Is blacklist broken?
by David De Graaf
Is blacklisting broken?
I've created /etc/modprobe.d/wireless.conf with one line:
blacklist r8712u
and yet, after a reboot, the r8712u module is installed.
Why?
It isn't being used; if I run rmmod -vv r8712u it is removed
and nothing else changes. The wireless USB adapter still works,
because it is using a new r92su module.
The wireless adapter is a Rosewill; lsusb identifies it as:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191SU
802.11n WLAN Adapter
It has worked with the r8712u module for a long time, but recently
became intermitant and yesterday stopped altogether. It still works
fine with Fedora 24; but fails with kernel-4.10.12-200.fc25.x86_64.
So I fetched an experimental developmental new r92su module from
git clone https://github.com/chunkeey/rtl8192su.git
After building and installing, the r92su module works perfectly.
I've solved the main problem, but am left with the blacklist
mystery. Apparently "blacklist r8712u" does prevent r8712u from being
used, but not from being installed.
Is that not weird?

Please move bug #1428988 out of maintainers private area
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi,
After some personal disputs with some other reporter, the package
maintainer of cinnamon-screensver decided to simply close the report
#1428988.
When I asked him to please re-open it - so that at least ABRT reports
could be attached to give some idea how serious the issue is
, the response was simply "fuck you if you don't like my attitude".
After the ropic was brought up here, he moved the report to his
private area, which means no new ABRT reports can be attached.
At least according to retrace (
https://retrace.fedoraproject.org/faf/reports/1429946/ ) the problem
affects more than just a handful of users.
So no matter wether the maintainer is willed to work on the report or
not, for users it should be possible to add a "mee too" without beeing
personally attacked.
Please re-open the report and set permissions to "normal".
Best regards, Clemens

[RFC] delta-repository-metadata
by Igor Gnatenko
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256
Hello users and developers,
We had presented deltametadata project at DevConf.CZ 2017[0], goal of
this project is to minimize bandwidth required on clients to update
repository metadata (repomd.xml, primary.xml, etc.) which would improve
user experience with DNF.
So, we have DNF plugin which acts
How to try it?
1. dnf -y copr enable @rpm-software-management/deltamd
2. dnf -y install dnf-plugin-zsync
If something doesn't work, look into /var/log/dnf.log.
We would like you to try it out and give feedback, it is very important
for us! Just send it as reply to this message..
P.S. F25 and above are supported

Dell XPS fans
by InvalidPath
I believe the latest kernel update has messed with the fans on my XPS 9550,
their doing the whole spin out of control thing. I have not verified this
though, too busy with work stuff to reboot and start over.. yet. But I
wanted to toss this out there in the off chance another XPS user has
noticed something afoot with their fans.
I'll bounce into an older kernel tonight and report back.
Thankes!

Thoughts/Opinions on Setting up a Fed/Centos7 box for an app!
by bruce
Hey guys.
I've got a Fed/Centox 7 box (should/hopefully be the same process) to
setup for an open source "slack" app called "Rocket.chat" as well as
"Mattermost". I've looked around a bit and kind of need skills of
someone with much more sys admin cred!
As an example, Mattermost, requires mysql/postgres, "go", DNS, nginx,
certificates, etc..
I'm considering a couple of tmp digitalocean/linode instances to play with this.
The install docs are listed at:
https://docs.mattermost.com/install/install-rhel-71.html
Anyone with a bit of time to be a mentor on this, let me know. I'll
even shell ou some $$ to you for this one!
Thoughts/comments...
Thanks guys!

Setting umask in Fedora 26
by Peter Gueckel
In ~/.bash_profile, I have umask=002, since I want directories
(files) to have the permission 755 (644).
Until Fedora 25, this worked perfectly.
Now, in Fedora 26, directories (files) are created with the
permission 775 (664).
When I run umask, it returns 0002.
For some reason, my setting in .bash_profile is no longer being
honoured in Fedora 26! Why?

OT: help understand this reply from gmail
by JD
I sent a message to a company in India called Delhi Photo,
whose email address I gleaned from
http://www.photocopier-suppliers.com/delhi-photo-company-janpath-new-delh...
So, I emailed them at dpco(a)bol.net.in
but, gmail replied with a "problem" I had not seen before (Directory
Harvest Attack).
What I do not understand from the message:
Is Gmail being accused by the targetserver of the email address as a DHA
source
or is gmail detecting that the server of the target email is a DHA source?
