[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Apache and umask for document root

Hi, I've set up a virtual host for a joomla website and having some permissions problems. I've seen numerous configurations online about how to set umask for the apache user, but none have worked, including creating a systemd file (/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/httpd.service) with the following: [Unit] Description=The Apache HTTP Server After=network.target remote-fs.target nss-lookup.target [Service] Type=notify Environment=LANG=C Umask=0006 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecReload=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k graceful # Send SIGWINCH for graceful stop KillSignal=SIGWINCH KillMode=mixed PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target The problem is that the files are owned by the joomla user, but also need to have access (both read and write) to be able to modify some files within the document root. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set umask for the apache user? I'm also interested in recommended permissions settings for the joomla document root. Thanks, Alex

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? Install on Zotac Zbox CI327?

Hello there, (after a looong time not using Fedora, just back to it!) I've tried installing Fedora on a Zotac Zbox CI327 (Intel Celeron N3450 inside) but this happens to fail. I've tried F25 but it has not the right kernel to make it (I've read about 4.10 minimum), then tried F26-Alpha-1.7 Live and Rawhide-20170518 Live but none could reach the graphical login. They both boot, some steps take a lot of time and I end up in a state I don't understand but which is not friendly ;-). suspends shutdowns system instead of suspending

Hi, A new bug has cropped up on my system Dell Precision 5510 running Fedora 25 Plasma Desktop. Anytime I suspend my device it shutdowns and obviously I lose all my unsaved work. I have tried all the kernel currently installed on my system 4.10.10-200.fc25.x86_64, 4.10.9, and 4.10.8. I have also tried downgrading systemd to systemd-231-10.fc25.x86_64. how to correctly log without journald (and its blobs)?

In previous Fedora distros was (IMHO) right way to log only to syslog, without journald and its (for me) unwanted annoying binary logs, by using configuration as: *) Set systemd log target to syslog: systemd.log_target=syslog (syslog-or-kmsg) ---- on kernel cmdline systemd.default_standard_output=syslog --/ and LogTarget=syslog ---- in systemd.conf DefaultStandardOutput=syslog --/ *) configuring rsyslog to listen on /dev/log unix socket: $SystemLogSocketName /dev/log ------ in rsyslog.conf $ModLoad imuxsock ----/ $OmitLocalLogging off ---/ $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/syslog --/(legacy directives) $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/socket -/ $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/stdout / (not sure when all last three directives needed) *) prevent to run journald: systemctl mask systemd-journald.service (and maybe mask systemd-journal-flush.service) And it works fine. But in actual Fedora 24 in systemd man page values syslog-or-kmsg and syslog are missing in LogTarget option. As systemd/journald man pages say hardly anything about exact mean of appropriate configuration for this purpose, then please when someone more knowledgeable can advise: - where to direct the systemd output? Maybe to kmsg an then read it in rsyslog via imklog? (rsyslog should have also imkmsg module, but is not in rsyslog-8.12.0-3.fc24) - what about /run/log/journal/.../system.journal ? On my test F24 system it have open rsyslogd, abrt-dump-journal-oops and abrt-dump-journal-xorg (no need for these last two) processes. Uses it also something else? - what about /run/systemd/journal/{dev-log,socket,stdout} unix sockets? Should rsyslogd listen on them? - /dev/log seems be now symlink to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log socket (as defined by systemd-journald-dev-log.socket) Should it be left (because now something sends to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log), or can be /run/systemd/journal/dev-log removed? how to (re-?)construct grub menu?

Good afternoon, I found out the rather hard way what caused those boot failure problems that were the subject of a threat starting last month. After my weekly "dnf upgrade" last Thursday, I checked my root e-mail, and found the hard drive had 8 bad sectors, then 16 bad sectors. A smartctl short test showed several parameters "pre-fail", and the others "old-age". I obtained a new drive. My Cray Research friend gave me a USB stick with "Clonezilla-Live-Version" on it. That duplicated the old hard drive onto the new one, but apparently not 100%. After the old drive was removed and the new drive installed, I could not boot. The system was being put into a grub shell(?). (It displayed the "grub> " prompt.) After beating out heads against the wall (or the phone), my Cray research friend gave me another USB stick with "Boot-Repair-Disk" on it. That rebuilt a grub file, but not correctly. But at least I got a grub menu when booting, and I was able to edit the shell that the grub menu entry would run. I had to take the "efi" off the commands "linuxefi" and "initrdefi". That allows me to boot up Fedora. But the menu is missing an entry for windows, and I still have to edit that script every time. I want the grub menu to offer the three most recent patches of Fedora, the most recent Fedora rescue shell, and windows-7, in that order. (This is a dual-boot system.) And I want the shells launched by the menu entries to be correct. How do I get that accomplished - the correct Fedora-25 way? If it matters, the motherboard uses UEFI bios. Thank-you in advance. Running local SSH as background process - possible??

Ok guys, I know this isn't strictly "Fed" related, but the group might have suggestions. My use case, the process has a number of remote servers. I'd like to be able to run a bunch of commands on the remote servers as fast as posible. The initial thought was to loop through the different IPAddresses, and SSH into each server, to run the commands. However, this process was still "sequential" in that each SSH session needs to complete, prior to running the next server/ssh command. So, my question/need -- is to figure out how to run a ssh as a background on the local server. This approach would/should allow the process to quickly fire off commands to the remote ipaddresses/servers in a much faster/parallel manner. sortof: foreach iplist as ipaddress ssh user1@ipaddress command & (assuming that the '&' runs the local ssh in the background -- it doesn't!) Running "stuff" on the remote can occur in a "Screen" session, which would allow the ssh process to fire off the remote cmd, but it still doesn't run the local ssh as a "background" process.. Rick has mentioned/discussed the "Screen" function in past threads. Thoughts/comments....

Openvpn start fails on reboot

If I reboot my F24 system, openvpn server fails to properly start but a subsequent manual systemctl start openvpn@server does succeed. I have enabled html5, and yet youtube claims Browser does not currently recognize any of video formats available Click here to visit our frequently asked questions about HTML5 video. When I do click on "Click here ....etc" I get the same page tat I access directly with the URL https://www.youtube.com/html5 and it shows The HTML5 player is currently used when possible. For a sample live video, I clicked on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtU_mdL2vBM just in case you wanted to know what I clicked on. Thanx!!

Pulseaudio: Hardware Routing

Hello, for reasons I have to send the input from an audio interface to an other. I can do this with pactl load-module module-loopback \ source="alsa_input.usb-Burr-Brown_from_TI_USB_Audio_CODEC-00.analog-stereo" \ sink="alsa_output.usb-M-AUDIO_M-Track_Hub-00.analog-stereo" and this works as desired. Currently I have to issue this command (realized as procedure) after each login. I want a permanent solution. Where to place this command? Or is there an other permant solution beside this command? BTW, rc.local doesnt't work. Any pointer welcome. Kind regards, Frank

Fedora on a NUC?

Everyone: Does anyone have experience with installing Fedora on a NUC? In case anyone here doesn't know what a NUC is: it happens to stand for Next Unit of Computing. It is a 5.4 x 4.9 x 4.5-/inch/ box having the minimal number of components to support desktop functions. You equip it with your own hard drive, keyboard, mouse, etc., and can drive up to a 4K Ultra-style monitor. Some people use its VESA mount to mount it on the back of their TV. Result: instant smart TV--smarter than any TV in the store, because it can handle word processing and regular Web apps in addition to video and audio streaming. Word is that it normally ships with Windows 10, but can support any number of distributions of Linux. I want to know whether Fedora is one of them. It sounds like the ideal small office/media lab/home theater solution. Pair it with a good NAS and you have all the computing power you need, with a fraction of the physical--and carbon--footprint. Comments? Suggestions? Success stories? Horror stories? Temlakos

DWA-192 Driver no Longer Compiles After Maintenance Update in F25

Hi, I am using a DWA-192 usb WiFi adapter in F25 hence I need to get a driver from github to be compiled on my system so that I can use the adapter. This driver compiled and worked quite happily with kernel 4.9.9, not that the kernel version is necessarily an indicator of compile success. It had been a month or more since I had apply any system updates, so I did so two days ago, which as part of the update updated the kernel to 4.11.5, and when dkms went to compile the driver for the new kernel the compile failed with error messages about implicit function definitions and messages about warnings having been converted to errors. I tried doing a search on the net for a DWA-192 driver and got a link to github to a driver version that seemed to be the same version as the driver I already had, but I downloaded it anyway and did a manual compile of that but it failed to compile with the same errors. Does anyone know if there is an updated driver that will compile with the current level of F25 or whether it has yet to be updated for compatibility with F25 and hence I will need to continue to use Ethernet internet access? regards, Steve

I'm using Fedora 25 on an HP laptop with KDE. I commonly use a VPN service, but it leaks ipv6 addresses. This seems to be a common problem with VPN and ipv6, from what I've read on the internet. So, I've turned off ipv6 for my wireless interface, and that seems to solve the problem. However, I just can't help but think that this will eventually cause a problem somewhere. Is there a better solution for ipv6 leakage with a vpn on Fedora 25 other than just turning it off? Thanks, billo

Good afternoon, (f25 home workstation) While looking at journalctl output yesterday and today for other reasons (separate thread), I saw many "authentication failure" messages, over half also saying "user=root". I also saw many "password check failed for user (root)" messages. I saw many unknown user login attempts, and a few invalid user login attempts, and some attempts using one of the valid regular user names. Why? I am not yet good at reading journalctl output, so I don't know if these connection attempts are coming from "outside" or within this system. I don't know if I should be concerned or not. I do not intend anyone or anything to be able to get in to this system except for things that I initiate (examples: Firefox activity, Thunderbird activity, "dnf upgrade", installs, etc.). And it doesn't make sense to me that any of those would be trying to log in to this system to do what I want. I also don't see why anything on this system would try to log in to this same system except me personally (su, sudo, and actual logins). I am the only actual user. What's going on? How do I determine where they're coming from? Is there really someone or something trying to hack in? If no, what really is going on? Most important, How do I prevent connections from outside? thanks, Bill.

Screensaver Anomaly in F25

I did an upgrade from F24 to F25. Everything seems to be working fine. I use xscreensaver instead of gnome-screensaver with a Gnome desktop. I have noticed that the timer for the screensaver is not being reset when I type or use the mouse. I can be using the machine and the screensaver will activate and then deactivate (since I'm typing or using the mouse). Has anyone else noticed this kind of behavior? Is this something with xscreensaver or is the timer reset somewhere else? Craig

OutlawCountry 29 June, 2017 Today, June 29th 2017, WikiLeaks publishes documents from the OutlawCountry project of the CIA that targets computers running the Linux operating system. OutlawCountry allows for the redirection of all outbound network traffic on the target computer to CIA controlled machines for ex- and infiltration purposes. The malware consists of a kernel module that creates a hidden netfilter table on a Linux target; with knowledge of the table name, an operator can create rules that take precedence over existing netfilter/iptables rules and are concealed from an user or even system administrator. The installation and persistence method of the malware is not described in detail in the document; an operator will have to rely on the available CIA exploits and backdoors to inject the kernel module into a target operating system. OutlawCountry v1.0 contains one kernel module for 64-bit CentOS/RHEL 6.x; this module will only work with default kernels. Also, OutlawCountry v1.0 only supports adding covert DNAT rules to the PREROUTING chain. My first take is that this doesn't represent a very serious threat. Do you disagree?

Writing a systemd service file

Hi, I'm trying to write a service file for a daemon and having some problems. I believe the issue is with the ability to give the process write and read access to parts of the filesystem which appear to somehow be restricted. The daemon is the Avira virus scanner, which runs under amavisd-new. The daemon's home directory is /usr/local/savapi-sdk-linux_glibc24_x86_64, and it needs write access in the modules directory. The daemon can run as root or as the amavis user. It drops its privileges to the amavis user after starting anyway. Keyboard problems.

Hi, I'm running Fedora 27 x86_64 (rawhide) and have noticed a problem in text windows with Firefox. The problem exists in both the FF released version AND the FF beta version. It could be Firefox. The problem exists with KDE and WindowMaker as the desktop manager. What I'm seeing: I have the caps lock key mapped to the ctrl key so when I type ALL caps I have to hold down the shift key. When I try to insert a space between words I have to release the shift key, otherwise the space is ignored. This used to work but since I reinstalled this system the keyboard is acting strangely. This behavior plus certain other letters seem to want to generate a cedilla or an accent grave or accent acute or an umlaut. There are a few other characters that behave similarly. Coincidentally I started getting messages about python forcing "PYTHONCOERCECLOCALE=0". Maybe this is not related to this problem, I can't tell. Could this be a LOCALE issue? I can't tell if this is a bug or just a UFU (User Foul Up). Any thoughts/hints/tips/suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Thanks, George...

Thunderbird Issues

Hi All; I'm running Fedora 25, the latest update also updated Thunderbird to version 52.2.0 Since then I am seeing lots of weird/broken behavior, I have multiple accounts and sometimes when I open thunderbird I see the folders in an account and other times I see the account name ad no folders (not even the INBOX). I seem to be unable to use many folders offline even with the flag checked for offline use. Anyone know of any work arounds? Maye I should downgrade thunderbird? Can someone point me towards how to downgrade a single package? Thanks in advance

I have migrate my home server from Fedora 11 to Fedora 25 with a new installation. All work fine except the load firmware of the cxacru module (ADSL Modem USB) at boot time, after a poweroff and unplug/plug the AC power cable. If I try reload the modules manually when the server is started I get the same error and the firmware is not loaded. If I disconnect and reconnect modem USB when the server is on, the cxacru module load its firmware without problem and I can load the ppp interface property . And even then I still don't know how to do a number of system things that I used to be able to do as late as Windows 7. I told myself I really ought to get a book on Windows 10 administration and get on the ball, but my eyes just glazed over. I thought systemd was adding too much complexity and too many layers of BS. It's got nothing on Microsoft. Windows 10 seems pretty opaque to me. But there it is, sitting in a window. Thanks for the link. billo

There's a bug in TB 52.2.0 that causes TB to lose track of imap accounts and download stuff again and again, when it's not crashting. "Problems with Gmail (folders not showing, repeated email download, etc.) introduced in version 52.2.0." This is supposed to be fixed in 52.2.1. Hi, Somebody helps? Old "Fedora 20-x86_64" installed and working(printer&scanner) with my Brother MFC-9320CW. Due to a hardware problem, I had to change my motherboard. All worked fine, until I decided to update the system. After I installed Fedora-Kde-live-25-1-3, I lost access to the scanner of the MFC-9320CW, and now I have 2 problems: 1) Don't have scangui anymore, skanlite seems that does't work with wi-fi devices. Printing is working ok. 2) When I shutdown the system, dolphin ends with a segmentation fault(11). Need help, please. Thanks.

This is just a note for all the Thunderbird users that have been finding the reply button has stopped working properly and has been sending replies back to the sender instead of the list. According to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/52.0/releasenotes/ : "When replying to a mailing list, reply will be sent to address in From header ignoring Reply-to header" There is a reply to list button at the top and for the shortcut users, it's CTRL-SHIFT-L.

Hi all, normally, I'm using a gnome (wayland) desktop sessions. If I started (only once) the gnome classic session, then logging out and thenre-logging in again with the usage of gnome (wayland), I still get a gnome classic session. Only after restarting my box, I can again run gnome (wayland) sessions. My login manager is gdm. Anybody sees this too? [F25] only black screen with KDE Plasma session

Hi, Since this morning, after loging in on a Plasma KDE session, I can first see the desktop then only a black screen with only the mouse available, nothing else. Ctrl+Alt+Suppr, brings the log out screen so I can log out. I can also switch to a text terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F2. That's all. Before turning the computer off yesterday, I updated my packages (see below the details of the transaction). How can I get back my normal screen so that I can work again? Hello, I have been facing an issue with lightdm-gtk since I installed Fedora 25 (mate desktop) in my system. When I boot system and try login for the first time, lightdm-gtk segfaults and screen goes blacks for a second or so. Then lightdm-gtk re-appears asking for login credentials again. The second time I enter credentials, login is successful. dmesg - lightdm-gtk-gre[1143]: segfault at 10 ip 00007fa3023fbf70 sp 00007ffcf876f828 error 4 in libcairo.so.2.11400.8[7fa30238e000+122000] I filed a bug for same. Libvirtd Issues, QEMU/KVM Connecting..... Never does

Fedora 25 dnf poops on glibc

On 2017-06-20 I did a 'dnf update' on my server. The update threw some errors and when I did a 'reboot' with the new kernel (vmlinuz-4.11.5-200.fc25.x86_64) it failed without giving me a command prompt. So, I booted my previous kernel (4.10.17-200.fc25.x86_64). I got a login prompt and logged in. Most commands crashed and sent be back to the login prompt. You'll need to know which partition is your / I don't have a /boot partition so there was no need to mount that. I broke the raid mirror so that if this didn't work, I would have a known place to go back to and try something else. All is well now. I'm just putting this out there in hope that it will help someone. Bill PS. Note that the newest kernel (vmlinuz-4.11.5-200.fc25.x86_64) still does not boot to a login or command prompt.

Hey... Curious as to how to get the following to work remotely over SSH. The cmd is used to remove redundant lines, while maintaining order in the output file. I haven't seen anyone else post about this, so this message is forwarded from the kernel list, about a new kernel vulnerability. The vulnerability is severe as it leads to root authority, but so far only local logins have been demonstrated to have the ability to exploit it. So, for most Fedora users, it means they aren't at risk. I'm running the kernel with the fix, and it is working fine so far. The link explains the risk, it has to do with the interaction between user stacks and kernel stacks, and one gaining access to the other with bad things happening thereafter. Is default umask of 022 still reasonable for Fedora?

I recently became aware that the default umask for Fedora is 022 when it caused problems for me that I had a different umask. This seems like an anachronism, a relic of a kinder, gentler time, when the computing atmosphere was more collegiate. Is it really appropriate that new files be created for a user with permissions of rwxr-xr-x in today's security atmosphere? I set my umask to 077, so that no one can access anything. I'm interested in other people's opinions, especially those arguing in favor of continuing to have a umask of 022. Am I overlooking something?

Video editing disaster

I am trying out multiple video editors on Fedora, with very poor results and a ton of crashes. Anyone have recommendations on how to stablize one of these or can you recommend a video editor that just works (like kdenlive used to when I used it last a year ago)? I am having the same results on two Fedora 25, 64-bit systems, fully updated. The packages are from rpmfusion and on one of the two systems from unitedrpms. My main system is an older 6-core AMD with 8G of RAM so it should handle it. The files I am testing with are: JPG images from a DSLR Quicktime from my DSLR (MVI_xxx.MOV), Movie from my Android phone xxxxxxxxx.m2ts Movie from a DVD xxx.mpg Movie from a digital camcorder (Sony AVCHD): xxxx.MTS KDENLIVE: My goto editor was Kdenlive, but it won't open files. I keep getting "clip is invalid". The terminal outputs: mlt_repository_init: failed to dlopen /usr/lib64/mlt/libmltavformat.so (/lib64/libavdevice.so.57: symbol av_buffersink_get_sample_aspect_ratio, version LIBAVFILTER_6 not defined in file libavfilter.so.6 with link time reference) I think there is a lib miss-match. PITIVI: Pitivi is nice, but I can't keep it running. Multiple core dumps. OPENSHOT: I really love OpenShot. I tried the one from rpmfusion and it crashed all the time, for example when trying transitions. I also tried the latest version via AppImage: OpenShot-v2.3.3-x86_64.AppImage This seemed much more stable, but I could still crash it with transitions, adding an MP3 file for audio, etc. Anyone have a good, stable video editor or have suggestions on how to run one of these in a stable platform? Strange mouse issue in VirtualBox

Hi I occasionally have this strange mouse issue in VirtualBox. Running an update version of Fedora 25 with GNOME and wayland. (64 bit) Most recent VirtualBox 5.1.22 Guest Windows 10 with Guest Additions Installed. Sometimes the mouse partially stops working and the only way to reset it I've found is to power off the guest. When I say partially I mean 1) mouse pointer still moves 3) it can be used to trigger the GNOME task switcher (top left corner) 4) no other control responds to clicks As soon as the Guest stops, everything starts working again. Keyboard still works and this is what I use to gracefully shut down the guest. Somehow the mouse click event is trapped by Virtual Box and cannot be used. I know it makes little sense, but this is my best description at the moment. Andrea

Virtual keyboard problems.

Hi, I just installed a ton of packages to this system and all of a sudden I have this virtual keyboard. Yes, you guessed it, I don't know which package brought me this head ache. This system is a Fedora 27 x86_64 (rawhide). I'm using KDE. The monitor is a Samsung 27" TV and has NO touch screen capability that I'm aware of. I am using ONLY the TV as a monitor... the one on the laptop is disabled as far as KDE is concerned. Any/all help hints/tips would be GREATLY appreciated. My UNENDING Thanks, George...

F25 LibreOffice hung

I had an Office Base database open for a few days (and a couple system suspends), along with lots of spreadsheets and docs. Went to close Base and save the database and now none of the LibreOffice docs are responding. I thought I found the soffice.bin running and killed it, but it still seems to be running and I can't see if there is any other related process. How can I find the process and kill it? I really don't want to boot... thanks

printing envelopes?

I was trying to use LibreOffice to print an envelope last night. The Insert>Envelope... dialog worked fine, but it will only produce a profile print. My printer wants the envelope inserted longways. My work-around seems to be to export a PDF, then use evince to print the PDF, which will indeed allow me to change the orientation when printing. Is that really the only (relatively simple) way to print envelopes? (It might actually be simpler to use texlive and command line tools).

terminal hangs looking for missing commands

On a newish computer with F25, I see this at the command line when I type in a command that's not installed: [matt@envious ~]$ pv bash: pv: command not found... and then it just sits there until I ctrl-c or similar. I assume what's happening is it's trying to check for what package provides that command, but failing. Has anyone else seen this? What can I do about it? Apologies if this is a common error--it's resistant at least to the search terms I can think of. Thanks, Matt

This system is a Fedora 27 x86_64 (rawhide). I'm using KDE. The monitor is a Samsung 27" TV and has NO touch screen capability that I'm aware of. AMD Ryzen 7 freeze on YouTube

Hey, I encountered weird Ryzen 7 freeze when playing youtube video, it kinda stuck in a few seconds loop, the computer was unusable and had to hard reset. While I will be trying to pull out something useful from logs next time (I don't have persistent journal set), anyone experienced the same? This is up-to-date Fedora 25, I was using Google Chrome stable. Is this something to do with Ryzen bug FMA3? How do I check? I do have latest BIOS update, but unsure how to check this bug. Is there a test? I also have older GeForce card, using open source drivers. Thanks for any hints which direction I should dig. Thanks.

post-mortem: f24 boot fails; need help.

Good morning, The "f24 boot fails; need help" problem set me back a week. I'm still catching up. I seriously believe it would be foolish for me to just forget it. I should for the benefit of others try to get at the real cause and possible prevention. A few hours before the failure, I received and looked at an e-mail that I'm almost certain was at least a spoof, and possibly malicious. I know it contained html and links. I did *** not *** click any of the links. I looked at it, and deleted it. It was viewed in Thunderbird only. The message's "From" ended with "yahoo.com". My question: It is highly improbable that that message had anything to do with the boot failure. Am I correct? Also a few hours before the failure, I did some web browsing using Firefox with NoScript and uBlock Origin. As best as I recall, the "riskiest" sites that I visited were finance.yahoo.com (and a few of its sub-pages, I clicked no ads, no ad links) and indeed.com (possibly and a posting or two). My question: It is highly improbable that my web browsing had anything to do with the boot failure. Am I correct? thanks, Bill.

Control audio output between Line Out and Headphones

Hi, I'm struggling to configure the audio output of my Fedora 25 installation. I'd like to find a way to easily switch between front audio (headphones) and line out in Gnome Shell without physically plugging/unplugging any jacks. So to clarify my setup is as followed (on ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS Mainboard with Realtek ALC887 Audio Codec): * Headphones connected to the front headphone jack of my case via internal mainboard header * Amplifier connected to green jack on the mainboards backpanel When both, amp and headphones, are connected, the sound is only played via headphones. In the Gnome audio settings the the line out output device disappears and there is only the headphones output device. Then I used alsamixer so change "Auto-Mute Mode" from [Enabled] to [Disabled]. This way sound is played via amp and headphones simultaneously. Gnome audio settings still shows only the headphones as output device. I can than change Volume of "Headphones" and "Front" via alsamixer separately to get any mute/unmute combination I want but obviously this is neither comfortable nor compatible with any gnome extensions that would let me change output easily (like https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/906/sound-output-device-chooser/) I generated more Information with the alsa-info.sh script which can be found here: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=9c9fd41a57760353f5989f85ae5b8e9185d1c2f6 Any Ideas? Fedora Kernel 4.11.x problem

I tried to upgrade my F25 to kernel-4.11.x and I can't boot with it. I have two independent F25 installs, one on ssd and one on sda - boot switched from bios menu. Both failed to boot 4.11.x Immediately after selecting 4.11.x my system freezes without any message (tried without rhgb, etc. with no luck) The older 4.10.17 and 4.9.14 are ok. So not a grub problem. My box: Asrock Z77 Pro4 (legacy bios setting) I3-2120 16GB RAM Radeon 7700 Intel 535 ssd Seagate and WD disks C.S.

Hello, as this is the first time I'm using Fedora, I noticed the following ... (a) when open a SSH connection, it tells e.g. Last login: Mon Jun 5 20:14:37 2017 from 192.168.1.1 all other Linux VMs and/or the Router box show there Last login: Sat Jun 3 21:41:45 2017 from winpc.local (b) when configuring Firefox using a proxy, this works only when entering a IP address; when entering a DNS name a 'Proxy server not found' error is the result ... (c) when configuring a line printer I had to enter e.g. this lpd://192.168.1.11/CP1515N when entering a DNS name e.g. printer.local then this result in a 'printer.local' could not be found; a nslookup shows the correct IP addresses this means the DNS server is working properly ... Update to libdb-5.3.28-21.fc25 in F25 will break the rpm database. Repairable by rebuilding rpm database with rpm --rebuilddb

There is an update (or test update) of libdb for F25 that, when installed, breaks the rpm database because it is incompatible. The dnf update completes, and then hangs (at least it did on my system). The fix is to remove the old rpm databases (this might be optional), and rebuild the rpm databases. rm /var/lib/rpm/__db.00? # optional? rpm --rebuilddb I did a reboot to sync everything that uses libdb (anything that uses the Berkeley db). It might be possible just to restart affected applications if that isn't an option. That worked for my mail client before I rebooted.

postgresql and firewald startup

Hello, I have a server running F25 with postgresql and firewald configured. On startup postgreslq always fail to start complaining about port 5432. I did allow this port on the firewall, if I start manually postgresql after it works. So I did plot the startup sequence (systemd-analyse plot), I saw that pgsql start after dbus.service but much before the firewall. On a machine which has installed gammu-libs dialog gammu python-gammu wammu wammu configure (using automatic detection) is unable to find a connected phone, even though, when I plug in the usb cable, I get a popup on the screen of the gnome directory browser of the phone's storage. So, how do I proceed from here? Thax to all wammu users for any help with this.

Evening all, I thought it would be a Good Idea to "improve" my Fedora system if I added an SDD. I put it in, plugged it in & it seemed to work - sort of.... What I now have is a selection window from grub which has 2 new versions of F25 Workstation (on sda), then an F19, also on sda, followed by the F25 on sdb (my SDD). What I would like to do is to remove the 2 new F25s because the one was only stated to allow me to boot the system; remove the F19 & put F25 on sdb as the default. I hope that doing something like this would mean that (system) updates would be applied to the SDD F25, and that I would be able to access all the software I have on /home...... Does anyone have any ideas how I might be able to do this??? Would I need to change any of my SATA cables to make sdb into sda??? Many thanks for any suggestions!!!!! Dave

2 mice: left & right handed

Hi, running F25 GNOME on Wayland and have 2 mice. One on the left and one on the right of the keyboard. I would like to set the left as left handed and the right as right handed. In GNOME settings I cannot change it per mouse, rather for all of the at the same time. I read that this is a libinput matter, but I cannot find how to do it. Any suggestions? Andrea

Hi, we have fedora25 set up with apache and dovecot and have been using squirrelmail. We're looking to replace squirrelmail with something more modern and "responsive" on mobile. Before I start installing and testing roundcube, rainloop, and the others, I thought I would ask this list if they have a preference for users on mobile? I've searched for an updated review of all the main players these days, but the most recent appears to be from 2015. Thanks, Alex

VPN l2tp+ipsec: not work with last kernel 4.11.3-200

Yesterday I have update my fedora 25 and after reboot VPN l2tp+ipsec do not work anymore. The connection happens without problem, the routing are set correctly, the DNS (UDP protocol) and ping (ICMP protocol) to remote host work. Only the access to some server, like ssh or smb:// (TCP protocol) do not work, in this case, if I monitoring on remote server with tcpdump, none arrives. I'm running a custom manual setup created using dnf. Further context: * The installation procedure is outlined in this tread -- and quite likely irrelevant to this question anyway: https://lists.fedorahosted.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org/… * The disk layout is described in this comment: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1297188#c2 Unlike Fedora 23 and 24, both of which booted just fine, Fedora 26 has two glitches related to my encrypted LUKS root partition: 1. Dracut fails to automatically add the crypt module. It doesn't seem to care about LUKS-related settings in /etc/default/grub and/or about the fact that the system runs off an encrypted volume. I had to manually add add_dracutmodules+="crypt" into /etc/dracut.conf, or else I wouldn't get a password prompt on boot and the early systemd would freeze waiting for the root partition to appear. It works normally with add_dracutmodules+="crypt". 2. Possibly as a consequence of (1), systemd doesn't realize that the root partition has been already activated and luksOpen'ed at boot time and keeps trying to unlock it over and over. The consoles are spammed by messages like this one, basically on every sudo invocation: Password entry required for 'Please enter passphrase for disk cryptprdell-luks (plainprdell)!' (PID 5492). Please enter password with the systemd-tty-ask-password-agent tool! Of course I tried to run the systemd-tty-ask-password-agent tool and type in the password. But then systemctl --failed showed a failure in systemd-cryptsetup(a)plainprdell.service, the auto-generated unit for the LUKS volume. Presumably, journalctl revealed that the error message had been "Failed to activate: Device or resource busy". Well, that's indeed what happens when you try to open a LUKS volume that's already opened. If I don't use systemd-tty-ask-password-agent at all, systemctl status permanently shows "starting" and never reaches "running", because of the LUKS volume it thinks it needs to activate. (I tried systemctl disable, but nope, that had no effect.) This appears to have something in common with an ancient bug from 2013: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=924581 Has anything changed (1) in the way Dracut finds out whether the crypt module is needed (which worked at least up to Fedora 24) or (2) in the way systemd generates its automatic units for encrypted volumes? Something must have changed, but I have no idea what it is and how to get the old behavior back. :-/ My /etc/default/grub and /etc/crypttab are attached. The current kernel version is 4.11.0-2.fc26.x86_64. nfs problem

It is updated regularly. The server is f19, so no updates there. A problem started in the last few weeks. When I examine a file on the server it looks OK. The file is updated every minute (collecting some stats) and 'tail' shows the added lines as they arrive. Examining the same file from the workstation is initially OK, but then, as the file grows, I get binary zeroes at the end of the file. The same with tail, less, vi, etc. The amount of zeroes seems to be the size of the extra data appended to the file. 'ls' shows the actual (full) size of the file. It looks like the utilities see the correct size but bad data is delivered at the tail. After a few minutes the full data is showing but then, as the file grows, again I get zeroes for a few minutes. repomd.xml cannot verified at repo openh264/F26

Hi,all. I meet this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1445817 When I run dnf upgrade, it faild: Cannot download 'https://codecs.fedoraproject.org/openh264/26/x86_64/': repomd.xml GPG signature verification error: Bad GPG signature.
