the HDs had to be set physically in this way.., but recently I never heart anymore that the modern HD need this operation.. So actually I don't care anymore of the configuration of the HDs (my HD is Toshiba 1 TB that I bought few mounts ago). I would like to have a confirmation that what I read in the post is only an obsolete information and, in any case, I would like to know also what I can do to go around in my problem.. >From the command line: ls /dev/sd* I get: give me this input : /dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda5 /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2 Thank you regards Angelo

nc missing option -z

Hi, I used to use netcat to check if a particular host is up or if I have internet connection before I run a few scripts. I would use the -z option in particular. But now I see that has been removed: $ nc -z imap.gmail.com 993 && sync-my-email.sh ncat: invalid option -- 'z' Here is the excerpt from the old manual page: -z Specifies that nc should just scan for listening daemons, without sending any data to them. It is an error to use this option in conjunction with the -l option. Any ideas what happened to it? What can I use as replacement? Thanks for any ideas. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. F21: Thunderbird insists on calling Fedora list messages junk!

Good afternoon, Most messages received from this fedora list are labelled junk by Thunderbird. This is even though I whitelisted "From" = "users-request(a)lists.fedoraproject.org". Actually, I have this problem both in my Fedora-21 and my windows-7 systems. Any ideas? Surely messages from this list are not junk! thanks, Bill.

how to set 24-hour clock (military time) on Fedora 20 in KDE?

Sending a desktop to a big screen

Hi there, imagine a medium sized office room, where four engineers hack away (all of them currently have Fedora 22 workstations, to stay on topic.) On that room there's a fifth PC, hooked to a big TV on the wall (also running F22) that has Firefox running full screen with some visualization of sorts (dashboard thingy). Those five computers are all on the company wired network... nothing you haven't seen a thousand times before. Now, Sally, one of the engineers wants to share her desktop with the others and uses application XYZ to project/cast/extend/send it to the big TV (via its PC, of course). All of them discuss whatever was on her mind, and five minutes later, she closes application XYZ and the office goes back as it was before. Fred wants to do the same, and he does. Actually all of them can. They asked me what is XYZ. I was thinking on a member of the VNC family, but what they want to do is the reverse of what one normally do with VNC. To make things more... interesting? XYZ must never go out of the corporate LAN and if it were Open Source, the better. Any ideas on XYZ? Best regards, Amit. PS. Erm... one last thing. dnf update vs Software Udpates

This is weird. Software Updates on the Control Panel says that there are 39 updates available But when I run dnf update it says "Nothing to do". What gives? /boot and encrypted partitions?

I was luck enough to be bitten by this issue ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1212907 ) when attempting to do a clean install of F22. I copied all of my data off and then tried manually setting things up as separate partitions (instead of in an LVM) but it kept telling me that /boot couldn't be on a LUKS partition. The config I had was /home was encrypted and / was encrypted but then the biosboot partition was not encrypted, and all 3 were standard partitions. Is this something that's just not supported? Or was I doing something wrong? Thanks, Dave

UEFI system: reboot does not work but shutdown -r now does

Hi, On a new UEFI-boot desktop running Fedora 22, the command (on a terminal prompt) "reboot" does not actually bring up the system. Actually, it is not clear that the system even goes down. What happens is that the monitor light goes off but the desktop light stays on -- and nothing happens. I don't even see the Fedora f/infinity bubble. However, running "shutdown -r now" brings the Fedora f/infinity bubble, the lights switch and the system boots again. What is the issue here? Any suggestions? I have never had this happen previously, but then this my first try at a UEFI system. Is it possible to disable "reboot" -- i am concerned about "reboot"ing remotely by habit and accident and the system not coming up until being powered on. I considered renaming the file /usr/sbin/reboot to something else, but then an update to systemd would likely break my "fix". Hello, In fedora 22, where can I say to start the first graphics screen (login) to load the right keyboard? It is set properly in Setting > Region & Language > Input Screen Every time that I logout out, it return to the wrong keyboard. Is it something to set in grub? In Fedora 20, this was OK. Ubuntu and Mint work in this mode well, until recently I want to give Fedora a chance, but it failed with IO Errors like this, when I did sudo yum install something (or dnf install something), this is always reproducible kernel panic whenever I run it on laptop physical hardware, or in kvm, with the current Fedora 22 Workstation image, I tested a few other spins as well, failed the same https://getfedora.org/en/workstation/download/ https://labs.fedoraproject.org/security/download/index.html I wonder is this a well known issue ? on Fedora Bugzilla database ? FAIL: Thunderbird: Replying to thread

I use gmail. When I reply to a thread using Thunderbird, the response never shows up, but, if I include the email of the person who wrote the thread I am responding to, that person gets the email. On the other hand, if I log in to my gmail account, the I can post a response, that that response appears as a new, top-level discussion thread. How do I response to a message in a thread using Thunderbird and have the users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org accept it? Thanks Richard

In any case, I have to restart the machine by unplugging. How do I troubleshoot ? Fedora 21/ KDE Fedup from F20 Thunderbird is loading up Email Addreses in my AddressBook that I'm not doing myself. I'm get double entries of Email addresses I have entered. Fedup 20-21 has Screwed up a number of things in the F21 update that I did not have in F20. I guess I'm going to have to do a Fresh install of F22 to get rid of these problems.

Blinking wifi light - Intel Pro Dell Wireless WIFI 3945 card in Dell D630 Laptop

Greetings, I swapped out a stock Broadcom wifi card for an Intel 3945 card and now my Wifi indicator light blinks continually. I tried some of the recommendations that I've found (create an /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf file with the line: options iwlwifi led_mode=1 Subsequent rebooting does nothing to eliminate the annoyance. The reason that I swapped out the Broadcom card is because it would stop functioning after a certain irregular period of time, and "systemctl restart NetworkManager" would not restart it (resorting to plugging in the ethernet cable, or rebooting). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (either how to keep the Broadcom card from dying, or getting rid of the Intel card causing the wifi light to blink). Thank you. Fedora 21 Install: Stuck at "Installing software 12%"

Hello, Everyone Just put a new Seagate 2TB hard drive in the computer that I use as a media server. I proceeded to install the KDE spin of Fedora 21 from a flash drive. Everything went fine, but the progress indicator is stuck at "Installing software 12%" Has been stuck there for about 10 minutes or more. So, I WAS wondering what was wrong... Then I saw the following at the bottom of the screen: Fedora is now successfully installed and ready for you to use! Go ahead and reboot to start using it! In the lower right hand corner is a button that says "Quit" So, I'm going to click that button and see what happens... Steven P. Ulrick

chromecast: Fedora vs Windows

Sadly, I find that chromecast (under google chrome) performs much better under Windows 7 than under Fedora-22 (on the same laptop). Under Fedora the reception is very jumpy. Help. KDE Dolphin cannot read home directory, smbclient reads it fine

Hi Fedora 22 both machines, the server and the client. I have been looking for something on this problem but maybe my Google-Fu is not good enough. I set up Samba on my home server to share my home directory and a few other directories. Finally I got it all working except for Dolphin. I can do smbclient //server/homedirectory and I get the listing of my home directory. On the other hand if I go to Network->Samba Shares->Workgroup->server and try to open the Homes entry, I get an error: "The file or folder smb://server/homes does not exist What am I doing wrong? Hello, I run dnf update. At package 3935/4000, it failed, probably because a network issue (timeout) I am surprise than all the downloaded packages have be erased. When I restarted dnf update, it restart from scratch. Why? It could have just restart and continue downloading the missing 65 packages! Upgrade to fedora 22

Hello, After I upgrade a fedora 20 to fedora 22, I run (by mistake) yum update. It is now running for more than 5 hours (on a machine 10 year old with 3G of RAM and plenty of space on the disk). It looks like that it is stock on Processing Dependency: xz-libs (x82-32) I do not see anything else wrong! Should I be more patient, or should I kill the process and run dnf? OT - NFS group ignored

I just noticed that when accessing an NFS mount, the group is ignored. For example, on the server that shares the files via NFS that lists from the NFS client as: $ ls -l/nfs/web -rw-rw-r-- 1 root web_prog 491 Oct 16 2012 parse.php $ mount web:/ on /lvh1/web type nfs4 (rw,noatime,vers=4.0,rsize=524288,wsize=524288,namlen=255,soft,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=192.168.6.12,local_lock=none,addr=192.168.6.232) A user on the client machine that is a member of group web_prog cannot write the file (parse.php). If the user is changed from root to the client user's UID via chown on the server, the user on the client machine can then write the file. The server is on CentOS 7 and the client is on Fedora 21. If I do the same test from a CentOS 7 or CentOS 6 machine client, it works as expected. That is, the group permissions are honoured by the NFS client on those non-Fedora machines. So, I figure there is something wrong with my Fedora NFS configuration. Nothing shows up that is related to this issue when searching the Internet. What I have tried: Insure that Domain in /etc/idmapd.conf is the same on both client and server. Though the fact that the user ID is honoured would indicate that is correct. Insured that the numerical user ID and group ID match on both client and server, even though until now I always assumed that idmapd did not require the numerical IDs to match with NFS4 Any help would be appreciated. So, I am now at the point where xinit (calling startkde) has the KDE screen appearing, but ... The pointer-cursor appears but can not be moved by the mouse, and (after some timeout and the login screen appears) keyboard entry fails. What does one do to enable both the mouse and keyboard. Pinentry fails with gpg-agent and SSH

Hello, I'm running Fedora 22. I'm trying to setup GnuPG to have my SSH connections authenticated using my PGP authentication subkey that is located on my Yubikey Neo. I have a systemd unit starting the gpg-agent as following: /usr/bin/gpg-agent --homedir=%h/.gnupg --daemon --use-standard-socket And I have enabled SSH support in the configuration: enable-ssh-support pinentry-program /usr/bin/pinentry-gtk Other parts of the setup include adding the [keygrip][1] of my key to the ~/.gnupg/sshcontrol file, adding my [public key][2] to the remote host and declaring the [environment variables][3]. Globally looking at the various logs the setup wants to work, I can see that SSH is finding the key but actually failing to sign with it. Again, fedora upgrades using fedup ... Starting with Fedora 20, did ... stuff ... > fedup --network 21 --product=nonproduct ... stuff ... > fedup --network 22 --product=nonproduct So, now rebooted and it started. I have all my machines in multi-user mode just in case there is an issue with X. Now tried to start X ... and there was an issue. X starts but there is no mouse control (pointer on screen but the mouse does not move it) and after a minute or less I get an widget stating that the Plasma desktop closed unexpectedly. USB serial /dev/ttyUSB0 not set to group 'dialout' in F22

Since I've upgraded to F22 x86_64, I haven't been able to access serial ports from a user account in the dialout group. Doing an ls /dev/ttyUSB0 shows that the device special file is there, but the group is not set to dialout: $ ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0 crw-rw-r--. 1 root root 188, 0 Jul 25 03:29 /dev/ttyUSB0 Since the device file exists, udev is obviously finding the hardware, which is an FTDI TTL-232R, and it works fine for root. The udev rule to set the device's group to dialout appears to be present: $ grep dialout /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/*.rules /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules:KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*[0-9]|pppox[0-9]*|ircomm[0-9]*|noz[0-9]*|rfcomm[0-9]*", GROUP="dialout" Has anyone else seen this problem? New linux kernel getrandom call seems to be missing in Fedora. Anyone know why?

There's a new getrandom call in the kernel since 3.19. When I look in the /usr/include/linux/random.h, it is there, but commented out. Since this call uses /dev/urandom or /dev/random, it is far better than the rand () and random () calls, which are linear congruential and repeat after only 2**31 calls. The PRNG in the kernel is a modified mersenne twister, and the repeat is, from memory, ~2**1700. Not to mention that it is modified, and so is better. Disk partition

Hello, I have a disk that I would like to modify the partition table. Right now it has 18 partitions. I would like to keep the partitions 1 to 6, 8, 9 and 14 to 18 unchanged and I would like to reorganize the other ones partitions: 7, 10 to 13, for example the 10 to 13 would become only 2. Can I keep the numbering of the partitions that I wish to keep the same? Remote install of F21 will not let me ssh to computer...

I am installing F21 to several remote computers. In the grub.cfg menu I added 'inst.sshd' and added sshpw and text mode to ks.cfg so that I could login and monitor the install process. I have done this on several computers that are in an other city and I can't login during the install or after the install has completed and rebooted, However, I have remotely installed on several computers that are on the local network and have been able to login during the installation and after the computer rebooted. One interesting point, on 1 computer after about 24 hours I was able to login. Do not know why it started working. I have looked at the anaconda log files and can not determine where the info on a ssh login should be located. A search of the web did not provide any info ether. Thanks for any help, David

This is odd ... and I might be missing something stupid, but ... I am trying to build an sd card for my raspberry pi using rather nice *python* program that I've used for YEARS ... Mouse wheel acceleration problem

Hi, after updating F21->F22, I noticed immediately that the mouse wheel has got some nasty acceleration. Example: I open a large pdf document, and as soon as I begin to scroll, I'm on the last page. After that, scrolling works at normal speed. The same happens when scrolling a website in Firefox: at first wheel action the scroll speed is extremely high, and at the next touch, all is back to normal. This behaviour is driving me insane, and I could't find a solution so far. Is it something with XFCE, Xorg, whatever? I don't know. Is anybody here encountering the same phenomenon, and what to do about it? What I know so far is that it came with the F22 update. Thanks, Heinz

Help Compiling Static Binary

For some time, I've been using the minidlna program to serve media to TVs, etc, in my house. Unfortunately, recent updates to the ffmpeg suite broke the program: Certainly library calls no longer work. I'm therefore trying to build a static binary against the last version of ffmpeg that worked. I understand that these aren't fedora-supported programs, but I think the question is really more general, namely: how exactly one goes about building a static binary. What I've done is: ./configure --enable-static make But I get linking errors: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ljpeg /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lid3tag /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lsqlite3 /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lavformat /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lavutil /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lexif /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lFLAC /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -logg /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lvorbis /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpthread /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lc /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status The libraries are all there, though, where one would expect to find them. And non-static compilation works fine (with the right version of ffmpeg). Is there something I need to pass to configure to make this work? Alternatively, is it possible to install older ffmpeg libraries, etc, alongside the newer ones and tell minidlna to use those? If so, how? Creating kvm instance remotely

Hi, I have a fedora22 server with libvirt/kvm/qemu installed and would like to use it to create a number of kvm virtual instances remotely, non-interactively, according to my parameters (memory, disk layout, package options, etc). I'm aware of kickstart, but have never used it. Is that the best option, or is something like chef or puppet easier? I'd really like to create a basic 8GB, 1G RAM fedora22 server setup with a minimal install. I've experimented with virt-install, but that apparently doesn't provide the ability to select all of the install config options like language, disk layout, IP address, etc. I'd appreciate any pointers to documents, or tips here, that could help me get started doing this more quickly... Thunderbird fails to send emails on the first request (per account)

So now that I have solved my screen problem I am having a weird annoying problem with Thunderbird which is failing (time out error, but very fast response) to send email on the first "send click" on every account. I see that dnf, in its infinite wisdom, has classified ignoring packages it can't find as a bug, therefore if you say dnf install `cat f22-missing.txt` to install as much stuff as possible in your new f22 as you used to have in f20, it will find the very first missing rpm (and ONLY the first), tell you it isn't in the repos, and quit. See: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1224485 So you delete it from the list and try again, which let's you find the 2nd one, repeat for several weeks, or discover there is a yum-deprecated out there and run: yum-deprecated install `cat f22-missing.txt` which will actually install everything it can and ignore the ones it can't find, thus saving you many hours of fixing the list or installing one package at a time with dnf.

external screen no longer support native resolution

Hi! I just upgraded to F22 and my external monitor (a Koios 24" 1920x1200) no longer works in its native resolution. I can only get 1280 x 768 to display. Everything was working well before. My video chip is the Intel HD Graphics 5500 (Broadwell GT2) (the laptop is a X1 Carbon 3rd generation). GNOME display settings does offer the native resolution but it just doesn't work (I get an screen switched off). How would you troubleshooting this? Thank you. Fred

I would really like to know more about the inner workings and eventually get RH certified, so I'm wondering what you long-time users or RH certified folks would recommend book-wise. I've seen Mark Sobell's book on Amazon but it's a year old and I'm worried it would already be outdated. Besides the official Fedora Documentation, how can I learn more about the inner workings of my system? Many times when something goes wrong I have to appeal to others for advice, and while there is nothing wrong with that, I would like to know enough about my system to be able to troubleshoot and diagnose just about anything. I would also like to help others, and someday contribute back to the project. Right now I feel too ignorant to submit bug reports or try to contribute anything. Hi, In F22 edge flip makes me crazy :) and after lot of google and trying to find the right value using dconf-edito, I still cannot find a solution. Puppet in Fedora 22 working?

Hello everyone, I was away from my installation for 6 months. I came back and upgraded to Fedora 22 (as Fedora 20/21 was giving me problems with FreeSWITCH and other things). After doing so I find that Puppet does not work. It doesn't seem to find any of the hiera (yaml and json backends) defined nodes get their catalog (they get one, but without the classes they should have) at all. Has anyone seen this? Any suggestions on how to go about remedying the problem? Thank you, Trever

Fedora 22 KDE spin, no wireless

All; I did a new install of Fedora 22 - the KDE spin on a macbook pro, Fedora 21 worked well on this laptop but with Fedora 22 I cannot get the wireless enabled, when I click the network icon in the system tray I only see the wired connection and it does not show the check box to enable/disable wireless... I installed kmod-wl but when I do a 'modprobe wl' I get this: FATAL: Module wl not found Thoughts? Thanks in advance

rebooting with new kernel

I did a dnf update, got the new kernel, uname -a Linux pauls-server 4.0.7-300.fc22.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jun 29 22:15:06 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux rebooted and... a blinking cursor on a black background.. this seems to happen everytime now when I get a new kernel in F22, x86_64. So I boot a boot-repair CD, redo the grub, and reboot with a grub menu. my F22 is /dev/sdb6, and when I do a grub2-mkconfig it finds all of my OSes on sda & sdb. once I manually do the grub2-mkconfig & grub2-install /dev/sda I can reboot & grub shows all of my OSes. But if I just do the dnf update, get a new kernel, and reboot.. blank. Not sure what the update does, but it obviously takes out my grub install, not sure what it replaces it with. what should I look for, or what am I doing wrong? -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux User #367800 and new counter #561587

more nitpicky pedantry regarding docker on fedora 22 ... if i read the man page for "docker-pull" on my f22 system, i see: "This command pulls down an image or a repository from a registry. The DNF documentation desperately attempts to avoid actually saying anything :-(. For pluginpath it says: List of directories that are searched for plugins to load. Plugins found in any of the directories in this configuration option are used. The default contains a Python version-specific path. The installed /etc/dnf/dnf.conf file doesn't explicitly say anything about pluginpath, so it must be hard coded somewhere. So what the heck is the actual contents of this pluginpath config setting on fedora 22? Where do I install a .py module if I'm trying to write my own plugin?

Building/loading dahdi from asterisk

Hi, I'm really stuck with getting asterisk started. I've built and install the dahdi asterisk modules, but they don't load automatically on boot. The asterisk-dahdi package includes /etc/rc.d/init.d/dahdi which runs "/bin/systemctl start dahdi.service" but it fails to load the modules. My question is, how do I troubleshoot this? How do I get more information to find out why it isn't automatically load the modules? If I just run "modprobe dahdi" manually, it loads the modules. I've looked through the logs, and it just says "Started LSB: DAHDI kernel modules." without any further information. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alex

Fedora-22 KDE panel

I've just installed Fedora-22 from a Fedora-22 Live KDE usb stick. After dnf-installing a few packages, most things seem to be working, but I'm puzzled by the apparent lack of a panel, or if the bar at the top with Activities and Time are the panel then I'm puzzled by the lack of icons in the panel. I read advice to right-click in the panel, but if this is the panel that has no effect. Also I miss the multiple desktops I had in Fedora-21 KDE. Have these been abolished in Plasma-5? A very ignorant question - I see everyone refers to KDE Plasma. Ideas for using journalctl to show me the following would be appreciated: - start at the end of the log - use shortened hostname - shows only info in the former /var/log/maillog or /var/log/messages - piped through a searchable pager Typing "less /var/log/maillog" requires far less typing, more easily remembered, and is easily searchable. Systemd user services

Hi, I wanted to run systemd user services, in linger mode, meaning they run as a regular user and hang around without an active session. This worked nicely for the default target. When I changed to a different target however, the systemd user is not working anymore. Any thoughts? This is what I did step by step: - Enable linger mode and reboot: # loginctl enable-linger user - Now from a console login when I do: $ systemctl --user status I see systemd user service is running. - I add a service like this: $ systemctl --user enable emacs $ systemctl --user start emacs Looking at the status now, I see emacs is running as expected. This was just a test, I actually want to run mpd, but I was not getting any sound without a graphical session, so temporarily I switched to a graphical target with: # systemctl isolate graphical.target # my default is runlevel3 IIUC, when I do this all services get restarted. So I wasn't surprised when there was not running emacs (checked with pgrep). I was surprised however to see I cannot query the user session anymore. $ systemctl --user enable emacs.service Failed to get D-Bus connection: No such file or directory It is even more surprising since the systemd user service is still running! $ ps -uf -p 14301 USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND lightdm 14301 0.0 0.1 45004 4864 ? Excessive verbosity

The verbosity of systemd and its associated logging functions is out of control. It drives me crazy, and I can only hope that this attempt to complain constructively will be heeded. After recovering from the disaster of filling my root filesystem while away from home, I'm attempting to bring back some discipline to /var/log. Aside from the outrage of the journal system, /var/log/httpd/error_log and /var/log/audit/audit.log are the worst offenders. The httpd errors are of this recurring general form: [Sat Jul 18 10:48:39.918368 2015] [:error] [pid 10957] [client 192.168.2.1:54848] PHP Deprecated: Non-static method GalleryUtilities::isEmbedded() should not be called statically, assuming $this from incompatible context in /usr/share/gallery2/modules/core/classes/GalleryUrlGenerator.class on line 381, referer: http://datix.us/ and seem to be due to a major screwup in the gallery2 code with respect to static vs. non-static methods, whatever that means. A whack-a-mole debugging process is ongoing to fix these. Thanks to Joel for responding to BZ 1214128 and trying to fix 'em. The auditd system seems grotesque to me. It purports to insert code in every single system call and report on it. This can only seriously degrade Linux's efficiency. Others have noticed the excessive volume of reporting and tried to suppress it. One recommends removing the audit package, or disabling auditd, but that merely transfers the reporting to /var/log/messages. In https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/1311 I read that the overhead is so great that it was "AGREED: turn off syscall auditing for all processes by default." with this to be done by Add something like this to /etc/audit/rules.d/audit.rules: # This suppresses syscall auditing for all tasks started # with this rule in effect. Remove it if you need syscall # auditing. -a task,never Sure enough, that's the way Fedora 22 is delivered. However, it doesn't work! The audit.log is still swamped with unwanted drivel. Following a clue in https://www.redhat.com/archives/linux-audit/2012-January/msg00012.html I have added these commands to /etc/rc.d/rc.local with good results: # Stop auditd from writing so much crap auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=MAC_IPSEC_EVENT auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=USER_AUTH auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=USER_ACCT auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=CRED_REFR auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=CRED_DISP auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=CRED_ACQ auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=USER_START auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=USER_END auditctl -a exclude,always -F msgtype=SERVICE_START Now the only msgtype left in audit.log is type=LOGIN, which occurs whenever a cronjob fires off. Since I'm a big user of cronjobs, there are still too many of these. In whose perverted mind is running a cronjob related in any way to logging in? While venting, there are two other problems with the audit system: 1) The auditctl man page says to combine multiple -F options in a single command for efficiency. It doesn't work. 2) With all the verbosity of audit.log, nowhere is the date shown. thunderbird+enigmail issue on fedora 21

Bonjour, I have an issue with thunderbird+enigmail on fedora 21: TB is unable to send a signed message and enigmail complains that it cannot find the gpg key. Every time pinentry-curses is stuck and uses 100% of CPU. Using Enigmail>Manage keys shows that the key is there and valid... What's wrong? The command given is "systemctl tuned enable" when it should be "systemctl enable tuned" I know this is a bit old, fedora 19, however if i found it online trying to improve my setup i'm sure many others will as well.

Fedora-22/KDE clipboard not working

When I highlight text in Fedora-21 it is transferred to the Clipboard, which I can access by the scissors icon ("Clipboard Contents") in my panel. In Fedora-22 the clipboard icon is changed - it looks like 2 sheets of paper but is still called "Clipboard Contents" - and highlighted text no longer appears there. Fedora-22 perfect (almost)

Having re-installed Fedora-22/KDE after a disastrous mis-installation (thanks for the help, Ed and Chris), everything is as it was under Fedora-21, with one tiny loss, to do with adding applications to the panel. I can add most applications by the curious process of right-clicking on the K-icon, going to Alternatives and switching to Application Menu - I can then go to the application in the Application menu and click on "Add to Panel". Then I switch back. Is this a bug, or a curious "improvement"? In any case, what this does not allow me to do - as I could - is add to the panel an item I have created by right-clicking on the K-icon then on Edit Applications. (These are mainly buttons I have created to ssh into remote hosts.) This is only a tiny inconvenience - I can still add the item to my Favorites, so it just takes an extra click to go to the remote host. But if I could complete the task I would be completely happy. One other small problem is that it seems much harder to paste text from the Clipboard. Have other people experienced this? yumex-dnf upgrade fails

Every time I start yumex-dnf and it shows updates available, selecting them all and then clicking the "Apply" button gives a dialog box showing "Error(s) in search for dependencies". Clone a system to an encrypted drive

I have a running Fedora 21 system. I would like to make a backup of it to a USB drive, a clone that can be booted. I know how to do all the "normal" stuff (partition, LVM, mkfs, rsync, and GRUB), but I'd like the USB drive to be encrypted, and I don't know how to set that up manually (I haven't messed with encrypted filesystems under Linux before). The system I'm backing is also headless, so no GUI tools. Pointers, tips, suggestions? Thanks. -- Chris Adams <linux(a)cmadams.net>

rpmbuild error in F22 (looking for desktop file)

Hello, I am trying to make a rpm out of the following application: https://github.com/apandada1/typhoon but my spec file, created from looking at the batti.spec file looks for a desktop file, rather than a desktop.in file. What I don't understand is where it figures out how to look for a desktop file. Any suggestions/help? I don't have a lot of experience with rpmbuild and spec files. Windows 8 Dual boot lost after Fedora upgrade

I've finally decided to have a go at fixing the problem where the Windows 8 option disappeared from my GRUB menu when I upgraded from F19 to F20. Working through various Google responses I've found that i had a load of stuff missing, including * .mod files * /boot/etc/EFI/Microsoft I installed grub2-efi-modules-2.00-27.fc20.x86_64 and then copied ntfs.mod and parted_msdos.mod to /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/x86_64-efi/ which got rid of some of the errors I then mkdir /boot/etc/EFI/Microsoft/Boot and copied bootmgfw.efi from /windows/Windows/Boot/EFI/bootmgfw.efi to /boot/etc/EFI/Microsoft/Boot However, although I've fixed most of the error messages, I've still got the error: efi: file `/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi` not found. I'm now stuck. NetworkManager-openvpn and NetworkManager-openvpn-gnome

Hi, I wiped my F21 Workstation and did a clean install of F22, only with the XFCE spin this time. In F21 with GNOME, I had quite a few .ovpn files that I imported using NetworkManager. They worked fine. In F22 with XFCE, NetworkManager would not import them, giving the error: "Error: does not look like a Cisco AnyConnect Compatible VPN (openconnect) VPN connection (parse failed)" This is with NetworkManager-openvpn installed. I was stumped, and after using dnf list NetworkManager* I saw NetworkManager-openvpn-gnome. On a hunch, I installed it, and a new option shows up in NetworkManager for "OpenVPN" and my .ovpn files are all successfully importing again. What I'm wondering is why doesn't NetworkManager-openvpn provide the same functionality? Why do I have to install the -gnome specific files (under XFCE) to get what one would assume comes with the -openvpn package? It was easy to work around, but I'm just curious why NetworkManager-openvpn doesn't create an OpenVPN option or allow users to import OpenVPN files. binary executes in an SELinux type other than its label

"courierlogger" is labeled "courier_exec_t" in the filesystem, but appears to execute under "system_mail_t". I think the former type is being treated as an alias for the latter, but I don't remember where I'd look for information on that. The problem is that when upgrading the courier-authlib package, a preuninstall script runs "authdaemond stop", which in turn uses courierlogger to signal the running process to exit. Fedora low level tools

Are there any generic vanilla tools for Linux or specific to Fedora that can run in standalone mode from a bootable cd/dvd and can be used to undervolt (i.e underclock) or overvolt (overclock) the cpu? Especially for the unlocked AMD cpu's.

system response issue

I started a tar command from one external eSATA drive (ext4), connected to eSATA port, out to a USB flash drive (with vfat). The USB stick is touted to support 50MB/s write, 160MB/s read. The USB port itself is USB 2.0 (480MBits/s). The desktop (Mate) response goes down the tubes. I ran top and found that cpu is only 3% usage by firefox. rest are a few at 1%, and rest showing 0%. Load average: load average: 5.95, 5.81, 6.05 Wow!!!! Why? Is there a configuration tweak to grant more cycles to the DT (mouse, KB) interaction with other GUI based programs?

Fedora 21 on mackbook air - no tilde key

Hi All; I've installed Fedora 21 KDE spin on a 2015 Macbook air. I installed the rpmfusion repos and enabled kmod-wl and kernel-devel packages to enable wireless support. At this point most everything works, the screen brightness keys, keyboard backlight keys, keyboard volume keys, etc all work. However if I press the tilde/back tick key I get a les than sign (<) and if I press shift-tilde I get a greater than sign (>) Anyone know how to enable the proper behavior for these keys? OT Password problem -

I bought a used Dell Latitude E4310 that I want to replace Windows7 on with Fedora-22. Unfortunately the BIOS is locked and I do not have the admin password for it. A phone call to Dell was unproductive and none of the passwords offered in an on-line application work. Does anyone know what I can do to access this computer. I can return it, bought through Newegg, but it looks good so far, in new condition and the price is right. It even has a working battery. I considered opening it and removing the bios battery which I assume would return it to the default conditions which I believe is no password set. I have 2 500G hard drives partitioned with a few 'normal' partitions for /boot, swap, etc but mostly in a raid 1 array, which is divided into several LVM partitions. For many Fedora releases, I have done fresh installs, preserving the /home LVM partition, and rotating the root partition among several 30-40G LVM partitions for /. This has always worked splendidly until Fedora 21/22. Recently I decided that it was time to move up to Fedora 22, and with failing that, to Fedora 21. I have tried several Fedora 22 and Fedora 21. live install disks (desktop, server) and the server isos. With the live disks, the installer doesn't see my existing LVM partitions, so I can't try to install into them. With the 21 and 22 server isos, the installer sees the LVM partitions and appears to proceed normally, but the final reboot boots into a grub rescue shell, and the only partition visible to this shell is my /boot partition. I also tried the Fedora 22 netinstall iso, which also ultimately resulted in reboot into the grub rescue shell. I have googled several variations of 'grub doesn't recognize LVM partitions' without turning up anything helpful. Have there been changes to the LVM software that might result in an incompatibility between grub and older LVM versions? Best, -jmw-

So, in an OpenStack environment I'm trying to use, F22 Atomic can't get an IP/routing info, but F21 Atomic *can*. The first sign that something's up is a non-trivial pause on "A start job is running for Network Manager Wait Online", followed by cloud-init failing: [ 36.377396] cloud-init[721]: 2015-07-09 20:48:49,254 - util.py[WARNING]: Route info failed: Unexpected error while running command. Nvidia issue in fedora 22

Hello, I am using an Asus EN210 geforce 210 VGA card. I have akmod-nvidia-340xx installed. Since the last two kernel updates, whenever I try run Nvidia X server settings, I get the following error message: "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server." When I do that in terminal, I get the following error message: "WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file. New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf." It makes no difference. I also reverted back to 304xx, which doesn't work at all. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I finally had some cycles to open the laptop and cleanup up the old dried up grease off the cpu and the heat sink and applied the arctic silver. I smeared it in thin sheet on both the cpu and the heat sink's contact surface. I buttoned the thing back up and installed fc20 from DVD iso. All went well during the install. I booted and opened the file browser to browse the boot drive. No problems. I immediately opened the file browser again to seperately browse another drive and it crashed instantly after the gui of the 2nd file browser came up. I uploaded the screen image of crash message to https://www.sendspace.com/file/exy97h I noticed that during the installation of fc20, the air coming out of the exhaust vent was almost scalding if I kept my finger there for about a minute or so. By scalding, I mean if I had touched a metal surface of that temperature for say 30 seconds, I would have felt some pain. Also, I noticed that the cooling fan remained at normal operating speed, instead of spinning faster, as I usually hear it spin fast for about a few seconds when I power it on. So, I am not sure whether the problem is the fan or the cpu. P.S: I also ran the memtest 86 full tests of 1 pass. I installed fc20 after it had reached somewhere near the middle of pass 2. It had detected no errors. 10 hours had passed since I had started the memtest86. I am not sure if each pass would run different tests. Perhaps someone can expand on that.

I'm looking at reducing my dependency on dual booting and VMs to run Fedora and am thinking of an Intel NUC or possibly a Minnowboard (or maybe both and eventually setup glusterfs). Page 17, figure 3 show a block diagram of a candidate board http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23090/eng/D54250WYB_D34010WYB_TechProdSpec0… What I'm wondering is, there are four USB connectors, two front, two back. Each pair is represented with a single block with two arrows to the CPU. Do the two arrow implies two distinct buses? i.e. each of the four connectors offers 5Gbps bandwidth? In contrast, there's also two USB 2.0 ports in the front, noted as both dual-port, and with a single arrow to the CPU, which suggests to me it's a single 480Mbps bus shared between two connectors. Then on page 24, the text description says even less than the diagram suggests: The board supports eight USB ports. All eight ports are high-speed, full-speed, and low-speed capable. Have you looked at fail2ban? It watches /var/log/secure for break in attempts/failed logins and dynamically adds iptables rules to block the bad guys. Firefox and flash-plugin on F20

I have a strange happening. On my F19.x86_64 home server, I have both firefox-34.0-1.fc19.x86_64 and the latest Adobe flash-plugin-11.2.202.468-release.x86_64 installed. About:plugins shows that it is the correct plugin, and all seems to work as expected. On my F20.x86_64 laptop, again, I have both firefox-38.0.5-1.fc20.x86_64 and the latest Adobe flash-plugin-11.2.202.468-release.x86_64 installed. About:plugins however shows that version 11.2.202.466 is the current installed version of the flash plugin being used by firefox. A quick look at my systems shows that there are only 2 libflashplayer.so files: /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so And a quick check of both of them shows: strings /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so | grep 11.2.202 FlashPlayer_11_2_202_468_FlashPlayer LNX 11,2,202,468 11.2.202.468 drm/%s/%s/%s/11.2.202.468%s So, if the file in the location that firefox about:plugins shows that it is 11.2.202.468, then why does firefox say it is: Shockwave Flash File: libflashplayer.so Path: /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so Version: 11.2.202.466 State: Enabled (STATE_VULNERABLE_UPDATE_AVAILABLE) Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202 This is weird! -- Kevin J. Does anyone know how to setup Google-Chromes handling of mailto links in webpages ? I have run the xfce default handlier application, which has Google-Chrome as my preferred webbrowser and Thunderbird as my mail reader. Everytime I click a mailto link either nothing happens, or I get the message failed to run MailReader (input/output error)...not much help. I have checked the mimelist and it has set links up this way: [Default Applications] text/html=userapp-google-chrome-AGO0MX.desktop x-scheme-handler/http=exo-web-browser.desktop x-scheme-handler/https=exo-web-browser.desktop x-scheme-handler/about=exo-web-browser.desktop x-scheme-handler/mailto=exo-mail-reader.desktop application/x-extension-eml=mozilla-thunderbird.desktop the xfce4.helpers file contains this: MailReader=thunderbird TerminalEmulator=xfce4-terminal WebBrowser=google-chrome FileManager=Thunar There is a link in /usr/bin to thunderbird. In the mime list the x-scheme-handlers for mailto is exo-mail-reader.desktop, which runs MailReader I don't understand any of this---apparently xfce changed the way these things are handled in the latest release. Can someone clear away the fog ? Thanks

Many emails in my Inbox no longer display. I mean I can see the emails listed in chronological order from oldest at top to newest at bottom. But many older emails simply do not display when I click on the email in the list. I have exited TB and restarted it to no avail.

Using journalctl

Hi all, I've used journalctl to do some really basic things, but I'm trying to use it to view the former /var/log/maillog, and haven't been able to figure out how. I understand I can use it to search for a specific priority, but haven't figure out how to show only today's mail.* facility logs, using the short form hostname. I also understand you can view logs for a specific process or pid, but that's also not what I want. Ideas greatly appreciated. A FAQ or general usage doc would really be appreciated (beyond just the man page). It just seems like a lot more typing than just "tail -f /var/log/maillog" when that's all I need. Thanks, Alex

Strange booting problem

Laptop: Dell Latitude E6510. OS: F20 with all updates Grub installed on sda. Power up ,and after bios's internal works, I do not get the grub menu. All I get is an empty screen with the underscore cursor blinking at upper left corner. Reboot. Press F12 to get the BIOS boot menu. Select Internal HDD Boots just fine.

F22 unusable - system freezes on login

(First try apparently got eaten; apologies if this is a duplicate.) I just installed F22 (KDE spin) from scratch on a new Dell M6800. The Live CD seemed to run okay, but when I try to boot the installed OS, it (almost¹) invariably freezes when I try to log in. The machine is effectively unusable as a result. Has anyone else encountered this? Can anyone recommend a course of diagnostics? I'm unable to even get the machine into a state that would allow remote login (over ssh anyway, and I don't know offhand how to set up serial login), and I've not seen anything in /var/log/messages that might indicate a problem. (¹ *Once and only once* I was able to log in, but the system froze as soon as I tried to run an application. Also, I can log in in single-user mode, but this isn't good for much but running dnf and fiddling with enabled services. I *have* applied all updates as of a few hours ago to no effect.) -- Matthew

Fedora 20 and Centos7 - install with sw RAID5 complete but won't boot

I'm trying to build a new server using 3xSeagate Baracuda ST3000DM001 3TB drives and RAID5. I tried initially using a F20 DVD but have also downloaded Centos 7 and tried that with the same effect. I set up /boot /boot/efi and swap as standard partitions. I then set up / /home and /var/bacula as RAID5 with 200GB 200GB and whatever is left as the file sizes. The installation and filesystem selection is all done through the installation GIU. I then complete the installation without incident. However, after rebooting the PC just sits there saying Varifying DMI Pool Data.......... which I#'m guessing is the end of the POST. The HDD light is on but nothing happens until it times out and tries to boot from DVD. The Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3/SI with a BIOS date of 2010-12-31. Any ideas why it won't boot? Is it a mobo issue, or something wrong with the disk configs?

GDM Login issue in F22

Hello all, Recently I have seen that whenever I boot up my system, F22, it goes to a text prompt (I assume all processes for runlevel 5 are complete) and displays "Please enter root password to continue" and then after around 30-40 seconds, it displays the GDM. Thunderbird blinking browser notice -

This is Fedora 22, 64 bit, XFCE, etc. with Thunderbird 38.0.1 When I click on a URL in an e-mail message it immediately starts a blinking browser notice at the top left. I know, I've just selected a URL and don't need that annoying/distracting box. It's as though I am being implored to go look at it immediately but I would like to continue reading messages before doing so. Does anyone know how to eliminate it or at the least stop the stupid blinking? Google hasn't helped me ... "software": how does it really work?

Hi, I'm on Fedora 22 default gnome desktop. I've got a few questions about "software" 1) how does it integrate with dnf? for instance if I do "dnf history" I do not see any of the transactions done with the "software" app. 2) do "software" and dnf have the same source? there are packages available only via dnf. 3) when I check for updates "software" most of the times says "up to date - nothing to do - checked at XX:YY" (maybe 2 minutes ago) Then I force it to check and often it finds something to update. Once it is a coincidence, but is it possible that so often updates are published just in the few minutes between the automatic and manual check? Andrea

How do you store a Live Feed from a guitar

Everyone, I finally have enough time to play with my computer and guitar at the same time. Does anyone have a method of storing a live feed from a guitar. I have a guitar with an acoustic pickup that I normally use with a regular amplifier. I now have a usb audio cable from Alesis LineLink that I can use to connect my Fedora 22 machine to the acoustic pick up of the guitar. I connected the usb audio cable to the computer and to my guitar, but was not able to get any software that that was on my F22 machine to recognize the the live feed. Have any of you used this kind of equipment or other kinds of equipment to store a live feed from a guitar acoustic pickup. I would like to be able to play and store a song or two and then experiment with mixing the sounds. Any suggestions???? Greg Ennis
