cups - the printer is not responding

Hi, I have a network printer (that I can see on the computer server browser at localhost:631). When I try to use it, the jobs are not processed... - and I get the message * " the printer is not responding".* I fund this information at link ; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS/Troubleshooting#All_jobs_are_.22T… ------------------------- All jobs are "The printer is not responding" On networked printers, you should check that the name that CUPS uses as its connection URI resolves to the printer's IP via DNS, e.g. If your printer's connection looks like this: lpd://BRN_020554/BINARY_P1 then the hostname 'BRN_020554' needs to resolve to the printer's IP from the server running CUPS ------------------------ I understand what this means... but I don't know how to accomplice the task*: * * resolve that the IP from the server running CUPS * Any help to do this will be appreciated. People, My usual mode of operation when updating OSes is to use a new Hard Disk and install the latest version of the OS (sometimes bleeding edge) and to keep the old disk as an archive drive. So I have a lot of old drives and recently I have been going back through the old SATA and then IDE drives - which has been an interesting archaeological dig! Today I started looking at stuff on this old RH server which was used as a Qmail mail server, EZMLM mailing list manager and a host for a few small web sites. It had not been looked at since the machine had been turned off a long, long time ago - to my surprise it booted up with no problems! Now all I need to do is daisy-chain the Adaptec SCSI controller to an external box with another 4 SCSI drives in it to complete the archaeological exploration. It was a little strange but pleasant looking at all this very old stuff - knowing with hindsight how the users, lists and sites developed after their modest beginnings. I guess I got a bit nostalgic and decided to continue to keep the box (it is the only old box I have that can accommodate the old Adaptec ISA board) but it occurred to me that it would be an interesting exercise to try and virtualise the system - is this possible? - could I create an image from the old 2GB SCSI boot disk and run it as a virtual machine somehow? For the record, my first RH OS was v4.0 - which I used in a commercial environment (we told the boss it was an updated version of UNIX!) - I had used a variety of other distros for fun going back to Slackware and before that Softlanding Linux System (SLS): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softlanding_Linux_System RH upset me when they took their distro completely commercial and I was cranky for a while but I was very happy when RH finally realised their mistake and createde Fedora Core 1 - which I eagerly lept into! Also, I still have my first-ever (electronic) computer (I had a plastic one when I was kid that had three bits and the clock cycle involved manually pushing and pulling a lever . .) - an Exidy Sorcerer from 1978 which had to have programs and data loaded from audio audio cassettes (!): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exidy_Sorcerer and my first computer with floppy disks - the luggable Osborne 1 computer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_1 I wouldn't be surprised if I could still boot them up as well! . . although it would be a fair bit more messing around . . Playing Flash based DRM videos on Hotstar.com

Hi Everyone, I have a paid subscription of an online streaming service Hotstar.com in India. The problem is, they are using some Flash based DRM technique with their videos due to which they don't play on Fedora 24 Workstation. I only get a movie not loaded message in context menu of flash player. I searched about this issue and found few things to try like using freshplayer to get PepperFlash or installing the HAL shim library. But none of these methods seems to work with Fedora 24. Can anybody hep me out with this? It is so frustrating to go back to Windows just to watch my favorite streams. Thanks in advance. -- Regards, *Sumit Bhardwaj*

Installing programs in fedora - firefox

Hi, recently I re installed firefox (in order to have the new firefox 49). Till now, to install programs, I always used yum or rpm, and never I used the .tar file. After I unpacked the .tar file, I was immediately able to run the new version of firefox simply creating a new symbolic link point to the new version to the file executable, *without changing anything in the files** unpacked files inside the directory where I dowloaded **the file .tar** (/home/my_dir/Downloads)*. That is very simple as it is also very good … But I am asking to myself if I really made all in the right way.... Of course, in order to use an application, it is enough to run the executable file - But, under usual conditions, they are many other files that support the installation... Generally they are not inside the directory where I unpacked the .tar file,– Generally they are put in some appropriate directories.... and I didn't change anything never I modified or move files after I unpacked files in the original directory . The organization of the programs, inside the directories of the computer, is managed by the programs that manage the installation... and in my case I didn't make anything.. So I would ask what is the correct way to arrange files after to unpack the .tar file for a program like firefox. Thank you regards Angelo

F18 updates

I've got a box with F18 on it. It has not been connected to the internet for two years but I need to use it now for a while, after which I'll install a newer version. The first thing I did after connecting it was to run updates. I actually use it every time, even if I want the GUI. If you don't want to download all of the packages e dry time, the server install is the one you want. Cheers

resolution restricted after dnf update

I have a dual headed F23 system using a NVidia graphics card. Everything was working fine until today when I installed the latest set of updates. Both screens were set to 1280x1024 resolution. However, since I rebooted after completing the update, my right hand side screen is now limited to 1024/768. If I look in System Settings -> Display Configuration it correctly recognises my left screen as a CY765. However, the model of my right screen is no longer recognised, and just shows it as VGA-1 which is it's port. I'm certain that it used to know the model of that screen too. Can anyone suggest how I can get this resolved, or at least where to look to find the problem? Cheers Gary
