DNF update
by jarmo
3RD time happened, when doing "dnf update" XFCE crashed and
had log in again.
I know, there is bug somewhere and people have been told to do update
in virtual console.
Ok, twice I did in in console running in X. But now I used virtual
console and when returned back into X, it crashed and had to log in
again.
What I have noticed, this have happened every time, when there has been
update for SYSTEMD.
X does not crash, when there is updates for some others.
In my case, pure login is no good, I loose USB ports, what I use
controlling hamradio stuff, so need reboot after crash. Hope after
these crashes, that my logging database is not violated :(

kde plasmashell eating cpu - FC24 all updates on INTEL Q6700
by Andy Paterson
I have just discovered (one of?) the reasons plasmashell was eating so much
cpu and memory on my system.
I have dual monitors and in circa FC20 I could get a panel on both screens
then something happened (and I suspect I tried apparently unsuccessfully to
restore a panel to one of the screens) and pretty well from then on the
plasmashell problem grew.
After looking on the kde lists for a clue as to what the problem might be (I
notice its a "well known bug") I espied recently a comment about someone
deleting a panel and finding there was another panel underneath!!!!
So I deleted the panel on the screen that had one - lo' it was "still there" -
I deleted that ..... for about 10 of them!!!!!
The last one disappeared - but I could restore it (undo the delete) Now with
just one panel my kde desktop has finally reverted to sanity after about 6
months!
I will now try to work out exactly what happened and when it happened.
Anyone else seen this?

change folder heirarchy in a tar file without extracting to disk
by Jerome Yanga
Is there a way to change the folder structure inside a tar file without extracting it to disk first?
For example, I have the following file/folder structure in a tar file, test.tar.
dir1/
dir1/file1
dir1/file2
I would like the contents to be modified to.
dir2/dir1/
dir2/dir1/file1
dir2/dir1/file2
Thank you in advance.

Miracast/WiDi Support for Fedora Workstation 24?
by 8bits1beard@gmail.com
I have a WiDi enabled chipset on my laptop and when I was on Windows, really enjoyed using wireless monitors rather than using a HDMI cable. I've found mentions of MiracleCast, a *nix implementation of Miracast, but development seems to have fizzled out. Has anyone got this working with Fedora? Thoughts on why this technology seems to be lacking in the *nix world? Seems like every TV and even new Dell monitors have this built in so IMHO it's not some fringe feature anymore.

adding a package to Fedora's EPEL
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am the packager for pdf-stapler in Fedora. I would like to make this available on EPEL so that CentOS, etc users may benefit. How do I do that?
Many thanks,
Ranjan

System running, which I admin mostly remote.
Now, after last "dnf update" I can't reboot system, or systemd does not

kind responses
systemctl status httpd
Failed to get properties: Connection timed out
An when I try
systemctl --failed
Failed to list units: Connection timed out
systemctl daemon-reload
Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: Timeout was reached (g-io-error-quark, 24)
Failed to execute operation: Connection timed out
What has gone wrong? I see lots of zombies when do ps ax.

You are running a terminal under X, so you are susceptible to the
problem if you have hybrid graphics. You could try the systemctl
command Adam mentioned to confirm, knowing that it will crash X if you
meet the criteria, and lose anything in progress.
What Adam is saying is you need to run dnf in a virtual console
environment (Ctl-Alt-[F2-F6]) to avoid the problem. This is non-X, and
so even if X crashes, the dnf update won't be affected.
There is nothing wrong with running a terminal under X for other
purposes, just with running dnf update, and even then only for
people that meet the criteria.

Do you mean if the host OS has a driver ie F25?

Not sure why I would need to be emulating IDE . .

Correct.

OK, I am still at a loss as to how to proceed . . I had assumed that I
would need to do a dd of the old SCSI drive with it's 6 partitions and
create an image that I could move to my F25 workstation and from there
work out how to load into virt-manager or something . .
Thanks,
Phil.

I think I can confirm this advice. I always run dnf manually from the
command line, in a VT logged in as root. And I can run X while doing
this and I've never had a dnf update issue. I don't use the
graphical update tools, and always have PackageKit disabled to prevent
duplicate downloads of updates.
